Prasad, Bisheshwar ( general editor) East African Campaigns
Combined Interservices Historical Section (India & Pakistan), no place, 1963. OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE INDIAN ARMED FORCES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-45. This series was under the editorship of Bisheshwar Prasad and published by the Combined Inter-services Historical Section (India and Pakistan). There were a total of 24 volumes published in 4 sub-series: General War Administration and Organisation; Campaigns in the Eastern Theatre; Campaigns in the Western Theatre; Medical Series. The editorial standard was high, with considerable detail backed up by extensive charts, tables, and appendices. The production standard is unfortunately low, reflecting the materials available in India. The bindings are of low quality, with gilt often dull and indistinct, with dustwrappers of cheap pale blue paper. The cloth is dark blue on all but the medicals which are dark red. Fine copies in most cases did not exist even when new, and the damp Indian climate is notorious for destroying books. In most cases, authors of individual volumes are not identified. 180 pages, 4 appendices, 20 maps, 48 illustrations. A smaller volume on a specific area. Covers operations against the Italians in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan. Damp has seriously weakened the binding as is so typical. Gilt almost gone. in frayed dj.

Churchill, Winston S. The Story of the Malakand Field Force
Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1898. The first printing of Churchill’s first book, based on his exploits with The Malakand Field Force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. Bound in apple green cloth with gilt titles. 336 pages plus catalogue at rear. 6 maps plus frontis portrait. Publication arranged by Churchill’s cousin as he was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors, later corrected in the Silver Library edition of 1899. Woods bibliography indicates two “states” based on the presence of an errata slip. Subsequent research indicates otherwise, so no precedence should be construed from such a slip. Original pale green cloth, which suffers from white flecks probably from damp. The gilt is bright but there are also stains and grubby areas on the cloth, so external appearance is rather unattractive. Original black endpapers are untouched. Gutterbreak after half title which is heavily browned. Neat owners inscription dated may 1898 on back of frontis portrait, which still has protective tissue. Moderate foxing throughout, heavy in a few places. No errat slip, Publishers catalogue dated 12/97 bound in at rear. All the signs of an early issue. Whilst far from fine, this copy suffers from age, rather than wear. (ICS A1a)
