CHRISTIE, AGATHA. MEURTRE AU GALOP: LARGE MAGNIFICENT STONE LITHOGRAPHED ROGER
1963 CHRISTIE, AGATHA. MEURTRE AU GALOP: LARGE MAGNIFICENT STONE LITHOGRAPHED ROGER SOUBIE POSTER FOR THE FIRST FRENCH RELEASE OF THIS MISS MARPLE FILM, MURDER AT THE GALLOP MADE IN ENGLAND FOR MGM IN 1963. Paris: Cinemato, 1963. 47"x63" poster lithographed from Soubie's art by Cinemato. One of the most beautiful crime-film posters we've ever seen. Soubie's movie posters hang in every major collection, including several of the world's top-rank art museums, and this is a museum quality example. The slightly surrealist image of Robert Morley in a dark overcoat, casting a broad flashlight beam on the body of a handsome, white-bearded man in a bathrobe, obviously quite dead, with the greenish visage of Margaret Rutherford, who portrayed Miss Marple, looking on in horror. The most conspicuous credit is to Agatha Christie, with crime writer Lawrence P. Bachmann listed as producer. Slightly smaller than an American 3-sheet, the poster is in excellent condition, professionally linen-backed without any signs of retouching or repair. Very fine condition.

[CAIN,PAUL]. GAMBLING SHIP: BRITISH PRESSBOOK FOR THE 1933 PARAMOUNT MOVIE WITHCAR
1933 [CAIN, PAUL]. GAMBLING SHIP: BRITISH PRESSBOOK FOR THE 1933 PARAMOUNT MOVIE WITH CARY GRANT AND BENITA HUME, WHICH WAS BASED ON A STORY, AND PROBABLY SCRIPTED AS WELL, BY PAUL CAIN, WRITING AS PETER RURIC. 1933. The 8pp., 9-1/2x12" Press Sheet and AD sales catalogue (British theaters had to buy the posters they selected for each movie) shows all of the film's posters, lobby cards, etc., as well as ready made newspaper stories and promotion campaigns about the movie and its two stars, Cary Grant and Benita Hume. Perhaps the most important content to the collector of crime fiction, is its large credit to Peter Ruric as "author," just below the credits to Louis Gasnier and Max Marcin as directors. Apparently the Ruric credit doesn't appear on any of the U.S. posters, etc. for this film. Halliwell credits the script to co-director Max Marcin and "Seton I. Miller," which may or may not be yet another pseudonym for George Sims, the name which was used on Cain/Ruric's death certificate in 1966, and that may not be this author's "real" name. To further add to the mystery, it has been suggested that the Gambling Ship script was based on a)Paul Cain's only novel Fast One, b)one of Cain's Black Mask stories, possibly one that appeared in his book of short stories, Seven Slayers, or c) the novel The Virgin Kills, written by fellow Black Mask contributor, Raoul Whitfield. Raymond Chandler called Paul Cain's fiction, "some kind of high point in the ultra-hardboiled manner." There are only two books written by Paul Cain and now there's this interesting press book with its conspicuous Peter Ruric credit. Fine in pictorial wrappers. Scarce.
