From his sketchbook are "35 toys reproduced here for the first time and in full color...purposely designed to be made of inexpensive materials--plywood, papier-mache, even cardboard--so they could be sold at the lowest possible price." Arnold, poet & journalist, was the principal of the government Sanskrit College at Poona in 1856. There he studied oriental languages, mastering Turkish, Persian, and certain Indian tongues. "His demeanour as principal during the trying time of the Mutiny won him commendation from the Indian Government."
