Ross, Christian K. THE FATHER'S STORY OF CHARLEY ROSS, THE KIDNAPPED CHILD... From the Home Of His Parents In Germantown...
John E. Potter, Philadelphia: 1876. 1876, Hardcover 431 p. Illustrations. Very worn publisher's cloth binding. On July 1, 1874 two little boys were abducted in front of their family's mansion. It was the first kidnapping for ransom in the history of th e United States. And it would be the major event of its kind until the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. The boys were named Charley and Walter Ross; they were 4 and 6 years old. The two men who kidnapped th em had given the boys candy on previous occasions. That day, however, the men told the boys to climb into their buggy and promised to buy them firecrackers. The boys boarded and they drove off into th e city. Charley would never be seen again. As they drove farther away, Charley wanted to go home and began to cry. The men stopped in front of a store and gave Walter 25 cents. He entered the store an d started choosing firecrackers, while the men drove away with Charley. The boys' father, Christian K. Ross, thought the boys were playing in a neighbor's yard. But soon a neighbor told him that she s aw the boys traveling in a buggy. The father began the search for his son that he would continue until his death. He didn't tell his wife at first, who was recovering from an illness in Atlantic City. Two days later, however, she found out when he began advertising in the newspapers for his sons' return. A stranger found Walter and returned him to his father. Walter related the tale. Two days afte r that, the father received a crude note, saying that Charley would be released for a sum of money. On July 7, came another note demanding $20,000 and instructing the boy's father how to go about payi ng the kidnappers. The father tried to follow the instructions as best he could but never contacted the kidnappers. Later that year, police were investigating the kidnapping of a Vanderbilt child and found a ransom note in that case that matched closely the one for Charley Ross. They identified the handwriting as fugitive convict William Mosher's. Mosher was killed during a burglary in Brooklyn, b ut his partner Joseph Douglas identified Mosher as the kidnapper of Charley Ross. Douglas died insisting that only Mosher had known where Charley was being held. Douglas also said that Charley would b e returned safely in a few days. He never was, and the father spent $60,000 in his futile search. Imposters came forward in the years afterward claiming to be the missing boy. Each was disproved. Char ley's father died in 1897, his mother in 1912. Walter Ross died in 1943. The Ross mansion was torn down in 1926. The Cliveden Presbyterian Church now stands on the site of the kidnapping.

Paulding, James Kirke (1778-1860). THE DUTCHMAN'S FIRESIDE. A Tale. By the Author of Letters from the South, &c.
J. S. Pratt, (Stokesley, Yorkshire and) London: 1847. 1847, Hardcover 448p. + Woodcut frontis. 16mo. 12.5 cm. Mid-19th century half morocco over diamond textured cloth boards. First published in 1831, "The Dutchman's Fireside" appeared in various forms in the U.S. and B ritain. This little 1847 edition is quite scarce. It possibly was intended for a juvenile market, and few copies have survived the hands of little readers. James Kirke Paulding was a true son of the Knickerbocker legacy. Born near Millbrook, New York, he became a collaborator with the young Washington Irving (and William Irving) in the humorous pieces called the "Salmagundi Papers". The success o f this project confirmed his choice of a literary career. He went on to become a prolific and popular author and satirist. His works were prized for their sense of realism and pleasant humor. He drew high praise from contemporaries such as Cooper, Hawthorne, and Poe. He also kept active as a public official and, in 1837, was named Secretary of the Navy under President Martin Van Buren.

Numerous photo illustrations. A very well preserved set. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. Though this particular set was very costly at $ 1.00 for each part! Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. Payne, Edward F. and Harper, Henry H. THE CHARITY OF CHARLES DICKENS. His interest in the Home for Fallen Women and the Strange Case of Caroline Maynard Thompson.
Privately Printed (at the Torch Press) for Charles E. Goodspeed, Boston: 1929. 1929, Hardcover 100p. + Facsimiles. Original full paper covered boards binding. Slipcase. Soiled. First edition. One of only 100 copies, without the Bibliophile insignias, privately printed for Charles E. Goodspeed, as a part of the purchase price of the manuscript material contained in the book. In 1847 Charles Dickens published a pamphlet calling on ''fallen women'' to enter a Home established by his friend Bar oness Burdett-Coutts. For many years this pamphlet was unseen by Dickens collectors and some doubt was expressed as to its very existence. Then, in 1928, Charles E. Goodspeed purchased from the last secretary of the Baroness a copy of the pamphlet together with several letters from a correspondence relating to the home and, in particular, to the efforts of Charles Dickens on behalf of a Miss Caroline Maynard Thompson. These items were purchased from Mr. Goodspeed by the Bibliophile Society. The text of the pamphlet is reprinted here, along with that of the letters. Jun 1 / W34

"I wrote my Travels in the Great Western Prairies with little belief that they would excite attention beyond the circle in which personal friendship would in some sense link the reader with the events narrated. But the very unexpected favor with which that work has been received, has led me to conclude that such matter s, related as far as they may be at all, with fidelity, are valued as useful knowledge. The work now presented is another attempt of the same kind. It differs from the previous one, however, in many p articulars. The Great South Sea, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Californias are its theme. Upper and Lower California, their conquest by the Spaniards, Indians, white inhabitants, their present state , surface, vegetation, streams, plains, mountains, volcanoes, animals - all these as they have been, and now are, will be found fully described.
