Chicago, 1861, 7pp. Semi circular damp stain at bottom center margin, 6" diameter. Unsigned cvr artlitho shows an enormous flag furling above a portrait of Elsworth guarded by two Zouaves. At the bottom a closed casket reposes beneath a black pall. Elsworth, close friend of Lincoln in Illinois, recruited his Fire Zouaves (from the NYC Fire Dept.) & w/them captured the City of Alexandria on May 24, 1861. For his efforts in tearing down a Confederate Flag, Elsworth receive a short gun blast that made him the "1st Martyr for the Union. (Sifakis, Who Was Who in the Civil War, quoting Ruth Randall's biog. of Elsworth). This is a scarce memorial piece w/OCLC reporting no copies (among six) in Illinois. Military.
