Sydenham, Thomas; Johnson, Samuel; Swan, John. THE ENTIRE WORKS OF DR. THOMAS SYDENHAM...
Printed for Edward Cave, London: 1742. 1742, Hardcover Signed by Author(s) Good Full Title: "THE ENTIRE WORKS OF DR. THOMAS SYDENHAM, Newly made English from the Originals: Wherein The History of acute and chronic Diseases, and the safest and most effectual methods of treating them, are faithfully, clearly, and accurately delivered. To which are added, Explanatory and Practical Notes, from the best medicinal Writers. By John Swan, M.D." pp. ix, xxiii, [4], 623, [23]. 8vo. 21 cm. Some age and damp stain. Worn contemporary full leather binding with an early home-made leather back. This copy was owned by the celebrated Dr. Nicholas Belleville, who settled in Trenton, in 1778, and became a well-known physician and educator there. He has signed the book in several places. Also with the small early 19th century printed bookplate of Dr. Joseph D. C. Arts, Philadelphia; and another from later in the century for Dr. S. S. Davis, Boonsboro, Maryland. Dr. Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689) was born near Dorchester, England and began his illustrious career as an officer in the army of Charles I. Later he entered medicine and became a famous London practitioner. He was known for his minute, detailed, careful observations. Though he was not the dominant voice in English medicine while alive, Sydenham is now seen as the most important English physician of the second half of the century. He was a great advocate of close clinical observations as the foundation of therapeutic reform. He is called the English Hippocrates for his insistence on clinical observation. He was skeptical about the utility an anatomy, postmortem examinations, et al. He was one of the first to describe in detail the so-called "Bell's Palsy"; and he will be remembered for reporting the definite clinical entity known as "St. Vitus Dance" (Chorea Minor) in 1686. "The life of Dr. Sydenham" (pp. v-xi) is by the great Samuel Johnson. See: Courtney, p. 12. W114 Mount? **PRICE JUST REDUCED!!

Mercersburg, PA. OLD MERCERSBURG.
Williamsport: 1949. 1949, 219 p. + Illustrations. 4to. Known as a trading center, tannery and mill in the early 1700s, legend has it that the land now known as Mercersburg was purchased from the Indians by James Black for a gu n and a string of beads. Black appeased the Indians with worldly goods which allowed the small town to grow. This was called Peace Pipe and Tomahawk Rights. In 1759 William Smith Sr. bought "Black's T own" and changed the name to "Smith's Town." Smith died in 1775 and his son was the major heir to all of his father's holdings. He later named the town Mercersburg in honor of Hugh Mercer. Mercer serv ed under George Washington in the Revolutionary War. A physician, he came to Mercersburg in 1746 and died in 1777 in the Battle of Princetown. There are many more historical tidbits about Mercersburg and its origins. Presidents, war heros and other dignitaries walked these streets and resided in homes of Mercersburg.

(Middling, Theophilus), Editor. JOHNNY APPLESEED'S RHYMES.
Sigma Publishing Co., St. Louis, MO: 1894. 1894, Hardcover 411 p. Original blue cloth binding. XLib. Very scarce. For forty-nine years, John Chapman ("Johnny Appleseed") roamed the American wilderness, devotedly planting apple trees. He created apple orchards in the wildernesses of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana, spanning an estimated area of 100,000 square miles. Some of these trees are still bearing fruit after 150 years. The reason for John's mission is unknown, although it's said he dreamed of a land covered with blossoming apple trees; of a land where no one went hungry because apples were plentiful. John's gentleness and cour age were legendary even in his own time. He walked alone in the wilderness, without gun or knife. He chopped down no trees, and killed no animals. He was respected and appreciated by the native Americ an tribes and the new settlers alike. John lived very simply. He slept outdoors, walked barefoot and ate berries and the like. He made his clothes from sacks and wore a tin pot for a hat (and to cook with). Reportedly, John made his drinking water in winter by melting snow with his feet. Even the people of his time were amazed at his endurance. Yet after his death, it was discovered that John was not poor at all. He owned (and leased) considerable areas of land -- on which he planted apple trees, of course. John converted to Swedenborgian religious views, and from then on, mailed regular repor ts of his activities to astonished church authorities in Sweden. This is strange in itself, since Swedenborgians were exceedingly rare in America (roughly 400 in the whole continent). John died of pneumonia at the age of 70, in the home of his friend William Worth, near Fort Wayne, Indiana. He lies buried there under the epitaph "He lived for others."
