1882-1971 "...You may be interested to know that because of my illustrations, Moby Dick (by an unknown American writer, Herman Melville,) was published in Moscow in a small edition of 8,000 copies. Within a week it had become a collector's item. Promptly, a second edition was issued, this time of 80,000. Within a week or two, this also was exhausted. I don't know what happened since, except that Herman Melville was hailed as a very great American writer. So- if I've done nothing else in my life- I've introduced him to upwards of two hundred million People. "
