By the time he left home at 17, Caldwell had witnessed such varieties in religious experience as Church of God all-night camp meetings, Holy Roller exhibitions on splintery wooden floors, primitive Christian baptismal immersions in muddy creeks, Seventh Day Adventist foot-washings, Body of Christ blood-drinking communions, Kingdom of God snake-handlings, Full Redeemer glossolalia services, and Fire Baptized Holiness street-corner rallies" (University of Georgia Press). PENN, William Document signed by Richard Hill, Isaac Norris, and James Logan
(PHILADELPHIA). Original document signed by Richard Hill, Isaac Norris, and James Logan. [Philadelphia]: December 30, 1717. Folio, one vellum sheet, with great wax seal of William Penn attached. Mounted in shadow-box frame measuring 19 inches by 18 inches. $2500. Pennsylvania land purchase document for 250 acres in Bradford Township by James Steel, together with the Philadelphia lot at the southeast corner of Third and Mulberry Streets (now Arch Street), signed by Penn's three agents in Philadelphia, with the great wax seal of William Penn attached. In handsome shadow-box frame. In 1681 Charles II granted to William Penn, as payment for a debt owed to the latter's deceased father, a "great tract of land north of Maryland," which the King insisted be named "Pennsylvania" in honor of the elder Penn. It was not until 1682 that Penn first traveled to America, although during the months preceding his journey he had made extensive preparations for settling the colony. Among these preparations was the publication of a promotional pamphlet, Some Account of the Province of Pennsilvania (1681), in which Penn makes a novel offer to prospective land owners: "land in town as well as the principal grant in the country" (Bronner, 266). This document, executed in December of 1717, is for the purchase of 250 acres of farmland in Bradford Township by James Steel from its previous owner, William Bryant of Berks County, Great Britain. With it came a premium plot in Philadelphia, measuring 100 by 150 feet at the southeast corner of Third and Mulberry Streets (now Arch Street). The document is written in fine English uncials, with the signatures of Penn's Philadelphia agents, Richard Hill, Isaac Norris, and James Logan boldly inscribed across the bottom. Restoration to wax seal. Exceptionally good condition.

Americans did not realize it at the time, but, when Carnegie made this decision, the industrial supremacy of the United States was born. In his married life Carnegie was fortunate. His wife, Louise Whitfield of New York, made not only an ideal companion and an accomplished hostess, but she sympathized with all his plans for distributing his wealth and assisted him in executing them" (DAB). RAVEL, Maurice Daphnis & Chloe
RAVEL, Maurice. Daphnis & Chloé. Ballet en un Acte. Fragments Symphoniques 2e Série. Lever du Jour-Pantomime-Danse Générale. Paris: Durand, (1913). Folio, original printed paper boards. $3500. Association copy of the full score of one of the two orchestral versions of Ravel's ballet, often considered his greatest work, inscribed by noted conductor Charles Munch on the front pastedown: "En Souvenir a mon premiere concert a Denver. le 7 Nov. 48. Charles Munch." Ravel began working on Daphnis & Chloé in 1909 after being commissioned by Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes. The work took Ravel three years, and the early performance history was fraught with difficulties, including at one point a rather bitter argument between Ravel and Diaghilev that was worked out quite publicly in letters to various newspapers. Despite the controversy, the work, "his most ambitious stage work of all," was immediately recognized as a masterpiece (New Grove 15: 611). Ravel also produced two orchestral suites of the work, this copy being the second of those works. "The finest of all French ballets... Daphnis et Chloé now survives not so much in the theatre as in the concert hall, through performances of the two orchestral suites into which Ravel split the ballet... Daphnis et Chloé is a tone poem in all but name, achieving, through adroit orchestration, vivid characterizations of the two lovers, Daphnis's rival (the brutish Dorcon), and the gang of pirates who abduct Chloé (the story is taken from a third-century pastoral poem)" (Classical Music, 332). Charles Munch (1891-1968), who has inscribed this copy, was one of the greatest conductors of his generation and a friend and colleague of Ravel. He is perhaps best known for his work on French composers, particularly Ravel: he in fact recorded Daphnis & Chloé twice, both times with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which he led from 1948 to 1962. (Those recordings are today still considered the standard against which all subsequent ones are measured.) He has inscribed this copy to conductor Antonia Brico, perhaps the most celebrated female conductor of the twentieth century. A native of the Netherlands, Brico grew up in the United States and studied conducting both here and abroad. Her talent was immediately recognized; while still in her twenties, she became a popular conductor, working with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Los Angeles and San Francisco Symphonies, and the New York Philharmonic, among others, routinely being the first woman conductor an orchestra worked with. After working in New York throughout the thirties, she settled in Denver in 1940, where she became conductor of the Denver Community Orchestra. In 1974, Judy Collins, Brico's most famous student, made a widely seen documentary on Brico (Antonia: Portrait of a Woman) that produced many new invitations to conduct, at places such as Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. In this copy Brico has written a list of conductors, orchestras, times and places, presumably times she heard Daphnis & Chloé performed. All of the performances are in New York up to 1938; the last two listed are Ormandy with Philadelphia in Denver in 1946 and Munch with the National Orchestra de France in Denver on November 7, 1948, the date of the inscription. Front hinge starting, but interior otherwise fine. Light edgewear to original boards, a bit of discoloration to rear board. A near-fine copy with a wonderful provenance.

A co-founder of the Marburg School of Critical Idealism with Paul Natorp, Hermann Cohen is generally considered to be that school of thought's leading thinker and most outspoken representative. PENNSYLVANIA Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
[PENNSYLVANIA]. Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Established by the general Convention. Carefully Compared With the Original.... Philadelphia: Francis Bailey, 1784. Octavo, unbound, stitched as issued; pp. (1)-64. $1500. Early edition of the important 1776 Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, "the most extreme of the Revolutionary state constitutions," printed by order of the Council of Censors. From a private family collection. "The states began the process of establishing new constitutions soon after British royal authority began to disintegrate... a few, like Pennsylvania, staked out radical new forms of government... The Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776 was the most extreme of the Revolutionary state constitutions. Framed by radical leaders with little practical political experience, it attempted to bring the entire government within the control of the people..." (A Covenanted People, 45-48). "In 1776 Pennsylvania adopted a new constitution that has been described as the most democratic in America... In late June [1776]... convention representatives met in Philadelphia and by July 8 elected delegates to write a new state constitution. Deliberations began one week later under the chairmanship of Benjamin Franklin. While it appears that George Bryan, James Cannon, and Benjamin Franklin were the principal authors of the new constitution, others such as George Clymer. Timothy Matlack and even Thomas Paine might have been involved in its creation. Influenced by the language of the Stamp Act congress, the First Continental Congress, and the Declaration of Independence, the authors crafted a document that proclaimed in detail the rights of citizens and expanded the voting franchise to all tax-paying free men... A Council of Censors was created whose members were to be elected every seven years to conduct, for a year, an evaluation of the activities of the government and to 'censure' those actions that were deemed to have violated the new constitution. Any changes to the constitution could only be made through this Council of Censors" (Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission). Following passage of the constitution by the convention at the end of September 1776, the first edition was published; a reprinting followed a year later, and another edition was printed in 1781 with the Articles of Confederation. A new constitution was adopted in 1790, after the end of the Revolutionary War. The constitution is followed here by, "A Report of the Committee Appointed to Enquire, 'Whether the Constitution has been preserved inviolate in every Part, and whether the legislative and executive Branches of Government, have performed their Duty as Guardians of the People, or assumed to themselves or exercised other or greater Powers, than they are intitled to by the Constitution.'" Evans 18680. Sabin 60015. Title page and first leaf of text worn with some chipping and loss to edges, affecting a few letters. Occasional minor foxing; some wear to corners of last few leaves. A desirable unbound copy of this rare early printing of an influential state constitution.

GREENAWAY, Kate Almanack Series
GREENAWAY, Kate. Almanack Series... For the years 1883 through 1895. London and New York: George Routledge, 1883-1895. Sixteen volumes. 12mo, twelve in original publisher's pictorial boards and cloth, three in original gilt-stamped imitation morocco, one in original hand-painted paper wrappers and satin-ribbon stitching. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000. First editions of Kate Greenaway's beloved Almanack Series, including a variant issue for 1892 and additional variants for 1885, 1886, and 1894. "In the portrayal of childhood, no Victorian artist could combine charm, beauty and gentleness with such style as Kate Greenaway, the undisputed queen of nursery books" (Dalby, 26). In 1883 the first of Kate Greenaway's diminutive almanacs for children was published. "Its gratifying success [especially in America] encouraged artist, printer Edmund Evans, and publisher George Routledge to embark on a regular yearly series" (Morgan Library 177). "Comprised of eight to ten pages, and measuring three inches by two inches, these miniature books featured some of her most accomplished work" (Dalby, 29). No almanac was published in 1896, but for 1897 the firm of J.M. Dent brought out the last and final volume in the series. Notably, this volume is also the rarest and is often missing in sets of the almanacs. This set includes two issues of the Almanack for 1885 (Schuster & Engen 5.3a and 5.3c), two issues for 1886 (Schuster & Engen 6.4c and 6.4e), and two issues for 1894 (Schuster & Engen 14.12a and 14.12b). Schuster & Engen, Almanack Series: 3.1a, 4.2a, 5.3a, 5.3c, 6.4e, 6.4c, 7.5a, 8.6d, 9.7b, 10.8a, 11.9a with original paper mailing wrapper, 12.10a with variant blue spine instead of green, 13.11a, 14.12a, 14.12b, and 15.13a. Morgan Library 177, 178. Six with bookplates from the library of F.H. Goodyear, the 19th-century New York rail and lumber magnate. For the most part in exceptionally lovely condition with only occasional very light wear or foxing. A wonderful collection with a fine provenance.

CRUIKSHANK, George George Cruikshank's Omnibus
CRUIKSHANK, George. George Cruikshank's Omnibus. Illustrated With One Hundred Engravings on Steel and Wood. London: Tilt and Bogue, 1842. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter olive morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. $750. First edition in book form, containing 22 engravings on steel and 78 woodcuts, all but three by Cruikshank. "George Cruikshank succeeded his father and James Gillray as England's chief artist in comic ephemerae of all sorts. He could toss off city types and scenes from memory ... and possessed an enthusiastic middle-class following. Cruikshank was at his best as an interpretive illustrator in books that permitted him to exercise his talent for comic exaggeration without distorting the author's intent" (Hodnett, 114). In 1837 Richard Bentley published the first number of his once famous Miscellany, for which Cruikshank designed a cover, and supplied, as time went on, some 126 plates. Some of the illustrations are very unequal in merit, and can only be accounted for by the supposition that he was out of sympathy with his work or fretting for other enterprises. In 1841, when at variance with Bentley, though still under engagements to him, Cruikshank started a magazine of his own, The Omnibus, with Laman Blanchard for editor. Thackeray, who wrote 'The King of Brentford's Testament,' was one of the contributors" (condensed from DNB). Cruikshank's Omnibus first appeared in nine monthly parts from May 1841 to January 1842, shortly after his limited but very fruitful alliance with Charles Dickens. This is the first edition in book form, with a general title page. Cohn 190. Owner signature (and monogram on spine). Scattered foxing to plates. Paper restoration to the Heartwell plate (not affecting image). Minor abrasions to boards. A lovely copy.

Quarto, original glazed pictorial boards. $500. First edition, abundantly illustrated by Greenaway. Said to contain "some of her most delightful" illustrations, A Day in a Child's Life is a lovely example of one of Greenaway's successful collaborations with other artists to create delightful books for children and adults alike (A Critical History of Children's Literature, 254). This volume of children's music is illustrated in Greenaway's characteristic style, rich "with a vision of sunlit and flower-surrounded children... that inspired... devoted readers and countless imitators" (Carpenter and Prichard, 225-27). GERARDE, John Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes
GERARDE, John. Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes...Very Much Enlarged and Amended By Thomas Johnson Citizen and Apoyhecarye of London. London: A. Islip, J. Norton and R. Whitakers, 1636. Thick folio, period-style full red morocco gilt, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine. $11,000. Revised and expanded edition of Gerarde's esteemed Herball containing over 2700 delicate woodcuts in text, beautifully bound by Frost of Bath. "Gerarde wrote during that golden age of literature when it seemed impossible not to write vivid and lively prose. As a result, Gerarde's Herball is a work of great value and charm that has been read and loved by generations of English gardeners and botanists. Gerarde's book was regarded as the undoubted standard work for over a quarter of a century, until the rival herbal of John Parkinson was nearing completion. Fearing competition, the publishers resolved on a new and revised edition. For this they had the wisdom (or good fortune) to engage Thomas Johnson...Johnson added eight hundred new species and seven hundred woodcuts." This is the second edition of Gerarde's Herball edited by Johnson (the previous edition appeared in 1633). Title page restored and a bit trimmed, occasional marginal paper repairs, scattered faint foxing and dampstaining; binding in fine condition. A lovely copy.

BODMER, Karl Encampment of Piekann Indians

Folio (measures 20-1/2 by 14 inches), mounted and matted. $1800. Early printing of Bodmer's 43rd plate made during his travels into the "deep west" with Baron Braunsberg, Prince Maximilian, in June 1833, finely hand-colored. The print depicts the three tribes of the Blackfeet at McKenzie on the Marias River, erroneously identified as the Muscleshell River in McKenney and Hall. "These three hard-riding, maraudering, and treacherous tribes were the Huns of the plains. War was their god and they broke as many treaties as the white man. The Piegans [Piekanns] were the most congenial of the three tribes" (Horan, 354). Bright, clean lithograph with a few small closed tears. A lovely print.

MAP Carte de la Lorraine et du Barrois
(MAP OF FRANCE). Carte de la Lorraine et du Barrois dans laquelle se trouvent la Généralité de Metzet Autres Enclaves. [Nancy: no publisher], 1756. Framed size: 29 inches by 25 inches. $750. Large, hand-colored map of Lorraine, depicting the territory awarded to the King of Poland as consolation following his failed attempt in 1733 to regain his crown. Stanislas Leszczynski, Duc de Lorraine, was placed on the throne of Poland in 1704 by Swedish King Charles XII following the defeat of the occupying Russian Army. Five years later Leszczynski himself was deposed after the Swedish loss to the Russians at the Battle of Poltava. In 1733, he attempted to regain Poland-the conflict lasting five years and again ending in his defeat. However, as consolation, the subsequent Peace Accord of Vienna (1738) awarded Leszczynski the continued use of his title, King of Poland, and life-long governance over Lorraine and Barrois. Here he became a staunch patron of the arts and architecture and a good friend to Voltaire. This map, drawn by Robert de Vaugondy and engraved by M. C. Haussard, delineates his territory. The hand-colored cartouche displays the instruments of the arts and the arms of Lorraine in the grasp of the Polish eagle. Fine condition, handsomely framed.

ORTELIUS, Abraham Hispaniae Novae Sivae Magnae
ORTELIUS, Abraham. Hispaniae Novae Sive Magnae Recens et Vera Descriptio 1579. Antwerp: no publisher, 1579. Folio, matted in blue and framed, the entire piece measures 25 by 21 inches. $1250. Handsome hand-colored map from an early edition of the "first modern geographical atlas" (Brown, 162). Commissioned to remedy the cartographical inconveniences of "the balky ways of big [maps]... and the eyestrain a man suffered from trying to decipher the print on very small" maps, Ortelius created Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first uniformly collected and bound atlas (Brown, 161). "Unlike earlier compositions..., each of Ortelius' maps was engraved specifically for his atlas according to uniform format" (Shirley, 144). Also unlike its predecessors, the Theatrum is the first publication to admit the symbolic equality of the Americas among the three better-known continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe, with its inclusion of a fourth figure on the ornamental title page among the traditional three (Brown, 163). This wonderfully detailed map of New Spain, beautifully hand-colored with three decorative title cartouches in Latin, is a rarity; of the roughly 5875 copies published, only a few remain. A fine piece. Scarce.

STRAVINSKY, Igor Pulcinella, proof copy
STRAVINSKY, Igor. Pulcinella proof copy. No place: J. & W. Chester, [1920]. Quarto, 50 leaves printed on the recto, unbound as issued. $7800. Proof copy of the first edition of the piano-vocal score, with notations throughout by Stravinsky and others. The first leaf is marked "private" and has written at the top "These proof copies belong to the publisher J & W Chester and should not be used for performance"; each leaf contains the stamp of the Ballets Russes. Based on a 17th-century Pergolesi manuscript featuring Pulcinella, the traditional hero of the Neapolitan commedia dell'arte, Pulcinella is "more an action dansante than a ballet... the effect on his own style was not immediately apparent. (There is no sign of Pergolesi's influence in his next two works-the Concertino and the Symphonies of Wind Instruments). But, as he says in his Memories, his work on Pulcinella undoubtedly led to a new appreciation of eighteenth-century classicism on his part and to a new style of composition distinguished by certain classical features... As he says in his Expositions, 'Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible'" (White, Stravinsky, 246-8). With corrections to text, tempo, volume, and emphasis throughout. Incomplete, with the first 50 pages only. Edgewear to the leaves, text clean and fine. A fascinating document from a pivotal point in Stravinsky's career.

LAMB, Charles Essays of Elia and Last Essays of Elia

Dent & Co.; New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1909. Two volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter crushed brown morocco, raised bands, gilt-decorated spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $350. Lovely illustrated edition of Lamb's Essays of Elia, and Last Essays of Elia, with 70 full-page designs by Charles Brock and almost as many head- and tailpieces. Beautifully bound by Bickers & Son. "The prose essays under the signature of Elia form the most delightful section amongst Lamb's works." "They are carefully elaborated; yet never were works written in a higher defiance to the conventional pomp of style. A sly hit, a happy pun, a humorous combination, lets the light into the intricacies of the subject... [Lamb] gives an importance to every thing, and sheds a grace over all" (Allibone, 1050, 1049). The first series of these popular essays appeared in the London Magazine between 1820 and 1822; the second series, between 1823 and 1825. This edition is illustrated by Charles Brock, who took extraordinary care to period dress, furniture, and accoutrements-to the extent of "having full-scale costumes made up and using models" (Hodnett, 196). The Fashionable Swindler, or, Villainy Displayed; Being the Genuine History, and Surprising Events, Frauds, Deception and Remarkable Occurrences, of the Celebrated and Elegant Sharper, Geroge R-. London: J. Bailey, [1812]. Octavo, contemporary full tan calf gilt. $1600. First edition, inscribed by George Cruikshank on the full-color folding frontispiece, "By my Brother I.R.C. G. Ck.," handsomely bound by Larkins. Both caricaturists and book illustrators throughout the 19th century, the Cruikshank brothers enjoyed very different levels of success during their careers. It is widely considered that "as a caricaturist [ George Cruikshank] was the legitimate successor of Rowlandson and Gillray; but both the broad grin of the one and the satiric ferocity of the other were mitigated in their pupil by a more genial spirit of fun and an altered environment" (DNB). Isaac "Robert" Cruikshank's reputation, on the other hand, "may have suffered to some extent from the superior popularity of his brother George. But it is certain that with many happy qualities as a draughtsman and pictorial satirist, he had neither the individuality, the fancy, nor the originality of his junior" and is perhaps better known for his collaborative efforts with his brother (DNB). Although "noted by G. Cruikshank to be 'By my brother I.R.C.' in the Douglas copy, ... there seems to be a lot of George's work in it... Douglas accepts this as George's work, and possibly he assisted his brother, as was often the case in items of this description" (Cohn 306). Three owner bookplates, one belonging to J. Barton Townsend, and one stamp. Interior clean. Some rubbing to spine; outer hinges just splitting, still strong. An extremely good inscribed copy, very scarce.

Many of his etchings are masterpieces of grouping (he managed crowds as well as Rowlandson, or the painter of the 'March to Finchley'), and Cruikshank's lushly colored frontispiece illustration for The Impostor Unmasked, depicting Sheridan's address to the electors, is a lovely example of his mastery of crowd images (DNB). SHACKLETON, Ernest Photograph: 'Digging': Heart of the Antarctic II:56
(SHACKLETON, Ernest). "Digging to Ascertain the Depth of Snow Covering a Depot Left by the Discovery Expedition" [Antarctica: 1908]. Original silver bromide photograph (9-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches), contemporary dark gray mount, entire piece measures 20 by 23 inches. $4500. Original silver bromide photograph depicting three explorers fully-entrenched beneath a flag planted six years earlier by the Discovery Expedition, taken on the morning of January 27, 1908 and used as an illustration in The Heart of the Antarctic. In Heart of the Antarctic Ernest Shackleton recounts his 1907-09 "Nimrod Expedition"-the first to reach the Magnetic South Pole and the first to ascend the active volcano Mt. Erebus. Information gathered during this expedition substantially increased knowledge of the geology and biology of the region. To document the journey visually, the explorers took ten cameras, including one for motion pictures. Various members of the party manned the cameras, of whom James Murray and assistant geologist Sir Philip Brocklehurst were the most eager. "There was a bamboo pole about eight feet high projecting from the snow, with a tattered flag attached to it..." This authentic photograph, later captioned "Digging to Ascertain the Depth of Snow Covering a Depot Left by the Discovery Expedition" appears as one of the illustrations in the first edition of Heart of the Antarctic (London: William Heinemann, 1909), opposite page 56 in Volume II. Nice, complete 19th-century baseball guides are scarce, Henry Chadwick's Beadle Guides (published 1860-1881) are exceptionally so. Interior generally quite clean, with only a little light foxing. CRUIKSHANK, George Tom & Jerry; or, Life in London
(CRUIKSHANK, George and Robert). Tom & Jerry; Or, Life in London... The Costumes and Scenery, superintended by Mr. J.R. Cruikshanks, from the Drawings of himself and his Brother, Mr. G. Cruikshanks, the celebrated Artists of the original work. London: John Lowndes, [ca. 1825]. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter blue polished calf gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. $850. Early edition libretto of a musical dramatization of the popular stories, with a hand-colored folding frontispiece illustration by the Cruikshank brothers. In 1821 Pierce Egan began publishing monthly part publications narrating the urban exploits of Tom and Jerry, a duo whose popularity led them to a popularity rivaling that of Dickens' "Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller a few years later" (Muir, 41). George and (Isaac) Robert Cruikshank, the original illustrators for the continuing stories of Tom & Jerry, also provided etchings for the numerous reprints of the original and printed publications related to its multiple dramatizations. The frontispiece drawing of this libretto, depicting "Mr. Wilkinson, Mr. Burroughs & Mr. Wrench, As Logic, Jerry & Corinthian Tom," is credited to both Robert and George Cruikshank, though it is thought that Robert was perhaps more responsible for a majority of the project's drawings. "The greater part of the illustrations -two-thirds, it is said- were by Robert Cruikshank; and his son (according to Blanchard Jerrold, Life of George Cruikshank, 1883, pp. 82-3) claimed the original idea for his father, who, he says, 'conceived the notion, and planned the designs, while showing a brother-in-law, just returned from China, some of the "life" which was going on in London at the time. He designed the characters of Tom, Jerry, and Logic, from himself, his brother-in-law, and Pierce Egan, keeping to the likenesses of each model'" (DNB). "Nobody," however, "has succeeded in allocating between the Cruikshanks the proportion of work" produced for the Tom & Jerry series (Muir, 41). Not in Cohn. Bookplates. Interior generally clean. Minor rubbing to extremeties. A near-fine copy.

SHACKLETON, Ernest Photograph: 'Side of the Ferrar' For: Heart of the Antarctic II:318
SHACKLETON, Ernest. Original photograph, captioned "The Side of the Ferrar Glacier Western Mountain" and used in The Heart of the Antarctic. Ferrar Glacier: 1908. Original silver gelatin photograph, measuring 22-1/4 by 15-3/4 inches, mount measures 27 by 20-1/2 inches. $7000. Splendid very large original silver gelatin photograph depicting the southern side of Ferrar Glacier, "where [ice] descends as a series of ice-falls," taken on December 22, 1908. "The main object of our journey up the Ferrar Glacier was to examine the beacon sandstone at any accessible exposures with a view to the discovery of any traces of former organic life..." This authentic photograph, later captioned "Side of Ferrar Glacier. Figure of Man in Lower Left Corner" appears as one of the illustrations in the first edition of Heart of the Antarctic (London: William Heinemann, 1909), appearing opposite page 318 in Volume II. Small abrasion, translucent spot, and few minor scratches to surface. Re-mounted (original mount present, with additional caption on verso). Near-fine condition.

(CRUIKSHANK, George). The Lord of the Manor; An Opera, in Three Acts: Altered from General Burgoyne, by Charles Dibdin, Jun. [London: Sherwood, 1825-27]. Octavo, contemporary paper wrappers. Housed in custom brown cloth chemise. $1100. First edition, signed by George Cruikshank just beneath the illustration on the first page, from the library of Cruikshank scholar Albert M. Cohn. From The London Stage: A Collection of the Most Reputed Tragedies, Comedies, Operas, Melo-Dramas, Farces, and Interludes, etc., this play is one of a two-year run of weekly issues. The frontispiece woodcut illustration by George Cruikshank is a fine example of his talent for accurately representing the author's work visually: "His illustrations for books have always this advantage, that they are honest and generally effective attempts to elucidate the text, not nowadays an ever-present ambition to the popular artist" (DNB). Cohn 507. Paper wrapper with a bookplate and bookstamp from Albert M. Cohn, the foremost bibliographer of "Cruikshankiana." Bookplate on chemise. Interior clean, with marginal tears to upper corners of pages 9-12, with slight loss. An exceptionally good signed copy. Scarce.

CRUIKSHANK, George Glass and the New Crystal Palace
CRUIKSHANK, George. The Glass and the New Crystal Palace. London: J. Cassell, 1853. Octavo, original paper wrappers. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell box. $1600. First edition, with 11 woodcuts by George Cruikshank, inscribed with a flourish on the front cover: "with the compliments of Geo. Cruikshank." Prior to illustrating The Bottle and the immensely popular and multiply dramatized The Drunkard's Children, Cruikshank "had not been a strict abstainer. He now became one, and henceforth he devoted himself, with all the energy of his nature, to the duty of advocating by his pencil and his practice the cause of total abstinence" (DNB). The Glass and the New Crystal Palace is a clear example of the author's dedication to teetotalism and condemns alcohol as the cause of, robbery, brutality, mischief, blasphemy, murder, madness, destruction, and death in the first plate alone. The rear cover bears advertisements for Cruikshank's other moralistic publications on abstinence, the avoidance of gambling, and "Hints to Housekeepres to Prevent Housebreaking," indicating first edition. Cohn 203 Bookplate. Occasional inoffensive owner marginalia. Text and plates clean. Some rubbing and discoloration to original paper wrappers, with two tears to the rear panel. A near-fine inscribed copy. Scarce.

VITRUVIUS Dix Livres D'architecture de Vitruve
(VITRUVIUS) PERRAULT, [Claude]. Les Dix Livres D'architecture de Vitruve. Corrigez et Traduits nouvellement en Francois, avec des Notes & des Figures. Paris: Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1673. Large folio, period-style full dark brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands. $12,000. First edition of Perrault's Vitruvius, with 65 fine engraved folio plates, many double-page, and numerous in-text woodcut illustrations, beautifully bound in full period-style calf-gilt. Written in the first century B.C., the manuscript of De Architectura was lost for some time and rediscovered in the 15th century. "This handbook on classical architecture is the only Roman work inspired by Greek architecture that has come down to us. It is therefore important as our prime source of many lost Greek writings on the subject... By exemplifying the principles of classical architecture it became the fundamental architectural handbook for centuries... The classical tradition of building, with its regular proportion and symmetry and the three orders-Doric, Ionic and Corinthian-derives from this book... Alberti, Bramante, Ghiberti, Michelangelo, Vignola, Palladio and many others were directly inspired by Vitruvius" (PMM 26). "Doctor, scientist, classicist, and amateur architect, the omnicompetent Perrault combined two distinct books in this treatise, one of the key texts in the history of French architecture. His scholarly translation of Vitruvius earned widespread praise, while the notes carried a controversial attack on the foundations of classicism. Perrault boldly argued that most aspects of beauty, including architectural proportions, were defined not by universal and invariable standards, but by custom" (Avery 84). Without engraved frontispiece. Fowler 418. Occasional inoffensive pencil notations. Slightly darkened title page with faint crease, remargined along top edge. Plates and text generally quite clean and fine. A very beautiful and important work in fine condition, splendidly bound.
