[AUDEN, W. H.] PATCHEN, Kenneth FIRST WILL & TESTAMENT
New Directions New York (1939) First Edition Patchen's second book, consisting of 800 copies, this copy INSCRIBED "with respect and admiration" for W. H. Auden on 10 May 1940 and SIGNED by Patchen. Patchen's first book brought him much acclaim including comparisons to Auden, unlikely as that might seem now. Among Patchen's accomplishments was the initiation of the poetry-and-jazz movement in the late 1950s. Although Auden never seems to have figured in an important way in Patchen's life, the elder poet did take part in a benefit for Patchen two decades after being presented with this book. A truly important presentation copy. Lacking dustwrapper. Backstrip darkened, a few nicks in cloth. Very Good

McCULLERS, Carson REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE
Houghton Mifflin Boston 1941 First Edition INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author for George [Davis] "Who is my Best and Campiest Friend--/And who, also, is the first/person to really take to thisbook-/You have helped me and/encouraged me in all ways/that were in your power-/And you know that I love you./Carson." Davis, a magazine editor who later married Lotte Lenya, made his house in Brooklyn into something of an artists colony serving as a home at various times for McCullers, Auden, Britten, Bowles, Gypsy Rose Lee, and others. Davis discovered the manuscript for REFLECTIONS, which according to Virginia Spencer Carr in THELONELY HUNTER: A BIOGRAPHY OF CARSON MCCULLERS, lay dormant in a dresser drawer for almost a year (p. 99), and urged McCullers to let his magazine, Harper's Bazaar, publish it. The author's inscription clearly shows her gratitude to Davis for his instrumental role in getting this, the twenty-four year old's second book, published. Made into a film in 1967 starring Marlon Brando. A magnificent association copy. Soiled & worn. Good in Fine custom morocco-backed clamshell box.

CHEYNE, George AN ESSAY OF HEALTH AND LONG LIFE
G. Strahan London 1725 Second Edition Blindstamped paneled calf. Chapters on proper diet, exercise, sleeping, etc. Aimed at the lay reader, much of Cheyne's advice was based upon his own hypochondria and continual struggle with obesity--at one time he weighed over 440 pounds. In another work Cheyne described his hypochondria, which he blamed on the English weather, and estimated that a third of his patients were neurotic. Bitting (p. 86) cites only the 1727 French edition, noting it as rare. Crahan 268; Heirs of Hippocrates 761; Osler 2303; Wellcome II, p. 338. Modern bookplate of Nellie Madeleine Brown, M.D. on front endpaper; spine label partly present. Some rubbing & edgewear, short splits in joints. Nice copy.
