Treasury Department of the U.S 46 Manuscript auditors’ reports relating to the accounts of Major ThomasBiddle, Paymaster, U. S. Army, St. Louis, Missouri
[Washington, D.C.], 1821-1831 Major THOMAS BIDDLE (1790 - 1830), eighth child of Captain Charles BIDDLE and Hannah SHEPARD, younger brother of Nicholas Biddle of the famous Pennsylvania family, distinguished himself as a soldier in the War of 1812 and on 15 August 1814 was brevetted major. In 1820 he was made Paymaster in St. Louis, and served in that office for 10 years until he was killed in a duel with Congressman Spencer Pettis. “The duel … occurred on August 27, 1830 … Spencer Pettis, while electioneering during the senatorial canvass of 1830, attacked the president of the United States Bank, Nicholas Biddle, in a campaign speech. His remarks were immediately taken up by Major Thomas Biddle, paymaster in the U.S. Amy and brother to Nicholas, who went to the hotel of the Congressman and cow-hided Pettis as he lay sick in bed. Subsequently, Pettis, having been re-elected to Congress by a large majority, issued a challenge which the Major promptly accepted. Major Biddle, having the choice of distance by being the challenged person, fixed it at five paces because of his short- sightedness. At dawn, the men met on Bloody Island, their pistols almost touching -- so near they stood -- and both were struck at the first exchange. Spencer Pettis died the following day and Major Biddle three days later.” — East St. Louis Action Research Project website The archive here relates to the accounts of Major Biddle as U.S. Paymaster in St. Louis, a post he held until his death. The last three documents included here postdate Biddle’s death, and are addressed to his widow Anne Biddle (BIDDLE, THOMAS) Folio and quarto. Ranging from 1 to 4pp. Some occasion smudges or stains, few documents torn along folds, generally in very good condition. In custom linen clamshell box

Cable, George Washington Old Creole Days. [First Series]
New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1883 A remarkable Twain association, inscribed by Cable on the half-title: “To Mrs. Samuel L. Clemens / from G.W. Cable / Hartford, Nov 20, 1883.” This is a tremendous association copy, as Clemens and Cable were fast friends and mutual admirers; and Olivia Clemens was the frequent host of Cable when he was in Hartford. The two toured the country together twice on reading tours, the first of which being right around the time of this inscription. Furthermore, Clemens, in the winter of 1883-84, according to Paine’s biography, “took Cable’s fortunes in hand…invited him to his home, and undertook to open negotiations with the American Publishing Company, of which Frank Bliss was now the manager, for the improvement of his fortunes.” Cable was staying with the Clemens family in Hartford, recuperating from an illness, when he inscribed this to Livy; it is also the same date that a copy was deposited in the Library of Congress. A superb association copy Later printing. 8vo. . Original blue cloth with light wear, but very good overall; with the morocco ex-libris of Estelle Doheny. BAL 2330 (note)

Wyatt, Leo Engravings by Leo Wyatt: Nine wood engravings of various aphorisms printedin white on different colored backgrounds, in the original blue portfoliowith the artist's wood-engraved title; and a set, similarily housed, offour copper engravings of 17th Century quotations
[Newcastle on Tyne: Leo Wyatt, 1973-1976] Leo Wyatt's profession was that of designing and engraving steel dies and copper plates. In his late fifties, challenged by the assertion that famed English wood engraver Reynolds Stone was seemingly “the sole practitioner of the Chancery Cursive letter in engraved form today” he began to engrave lettterheads and bookplates on wood utilizing this classic letter form. He also created separate alphabets and engraved quotations, bringing samples with him on two trips to America, in 1977 and 1978 where he found a new popularity and market for his work, although suites of his engravings, such as those offered here, remain extremely rare. He died in 1981 The images, of various sizes, average 8-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches, plus generous margins. Each engraving is one of 75 copies, signed and dated by the artist in the lower margin. One copperplate faintly toned, otherwise all very fine condition. Taylor, Leo Wyatt's Little Book of Alphabets, Introduction

Paris: H. L Guérin et L. F. Delatour, 1760 Important work on the cultivation of trees by this prolific 18th-century polymath abd savant (1700-1782), member of the Royal Academy, who published over 100 separate during his prolific lifetime, on a wife range of subjects which engaged his passions for chemistry, botany, agronomy and naval architecture. His most important contribution to agriculture was perhaps his introduction of the methods of cultivation of Jethro Tull into France, with his publication in of TRAITÉ DE LA CULTURE DES TERRES (1750-1761). But Duhamel was above all a great advocate of the Tree in France, and his numerous works on the cultivations of trees and shrubs, as well as forests and forest maintenance, are mong his most important contributions. Previous to this work, Duhamel had published his TRAITÉ DES ARBRES ET ARBUSTES QUI SE CULTIVENT EN FRANCE (1755); and LA PHYSIQUE DES ARBRES (1758). This continuation of “notre travail sur les Forêts,” the author says in his Preface, is, in this case, “purement pratique”; and his aim to place simplified methods of cultivation “within the reach of all sorts of readers.” He divides his work into six books: (1) on terrain, exposure, climate, choice on trees; (2) Different methods of propagating trees; (3) Care of young trees; (4) Transplanting; (5) Forests; (6) Maintenance of Woods and Revitalization of damaged Forests. illustrated by the fine line engravings, this is indeed the work Duhamel most intended for a practical audience First edition. 4to. Stowe, Harriet Beecher Autograph Note, Signed (“H B Stowe”) to Mr. [James Wallace] Black, photographer of Boston, arranging a portrait of her daughter “for herbrother [the author’s son Frederick] who leaves for the seat of war onSaturday”
[Boston, n.d., ca. may 1861] The author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin writes to well known Boston photographer James Wallace Black (1825-1896): “Mr. Black, My daughter Miss Stowe I wish if possible to have taken this morning for her brother who leaves for the seat of war on Saturday. You will oblige me if you wil find a place for her HB Stowe” Arranging a photographic portrait (of her daughter Georgiana?), this tersely worded note belies the profound unease Stowe felt at the prospect of her son Frederick’s imminent departure “for the seat of war.” The unsettled Frederick had dropped out of medical school to enlist in the First Massachusetts Regiment. “Publicly Stowe rejoiced that the young men ‘embrace [the cause] as a bride, and are ready to die [for it]’; privately she prayed with Fred and tried to prepare herself for the worst. In her vivd imagination, Stowe pictured her son in an army camp, subject to the temptations of a soldier’s life; there were some things worse than death” (Hedrick). And in truth the war proved a devastation to Frederick, who transferred to the Seventy-Third Ohio Regiment in March 1863 and was wounded at Gettysburg; he returned home an alcoholic and subsequently disappeared in the West. An excellent Stowe autograph 8vo. One page, pen and ink on paper. Old folds, tipped onto album leaf. Clean and fresh. Hedrick, Harriet Beecher Stowe, pp. 299-300, 306-7. 147 11th St., Pacific Grove, California, dec. 2, 1948 Fascinating postcard from Steinbeck to his good friend, the actor/director Burgess Meredith: “Dear Buzzy: Are you back yet? This little quick jaunt for a picture [THE RED PONY] has been going a long time … I haven't heard from you in a very long time. The Byrens trial is going to happen in January. I will go down to appear. I have never known whether you are in the same action or a separate one. “I am working on Zapata script now and I think it might even be good. I painted my little house inside and out and made repairs and now am ready to fix my garden. New York and the painful past is becoming very remote. The pace is slow here and I have slowed down to match it. Let me hear from you. I want to know what you plan to do next. Saw Paulette for a moment in Mexico. She had a bulls ear (not a cap) | “Do write “John” The reference to the Byrens trial is explained by Jackson Benson (THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF JOHN STEINBECK, NY, 1984, p. 610: “He had made arranges with Lewis Milestone…and Burgess Meredith to do a film of CANNERY ROW, and now one Bernie Byrens was filing a million dollar breach-of-contract suit, alleging that he had acquired the film rights to the novel in 1945.” 5-1/2 x 3-1/4 inches. 1p. Nash, Joseph The Mansions of England in Olden Time. Second Series
[London: Thomas M’Lean, 1840] In all, there were four series issued, in both colored and uncolored state. In its colored state it is, as Tooley remarks, ”one of the most important lithograph books”. Joseph Nash (1808-1878) was a draughtsman and ilustrator, pupil of Pugin, who is best remembered for his picturesque books of architecture, “still regarded as the most accurate views of medieval houses and castles. Nash’s figures in the style of Cattermole, brought the buildings to life, without detracting from theserious antiquarianism of the book.” — Houfe Folio. Hand-colored lithographed title and 25 colored plates after Nash, printed by Hullmandel. Without the page of letterpress (Description of Plates), and without the 2 leaves Dedication and Prospectus sometimes found inserted. Bennet, The Rev. H.L Artist's Scrapbook, containing appproximately 215 mounted pen and inkdrawings, primarily of fox hunters, horses, hounds, foxes, and huntingscenes
n.p, ca. 1847-57 The artist, from internal evidence, seems to be Rev. H.L. Bennet--clearly an ardent and well-connected sportsman, as most of his sketches are portraits and caricatures of well-known hunting men (and women) of the day, many of whom are identified. These include a portrait of Lord Jersey, who Nimrod called “perhaps the most elegant rider for hounds the world has ever seen”, and many others. The drawings are skilfully executed, and are often amusing. A unique production of one of the golden ages of British sport. Bound volume of 26 exquisite Chinese watercolor drawings, 22 on ricepaper, 4 on regular paper
N.p., n.d (ca. 1850?) A remarkably beautiful album of exquisite watercolors mostly on the sheerest and most delicate of membranes: rice paper. These watercolors are mostly of traditional Chinese subjects: birds (ibis, magpie, doves), butterlies, flowers (cherry blossoms, lotus) and flower arrangements, insects (silkworm, butterflies), men and women with Oriental features in costume, as well as two magnificent views of harbors, boats floating in a distant seascape, surrounded by hills and sky. Considering the fragility of the medium, a rare and particularly beautiful survival (RICE PAPER PAINTINGS) 4to. Each drawing approximately 6 1/2 x 8/12 in., mounted within a blue border to larger cards (10 1/2 x 12 1/4 in.). Full (American?) 19th-century purple morocco, covers decorated with delicate gilt floral patterns, spine similarly gilt; minor rubbing to binding. Three of the rice paper drawings have sustained substantial damage in the form of splits affecting the images; six have less marked flaws, mainly marginal. and seven have slight, almost imperceptible irregularities; one has about a three inch square loss, although this image, a still life with vase and flowers, is duplicated. In all, 17 of the 26 drawings show some degree of damage, from minor to extensive and we recommend a personal inspection of the album as a whole

Harding, George P “Elias Ashmole, Esq, Founder of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford”
n.p., [ca. 1813] A fine watercolor rendering, based on Ashmole's Foundation Portrait by John Riley at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, and used as a plate in Ackermann's The History of the University of Oxford, 1814. The watercolor follows Riley very closely, but there are differences: the subject's hand rests on a shorter book, lowering the angle of the arm, there is no ring on the left hand, there are slight differences in costume, and the subject's face appears thinner, giving the impression of a younger man. Beneath the image is lettered in black ink, “Elias Ashmole Esqr. / Founder of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.” Below this, in the large bottom margin is written in pencil, “The Original Drawing by Geo. P. Harding executed for Ackermann, published in The History of the University of Oxford, 2 vols 1814.” Elias Ashmole (1617-1692), scholar, courtier, antiquary, heraldric authority and author of The Institution, Laws, and Ceremonies of the Order of the Garter (1672), inherited, through his friendship with John Tradescant, keeper of the botanical gardens at Chelsea, and his widow, a large collection of artifacts and curiosities, which he offered to Oxford with the stipulation that the University provide a building to house it which, in 1682, it did. (This building, in Oxford's Broad Street, is now the home of The Museum of the History of Science). Thus, while he did not form the collection which bears his name, it was he who catalogued it, brought it to Oxford, ensured its survival, and set the Ashmolean Museum on the path to becoming the world-class institution it is today. A FINE AND HISTORIC PORTRAIT (OXFORD) Image size is 6 x 5 inches; including border and thin gilt frame, the overall dimemsions are 14 x 9 1/2 inches. Pena and ink and watercolor on paper. Very faint waterstaining to the lower right corner, well away from the image, the frame's gilt a little rubbed in places, else fine

Home Rule for Ireland
England, ca. 1914 A British political comment on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Amid celestialclouds a Union Jack-garbed figure of H.H. Asquith turns a grindstone on which a gleeful John Redmond in satanic wings sharpens a sword lettered “HOME RULE” as an angelic David Lloyd George flies away carrying by the coattails a small Irishman, shillelagh in hand. Prime Minister Asquith introduced the Third Home Rule for Ireland Bill to the Commons in 1912, in part to oblige the Irish, on which his Liberal ministry depended. Redmond, leader of the Irish Nationalists, established a balance of power favorable to the Irish and passage of the bill seemed assured. Lloyd George, (then Chancellor of the Exchequer), aware of the heavily pro-English sentiment of Northern Ireland, and of the political dangers of forcing unwilling Protestants under Catholic rule, induced the parties to exempt Ulster from the provisions of the bill, which finally passed in this form. This painting reflects the situation in early 1914: Redmond, with the aid of Asquith, prepares to sever Ireland from the mother country, while Lloyd George symbolically carries the pugnacious Catholic faithful away from the Protestant sanctuary of the North. It is, possibly, the original of a Conservative Party political poster. A UNIQUE PIECE OF POLITICAL PROPAGANDA IN THE HIGHLY UNUSUAL MEDIUM OF OILS (IRELAND) Original oil painting on canvas, unsigned, with caricatures of Asquith, John Redmond and Lloyd George, 19 1/2 x 30 inches, framed in gilt to 22 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches overall. Cserépy, Arpád Album of 89 original pen and ink drawings, probably used as theillustrations to captioned cartoons, all but a few signed in lowermargins, the album lettered “Jllusztrációk 1890-1900 Cserépy 1”
Budapest, 1890-1900 Pasted on the first page of this intriguing album is the cover of a 1900 art exhibition and the page listing this artist, his Budapest address, and the number of his exhibition entry. The drawings are carefully and competently executed, and are mostly of middle-class urban situations, generally involving two individuals in conversation, the settings suggesting that these are drawings for cartoons: smug waiter to irate diner, stage-door johnny to actress, street-vendor to prospect, petitioner to official, etc. Over 35 of the drawings show figures with unflattering, stereotyped anti-Semitic Jewish features, as was unfortunately not uncommon at that time in Europe and elsewhere. A fascinating glimpse of Hungarian turn-of-the-century life, and prejudice The drawings average about 7 x 5 inches; the album is 11-1/2 x 9 inches. . Original 3/4 calf, black cloth sides, spine perished, covers worn, a few minor tears without loss to the album's pages not affecting the mounted drawings, which are in fine condition

In Two Parts. The First contains Assays of Lazarus Erckern, Chief Prover ( oe Assay-Master General of the Empire of Germany)...The Second contains Essays onMetallick Words, as a Dictionary to many pleasing Discourses
London: Printed for and sold by Stephen Bateman, 1686 Pettus was deputy governor of the royal minesfor over thirty-five years. The first part is translated from the German of Erckern, but the second part is Pettus’ own contribution to the lexicography of metals — and wonderfully anecdotal and original it is as this from his entry on “DUNG”: “…among the Indians it was usual, that when they intended Homage to their Superiors, or welcome too their Friends, they did evacuate their Dung into their Hand, and so daub it on the Face of whom they intended to honour or pleasure, and was ever accepted by them, as the first and best of the Welcoming Ceremonies: for Agricola tells us of Mans-Dung made as sweet as Civit. But to return nearer home, when I remained in London, during the great Plague in 1666, Dr. Glisson (famous in his time) being my old Friend and Acquaintance, perswaded me to take a piece of his constant Antidote, which was only the Dung of one that had dyed of the Plague, dryed, and so kept in a foraminous Box, for the best Antidotical Perfume; but I thank God I escaped without it…” Engaging, too, are the delightful engravings which embellish the work Second Edition. Folio. Frontispiece & Illustrated with 44 sculptures. Contemporary quarter calf and boards, rebacked, later endpapers; corner of title-page torn away, first three leaves waterstained at lower edge. A good sound copy. Wing P-1907

Dunne, Finley Peter “Mr. Dooley on the Convention” ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT of this humorous piececoncerning McKinley, TR, and the Convention of 1900
[New York], ca. 1900 Written at the time of the 1900 Presidential Convention, this amusing piece, in “Mr. Dooley's” Irish dialect, deals with the prospect of Theodore Roosevelt's nomination as McKinley's vice-president, which time has shown to be an epochal event in American history. Mr. Dooley lightheartedly notes that, “'Tis well known that Mack was agin Tiddy fi vice-president. Th' las' thing he said to Mark Hanna when he laid down his thrunk at th' deepo was: 'Above all things don't put Rosenfelt on th' ticket...I wudden't fi all th' money in th' wurruld have yr rip this bright an' gallant leader fim' th' sarvice in his native state an' condim him to a horrible existence in Washington fi four years an' give him no chanst fi further priomotion…'”. He continues discussing the appearance and attitudes of TR, and his reluctance to be nominated, ending with his strong suspicion that McKinley wanted him all the time. (A year later, of course, McKinley was assassinated and TR was President). Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) had a distinguished editorial career on a number of newspapers, including William C. Whitney's Morning Telegraph, which led the Whitneys to become his patrons, and subsidize him as they might a son. Most of his “Mr. Dooley” sketches appeared between 1893 and 1905, by which time, having received more than a million Whitney dollars, and no longer needing the income from his pen, he virtually ceased to write. A large factor in Dunne's success was his use of Irish dialect, behind which he could amusingly conceal his very real outrage at the wrongs of the times. He has been called America's greatest humorist after Mark Twain. A SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT Written on 14 11 x 8-1/2 pages in pen and (mostly) pencil, with numerous corrections. . Light soiling to first and last page, a few bits of minor marginal fraying, else fine
