Wetmore, Prosper Montgomery, (1798-1876), [ALS Prosper M. Wetmore, New York [City], July 17, 1839, to the Learned Statesman and Sometime New York Governor William Marcy, (1786-1857)]
1839, Signed by Author Very Good 12 closely written quarto pages, discussing American and English literature and political matters in which Wetmore and Marcy were involved. (written on all sides of three bifolia of slightly tinted wove writing paper watermarked "O & H"; first leaf lightly embossed at top left with rectangular stamp of "Owen & H---, So. Lee, Mass.", each leaf measuring 25.2 x 20.5 cm.) Averaging more than 200 words per page. In this long, florid, allusive, and informative letter, Prosper Wetmore (ally of the "Albany Regency" and author of Lexington, With Other Fugitive Poems, 1830, on the American Revolution's opening battle) discusses literature and politics with state democratic party leader Governor William Marcy (DAB 12:274-277) soon after Marcy was succeeded by the rising Whig William Henry Seward (DAB 16:615-621, esp. 615). Wetmore opens with two pieces of current literary news (speculation about the authorship of the Harper & Brothers novel, Sydney Clifton...A Tale of the Nineteenth Century; and a lengthy characterization of Wetmore's composition of his own forthcoming contribution to the famous "deaf and dumb" poet James Nack's subscription publication, Earl Rupert, And Other Tales and Poems.) He then commences a showy discussion of his current reading, some of which Governor Marcy had suggested. Sir William Temple, Abraham Cowley, and Algernon Sidney figure largely in this discussion; John Milton, John Evelyn, and the eighteenth century's Horace Walpole also appear. Before quoting selections from Cowley's poetry and prose, Wetmore dwells for almost a page on the "stern Republican" (Wetmore's phrase) Algernon Sidney. Wetmore finds particular resonance in a passage that he quotes to illuminate the character of "the late Mr. Leggett," i.e., the New York Jacksonian journalist and rigid abolitionist William Leggett (AB 11: 147-148). The passage is important, for it demonstrates that the continuing relevance of Sidney's republicanism was by no means lost in American literary and political circles between the American Revolution and Robert C. Winthrop's ground-breaking historical study of Josiah Quincy's pre-Revolutionary reading, his 1853 lecture Algernon Sidney (published 1854). (More than a century later Winthrop's lecture would be writ large by Bernard Bailyn as The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution.) From the lofty heights of Sidney and his 17th century comrades, Wetmore descends for his letter's final two pages to dig into the mechanics of political funding and strategic entrapment of his and Gov. Marcy's Whig foes. When Wetmore shifts from Literature to politics, his prose style shifts too (cf. the dufference between his prose in Paisley, A Local Sketch [on New York City's Paisley Place] and in his Remarks in the Assembly... on the Bill "To Expedite the Construction of a Rail-Road from New York to Lake Erie [Albany, 1836]).

His experiences ranged from selling patent medicine (water colored red and pills made from Texas mud) to speculating in shady land deals (from which he profited enough to acquire a "vehicle agency".) - Graff. The "XYZ Affair" was caused when after the ratification of "Jay's Treaty" the French took a resentful attitude towards America because certain privileges were taken away from her. Monroe was recalled from France from his ministerial post. The French refused to receive his replacement, Pinckney. This caused a diplomatic crisis, which further was complicated when the French demanded $250,000 in order to hear American business concerns. America refused and the crisis came to a boiling point when the United States prepared for war. Evans 34838. Sabin 34870.
