Bourrit, Marc Theodore A relation of a journey to the glaciers
Bourrit, Marc Théodore. A relation of a journey to the glaciers, in the dutchy of Savoy: translated from the French . . . by Cha. and Fred. Davy. London: printed for G. Robinson, 1776. (50), xxi(1), 256 pp. + an engraved dedication leaf and three plates. 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (very slight wear to top of spine). Second edition in English, preceded by a Norwich printing of 1775; the French text had appeared in Geneva in 1773. The author was a traveller, painter, writer, precentor of the church in Geneva, and enthusiast of the Alps. Bourrit made an attempt to climb Mont Blanc, but failed; the first successful ascent was made in 1786. This English version of his principle Alpine narrative has a remarkable 20-page list of subscribers (including those who subscribed to the Norwich printing). Among the 612 names is that of "Doctor Samuel Johnson, London;" nor is Johnson here in isolation, as the list includes such contemporaries as William Beckford, Edmund Burke, Charles Burney, "Miss" Burney, David Garrick, Catharine Macaulay, Joshua Reynolds, Horace Walpole, etc. Exactly why this unusual book should have attracted such a cluster of prominent names is not clear; neither the author nor the translators have any obvious connection to the Johnson circle. Among the preliminaries is a "table of the plates, design'd to follow this relation," which lists 21 subjects, but most of these were never executed; there are, in fact, three engraved plates (so numbered), along with an engraved leaf of dedication. A fine copy of a scarce book. Eddy and Fleeman 8b; Neete, Mountaineering and Its Literature, 101.

Defoe, Daniel Reformation of manners, a satyr
[Defoe, Daniel.] Reformation of manners, a satyr. N.p. (London?): printed in the year 1702. 32 pp. Sm. 4to, full polished calf, gilt, spine and inner dentelles gilt, contrasting red and black morocco labels, a.e.g., by Riviere & Son. A very rare piracy; first printed earlier the same year in a rather more elegant small quarto of 64 pp. The ESTC (02/06) lists six copies (L [2], LAM, NOu; DFo, WU), to which Foxon adds one other (ICU). A spirited poem, published just after the accession of Queen Anne. Defoe's satire is aimed at many of the prominent Tories, including such writers as Matthew Prior: "And with the nauseous rabble that retire,/ Turn out that bawdy, saucy, poet P-----./ A vintner's boy the wretch was first preferr'd, / To wait at vice's gates, and pimp for bread, / To hold the candle, and sometimes the door, / Let in the drunkard, and let out the whore: / But as to villains it has often chanc'd, / Was for his wit and wickedness advanc'd." Slight dust-soiling, but generally a very good copy. Moore 43; Foxon D147; CBEL II, 885.

Defoe, Daniel, attributed author A letter from a member of the House of Commons . . . relating to the Bill of Commerce
[Defoe, Daniel, attributed author.] A letter from a member of the House of Commons to his friend in the country, relating to the Bill of Commerce. With true copy of the bill, and an exact list of all those who voted for and against engrossing it. London: printed, and sold by J. Baker, 1713. (2), 46 pp. 8vo, full polished calf, gilt, spine and inner dentelles gilt, contrasting red and black morocco labels, by Riviere & Son. First edition. The edition with press figures on pp. 15 and 23; the edition without press figures is almost certainly a reprint, possibly a piracy. In 1713 the Tory ministry made a treaty of commerce with France which was, according to McCulloch, both "liberal" and "judicious," and would have resulted in greatly increased trade and prosperity. Because of a reactionary panic among the merchants, however, the Bill was thrown out in the House of Commons by a majority of 194 to 185. Defoe was one of the few to oppose popular feeling and support the measure. Furbank and Owens (Defoe De-Attributions, p. 62) point out that a reply to this tract, possibly by John Oldmixon, says that there are "but two wretches upon earth that could write such a villanous libel," making it plain that Defoe and William Pittis are the "wretches" in question: "Altogether, though one would not rule out Defoe's authorship, the basis for an ascription to him does not seem very solid." A categorical "de-attribution," however, appears equally hazardous. A fine copy. Moore 265; Kress 2833; Hanson 1483; CBEL II, 893 ("probably by Defoe").

This tract strongly opposes the proposed treaty, which makes the persistent attribution to Defoe (i.e. in Kress, etc.) extremely unlikely. Included are remarks on the wine trade, the tobacco trade with Virginia, the sugar trade with the West Indies, and the Newfoundland fisheries; there is also a statistical table which relates in part to the whaling industry. A fine copy, with outer edges uncut. Kress 2838; European Americana 713/62.

Dering, Edward Heneage The ban of Maplethorpe
Dering, Edward Heneage. The ban of Maplethorpe. . . . With a memoir of the author. London and Leamington: Art and Book Company; Benzinger Bros. (New York, Cincinnati, Chicago), 1894. (6), 248; (4), 249-492; 50 pp. + seven photogravure plates, and an errata slip in Vol. II. Two vols., 8vo, original blue cloth (ends of spines just a trifle rubbed). First edition. "A pro-Catholic country house novel . . . finished on the night Dering died . . . privately published with a request that the reader pray for the author's soul." -- Sutherland. In 1859 Dering had married Georgiana, Lady Chatterton, a widow twenty years his senior. Dering dressed in 17th-century costume, and converted to Catholicism; both he and his wife wrote novels, whose oddity attracted the attention of Sadleir. At the end here, separately paginated, is a biographical account. "This and the pictures illustrate the weird ménage described by Sadleir (I, 84-5); but he did not have this book. For sheer gentle English loony eccentricity this ranks high." -- Woolf. A fine copy of a rare title; the NUC lists one copy (IU). Woolf 1786.

Flatman, Thomas On the death of our late sovereign
Flatman, Thomas. On the death of our late sovereign lord King Charles II of blessed memory. A Pindarique ode. London: printed for Benj. Tooke, 1685. 8 pp. Folio, disbound. First edition. "I should certainly admit that the minor Pindaric -- of which I have, for my sins or as part of them, probably read as much as any one living -- is one of the most dismal departments of English verse. But Flatman's is by no means exceptionally bad, and is at its best better than that of Oldham, or of Otway, or of Swift -- men with whom he cannot compare as a man of letters generally." -- George Saintsbury, Minor Poets of the Caroline Period, III, p. 279. Hoyle, Edmond A short treatise on the game of whist
[Hoyle, Edmond.] A short treatise on the game of whist. Containing the laws of the game: and alsosome rules, whereby a beginner may, with due attention to them, attain to the playing it well. Calculations for those who will bet the odds on any point of the score of the game then playing and depending. Cases stated, to shew what may be effected by a very good player in critical parts of the game. References to cases, viz. at the end of the rule you are directed how to find them. Calculations, directing with moral certainty, how to play well any hand or game, by shewing the chances of your partner's having 1, 2, or 3 cards. With variety of cases added in the appendix. Bath printed, and London: reprinted for W. Webster: 1743. 8, (4), 86 pp. 8vo, disbound. The first of many pirated editions; preceded only by a very rare 35-page duodecimo dated 1742 (no prior Bath edition is recorded). Hoyle was a teacher of whist by profession; for many years he circulated his rules for playing in manuscript, and his famous treatise was not published until he was seventy. Later authorized editions bear Hoyle's signature. "Hoyle was the first to write scientifically on whist, or indeed any card game." -- DNB. Two settings of this edition are known; in this one, the fourth line of the drop-head title to Chapter I reads, "The Game of Whist" (as opposed to just "Whist"). Josippon Historiae Judaicae
Josippon. Yosippon [in Hebrew.] Josippon, sive Josephi Ben-Gorionis historiæ Judaicæ libri sex. Oxford: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1706. (6), l, (14), 458, (14) pp. 4to, contemporary mottled calf (slight wear, upper joint cracked). First edition as edited and copiously annotated by the orientalist John Gagnier. A popular chronicle of Jewish history from Adam to the age of Titus, long attributed to an otherwise obscure writer named Josippon, or Joseph ben Gorion (sometimes wrongly identified with Josephus). The text was in fact probably compiled in Hebrew early in the 10th century, by a Jewish native of south Italy. An abbreviated English translation first published in 1558 proved very popular, and was many times reprinted. John Gagnier was born in France, but came to England as a young man and became an Anglican clergyman; he subsequently taught Hebrew at Oxford. The DNB wrongly states that this edition includes the Hebrew text; in fact it is a Latin translation, with personal and place names in the original Hebrew, and an extensive scholarly apparatus. A very good copy, with numerous manuscript annotations by an unidentified early reader (evidently quite learned). Very scarce; the ESTC (1990) lists six copies (L, C, E, O; NBiSU; GOT). Atheism Four titles in one volume
[Atheism.] An unusual volume of four blasphemous early Victorian tracts, as described below. Together four vols. in one, 12mo, contemporary roan, spine gilt (a bit scuffed). Included are the following: (1) Holyoake, George Jacob. Paley refuted in his own words. London: Hetherington, n.d. (1847). 39 pp. First edition. An early publication by a follower of Robert Owen and active participant in the Chartist movement; Holyoake later defined himself as a "secularist," and became an ardent advocate of freedom of the press. He is now perhaps best remembered for his conviction in 1842 on a charge of blasphemy, for which he served a prison term of six months. This tract expresses clearly his rejection of the evidences of Christianity. Printed in Birmingham, and rare; the NUC lists only a single copy of the sixth edition of 1866 (RPB). (2) Curtis, S. E. Theology displayed; being a review of the origin, excellence, and utility of the Christian religion; designed to terminate religious controversies by a short and easy method. London: J. Cleave; Watson; A. Heywood (Manchester); J. Hodson (Leeds); Paton and Love (Glasgow); France and Co. (Newcastle), 1842. 79(1) pp. Second edition; first published in 1833. Apparently the author's only publication. A stridently anti-Christian pamphlet, with harsh words in particular for the Bible. The subtitle of Chapter IX reads in part, "Theology most pernicious in the harmony and welfare of Society -- Mr. Owen's New System, the only remedy for all the moral evils of Society." Printed in Leeds, and rare; the NUC lists one copy (NN), along with one copy of the first edition (NjPT). (3) [Watts, William.] The Yahoo! A satirical rhapsody. London: printed and published by M. Ryall, 1842. xix(1),136 pp. A verse satire on religious cant, with ample footnotes; the spirit of Swift is invoked in both the title and the text. First printed in 1830, and considered sufficiently blasphemous at the time to be issued with a false New York imprint (not a common practice). The present edition appears to have been published in 13 penny parts; the NUC lists three copies (DLC, MdBJ, InU). (4) [Anon.] An apology for atheism: addressed to religious investigators of every denomination, by one of its apostles. London: J. Watson, 1846. 96 pp. First edition. The text includes references to Hume, Spinoza, Robert Dale Owen, Coleridge, Locke, Newton, Godwin, G. H. Lewes, etc., as well as to George Jacob Holyoake (see above). There are a number of comments on Ireland in particular ("religion is the curse of Ireland"). Rare; the NUC lists one copy (NN). An unusual volume, in very good condition.

Cloete, Henry, and James Read Five lectures on the emigration of the Dutch farmers from the colony of the Cape of Good Hope. [With:] The Kat River Settlement in 1851
Cloete, Henry. Five lectures on the emigration of the Dutch farmers from the colony of the Cape ofGood Hope, and their settlement in the district of Natal, until their formal submission to Her Majesty's authority, in the year 1843. Delivered to the Natal Society at Pietermaritzburg. Cape Town: Saul Solomon & Co., Steam Printing Office, 1856. (2)11, 168 pp. [Bound with:] Read, Rev. James, Junior. The Kat River Settlement in 1851: described in a series of letters published in "The South African Commercial Advertiser." Cape Town: A. S. Robertson, 1852. xxii, 130, 4 pp. Two vols. in one, 8vo, contemporary half black calf, spine gilt (some rubbing). First editions. Two rare and very important South African imprints. The first was republished by John Murray in London in 1899 as The History of the Great Boer Trek and the Origin of the South African Republics. Henry Cloete had played a major role in the annexation of Natal by Great Britain in 1843; appointed by Sir George Napier, Lord Stanley, as a special commissioner to explain to the Natal volksraad the British government's position, "he behaved with the utmost tact." -- Encyclopædia Britannica. Of this title the NUC lists one copy (IEN). The second title is a detailed and vivid eye-witness account of events of the opening stages of the Kaffir War of 1850-1853, including the revolt of the Kat River Hottentots in 1851. The author, a local missionary, was very much a participant in the events he describes. The text provides colorful descriptions of others on the scene, such as the exotic "late principal conspirator in the Blinkwater rebellion," Hermanus Matroos: "The subject of our obituary was the son of an absconded slave by a Kafir woman of Eno's tribe. He early left Kafirland, and was brought up by a respectable farmer in the sub-district of Zwager's Hoek, where he learnt to speak the Dutch language with the fluency and accent of a Hottentot, and became expert in wagon-driving, grooming, after-riding, and in all the branches of farmers' service." Present here at the end is a 4-page appendix, clearly separately printed, and perhaps not issued with all copies; according to the preface, these letters, first published in a local newspaper, have here been revised for book publication. The NUC lists two copies of this work (CtY, PPL). In very good condition.

First edition of Zapolya; last early separate editions of the other two titles. The text of Remorse here differs considerably from that of the first edition published earlier the same year. Courtship and marriage: satire An address to the right worshipful the batchelors of Great-Britain
[Courtship and marriage: satire.] An address to the right worshipful the batchelors of Great-Britain. Containing an examination of the several articles of impeachment, lately exhibited against them, by the ladies. Together with some reflections on the modern education of the fair sex. To which is added, pretty miss's catechism. And a poem on the pleasures of a single life; or, the miseries of matrimony. London: printed for A. Antiquity, n.d. (1735). 96 pp. 8vo, disbound. First edition? A rollicking and wide-ranging satire on the battle between the sexes, warning the bachelors of Britain against the foibles and machinations of coquettes, courtesans, virgins, and brides. The catechism of "pretty miss" describes in some detail the pastimes of a fashionable young lady: "Q. But what are those principles, which, if adhered to, will make a lady's life agreeable? A. To pamper herself, her monkey, or lap-dog; to rail at and ridicule her neighbours; to regard no body; but to cozen and defraud the poor, and to quit scores with the rich at the expence of a neglected husband's reputation -- To lie in bed till noon, and to chase away the night at dear quadrille." The meandering text proper, which ends at p. 85, is signed Ralp Nab, Supervisor of His Majesty's Office of Excise in Sh---b---y." The poem at the end appears to be an altered version of one first published in 1701 under the same title, and frequently reprinted; the lines have variously been attributed to Ned Ward and Tom Brown, among others (Foxon P488-504). The bibliography of this amusing tract is opaque, and the present setting appears to be unrecorded. The ESTC (02/06) lists four other printings: (a) A 96-page edition, outwardly similar to this one, but with a separate title-page to "The Pleasures of a Single Life" (L; CLU-S/C, KU-S, MnU, MBAt); in the present printing the text of the poem begins on the verso of L3 (p. 86), and there is thus no space for a divisional title. (b) An 85-page edition, also undated (L only). (c) A second edition of 1737, with 96 pp. (d) A third edition of 1737, with 75 pp. There are no further listings in the NUC. Title a bit dusty, but a very good copy of a most unusual text.

Harris, Thomas, and John Rutherford A narrative of the rise and progress of the disputes subsisting between the patentees of Covent-Garden Theatre.
[Harris, Thomas, and John Rutherford.] A narrative of the rise and progress of the disputes subsisting between the patentees of Covent-Garden Theatre. London: printed for J. Fletcher, 1768. (4), 38 pp. 4to, disbound. First edition. The first in a flurry of about a dozen pamphlets describing a bitter quarrel which erupted during the 1768 season among the four co-proprietors of Covent Garden, with George Colman and William Powell on one side, and Harris and Rutherford on the other. The source of the dispute seems to have been an attempt by Harris to force his mistress, Mrs. Lessingham, into roles for which she was not qualified. But the text here deals with wider issues, and provides interesting information about the day-to-day affairs of the theater. A preliminary "apology" indicates that this pamphlet was rushed into print to anticipate George Colman's True State of the Diferences, which was already being advertised in the newspapers. Title-page rather dust-soiled, small tear in blank margin of last leaf, but a sound copy of a scarce title. Lowe (Arnott and Robinson) 1171.

A very good set, complete with a fine portrait engraved by Anthony Walker after a painting by Mierveld, eight engraved plates, one large folding table, and an errata leaf in each volume. Hume, David Expose succinct
[Hume, David.] Exposé succinct de la contestation qui s'est élevée entre M. Hume. Et M. Rousseau, avec les pieces justificatives. Londres: 1766. xiv, (2), 127 pp. 12mo, original pale blue wrappers (slight wear to spine). First London edition, following shortly after a Paris printing with the same imprint and pagination; the London origin of the present edition is revealed by the presence of press figures. Hume's summation of a tragi-comic episode. The publication of Emile (1762) aroused a great deal of controversy, and Rousseau responded by renouncing his Geneva citizenship, and printing his Lettres de la montagne (1763). Public opinion against him grew at an alarming rate, and he began to think about living elsewhere. Late in 1765, Hume offered him asylum in England, and Rousseau duly arrived in London in January, 1766. Here he was to a large extent lionized by English society, but he was by nature equally indignant of neglect and intolerant of attention, and his state of mind soon deteriorated to the point of madness. The publication of a spiteful letter by Horace Walpole, in the name of the King of Prussia, made Rousseau believe that there was a terrible plot against him, and he ended up by quarreling with Hume himself, who would not acknowledge that all his friends and Rousseau's supposed enemies of the philosophe circle were rascals. The text here consists of correspondence between Hume and Rousseau, with connecting narrative passages and explanatory footnotes by Hume. Hume at first had no thought of publication, but merely sent the manuscript to d'Alembert and other friends in Paris. With Hume's permission, certain changes were made in the text, a preface was added, and the book printed in Paris, in a translation by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Suard. Eventually Hume decided to have his English original published as well, but in the meantime he expressed his willingness to allow the present London reprint of the French version. A few pale waterstains at the beginning, but a fine copy in original wrappers, complete with a blank leaf after the preface which is often missing. Very rare in this condition. Jessop, p. 37; Rothschild 1178; CBEL II, 1874.
