(Gardner) (Virginia)(Politics) THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SAM, IN VIRGINIA
Richmond, 1856, (2),1,vii,12-308,(4)pp., 12mo. A remarkably good copy. Some soil to bkstrp. Bkstrp gilt very legible. Two interior cancelled lib. stamps, no outside marks. Really an attack on the Know-Nothing Party. Virginia's H. A. Wise stomped 'em! Swem 3158 suggests Henry A. Wise. Haynes and Cavalier are silent. Sabin 41004 and Cushing assign to "Gardner." Wright II 976 attributes to Gardner, & that is the most recent of all the entries. (I was tempted to observe that usually Wright writes right, but I resisted!). Fairly scarce & your key to Wise contention. Last copy here 13 years ago, and no first ed. elsewhere.
