Catesby, Mark. Scarlet Ibis.
Stunning print of this oft illustrated bird, from Catesby's "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands, published in London 1754, 2nd edition. Plate T84, entitled "Numenius &c". From "the most famous color plate book of American plant and animal life... (and) a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). "Instead of perpetuating the previous stiff, profile manner of presentation, Catesby devised the method of mingling plants and animals in logical groupings, most often with accuracy and with proportional scale between figure and plant. He did his utmost to convey something of the particular habits of movements of each species. Simple though they are, he infused his compositions with a sense of movement and vitality not usual prior to his work" (Norelli). Copper engraving with original hand-color. 22 x 35 cms, nice plate impression and ample margins. A very fresh impression, lovely contemporary coloring.

Miller, Henry. Tropic of Cancer.
Miller, Henry. Tropic of Cancer. Grove Press Inc. New York 1961. 8vo, 318pp, Orig. brown quarter cloth & marbled boards, no dust jacket (as issued). One of a signed limited edition, #77 of 100 copies. First legal US edition. Includes a letter from Grove Press dated March 7 1962 presenting the copy to James Pasta. A most interesting letter links the above edition to the first edition of Miller's classic. This letter, from the US Customs Service dated Oct. 22, 1935, tells Mr. Pasta that there was "(1) copy: "Tropic of Cancer" by Henry Miller." which was being temporarily held by Customs. This first edition was banned in the U.S., and Mr. Pasta was never to receive the copy that Henry had taken pains to send him. 27 years later, this Grove Press edition was sent by way of replacement. In other letters to Pasta, Miller says "I can never forget what it meant to me the day I ran into you at Borough Hall and you offered me a berth in the Park Dept. It was a sort of turning point in my life." Miller was down and out, and Pasta got him a job in the Parks Dept. Pasta describes this incident: "The next day I procured a job for him - at which he really worked - but only long enough, it turned out, to earn his passageway to Paris." The world can only wonder what would have become of Henry Miller had he not bumped into Jimmy Pasta and eventually made it to Paris.

Gaultier, J. [Antarctic & Arctic Map]. Cartes Geographiques.
Gaultier, J. [Map Puzzle for Children]. Cartes Geographiques. A beautiful set of three puzzles for children in their original box. The puzzles consist of a double hemisphere map of the eastern & western hemispheres entitled "Mappe Monde"; "Europe et ses Chemins de fer" (railways are marked; and "France et ses Chemins de fer". Mon. Logerot, J. Gaultier, editeur, Quai des Gds Augustins, 55, Paris. No date, but ca. 1850's. Lithographed maps mounted on thick card with original block color marking the different countries and seas. Each puzzle measures 9 1/2 by 11 3/4" and has 24 pieces; the map of France is complete, the map of Europe and the world both have a couple small feet missing. The box is in excellent condition and measures 10 1/4 x 12 1/4". The cover illustration is an attractive lithograph depicting a woman in classical dress showing a globe on her lap to a group of four children. There are four vignettes of natives; the pyramids & sphinx of Egypt; Eskimos ice fishing and a ship in front of an iceberg, quite possibly Dumont D'Urville's "Astrolabe" in Antarctic waters. There is no date but many clues, as with most maps. It is post 1840 because the world map shows Terre Adelie discovered by Dumont D'Urville in Jan 1840; Ross's discoveries of 1841 are marked and Melbourne is marked. However, the Queensland border established in 1860 is not marked, but Brisbane is. Lake Gairdner, Lake Eyre and Adelaide are marked in S. Australia. This, and the type of lithograph printing indicates an 1850s, early 1860s printing date. Not in Gumuchian. An unusually nice set of children's puzzles, in very good condition.

Orig. green dec. cloth, front inner hinge starting, head of spine rubbed o/w an unusually bright copy. This expedition from the telegraph line to the west coast won Warburton the distinction of being 1st to cross the continent. It was not easy going however & Warburton nearly died of starvation. He was so debilitated that much of the scientific portion of the work had to be written by others & his own journal edited by a member of the RGS. Hurley, Frank & John King Davis. Photographs of the 1929-1930 BANZARE Expedition & an Abstract of the "Discovery" meteorological log in John King Davis' hand. This small collection was most likely to have been once in the possession of either Frank Hurley or John King Davis, both of whom were intimately involved in the BANZARE expedition of 1929-30, from which this collection derives. Hurley was the photographer on this voyage - it was his third trip, having photographed first for Mawson, and later for Shackleton on his fateful "Endurance" expedition. Davis was the captain of the ship "Discovery" in 1929-30, and had previously captained Shackleton's "Nimrod" 1907-9 & Mawson's "Aurora" 1911-14. The collection includes five unsigned Hurley photographs of the ship "Discovery", 18.5 x 23.5 cms. These include the fore deck and riggings; the "Discovery" being tugged out of harbor, a front view; another of the "Discovery" in harbor, a side-rear view; a view of the forward deck & rigging; a view of three officers on deck in naval dress, one of whom appears to be Davis. The meteorological log has a label reading "Abstract of Meteorological Log --- Kept on board "Discovery" at Heard Island and Kerguelen Island between November 12th and December 3rd, 1929, and between February 8th and March 2nd 1930", with a Department of Defence stamp, Hydrographic Branch, signed and dated 30.10.3? (2nd number of year is unclear). The pages are hinged together randomly, and appear to be in Davis' handwriting. We would hazard a guess that these were log sheets released to Davis as a personal memento of the voyage.

An armchair traveller of the day, reviewing the countries of Europe, America, Africa, etc. The most interesting content occurs in the last three volumes, which cover Cook's first and second voyages. The text regarding the second voyage is one of the earliest published accounts of the voyage, as it was published in 1775. Cook had only just returned from the voyage on 31st July of that year. The publishing date coincides with the release the same year of the unofficial account published by the gunner's mate John Marra. Marra's account was written and published anonymously sometime between August and December 1775. Marra finally admitted to writing the anonymous account in December 1775, and thence started publishing extracts under his own name. No author is attributed to the account in this set. Volume 11 covers Cook's first voyage 1768-71 (48pp), Byron's voyage 1764-6 (80pp); Wallis voyage 1766-8 (50pp); Carteret 1766-9 (29pp). Volume 12 continues Cook's first voyage (216pp, 4 copperplate engravings). Volume 13 includes 62pp on the 1st voyage with a plate of a kangaroo - the 2nd voyage (pp63- 216) includes 2 engravings of icebergs and ice mountains. The inclusion of the account at the end of the last volume of the set, seems to indicate that it was included in the last instance before publication. Only two copies are recorded in RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network), at

Heustis, Daniel. Voyage to Van Diemens Land.
Heustis, Daniel. Voyage to Van Diemens Land. A letter from Daniel Heustis, one of the exiles, to his brother William, forwarded to the editor of the Jeffersonian by Mr. Skinner. Published in the newspaper The Carthagenian, Thursday June 3, 1841, Carthage N.Y. 37.5 column cms. Folio 4pp disbound, light foxing, centerfold somewhat split, contemporary folded in 4. A presentable copy. A vivid and illuminating account of the conditions borne by the "Patriot" exiles on their voyage to Van Diemens Land. Gives specific details such as passengers (141 prisoners, 300 total), dates, times, ships & ports entered including Rio, St. Paul & Amsterdam Island. The ship is listed as H.M. Buffalo, under the Captain James Wood, and the only death being Mr. Asa Priest of Auburn N.Y. The editor notes in a short preface to the letter that this letter was written on March 7th, and had lain in the London post office awaiting payment of charges. He encourages readers to make a "subscription" to the post office in Watertown (N.Y.) to ensure no other letters will be delayed. Daniel Heustis eventually returned to the U.S. and in 1847 published an account of his "adventures & sufferings" which is one of the rarer Canadian rebellion prisoner narratives, recorded as Ferguson 4536.

Duse, S.A. Unter Pinguinen und Seehunden. Erinnerungen von der SchwedischenSudpolepedition 1901-1903.
Verlag Wilhelm Baenich, Berlin: 1905. 8vo, (viii) 262pp, 80 full page plts. Orig. green cloth printed with color illustration of penguins on a rocky shoreline near the sea. The illustration is slightly rubbed, binding faintly soiled, but a nice copy overall of an extremely rare book. This Swedish Antarctic expedition under Nordenskjold, was one of three loosely co-ordinated national expeditions that resulted from the 1895 International Geographical Congress (the other two were England & Germany.) "Discovery" expedition under Scott and the German "Gauss" expedition under Drygalski). The Swedish were to explore the South Atlantic & southern South America. Unfortunately the Antarctic summer of 1902-3 was the coldest on record, and only the German expedition succeeded. The British & Swedish were forced to spend the following year in the Antarctic, but much use was made of the extended stay - for the first time, proof of the geological connections between South America and northern Graham Land was established. The ship "Antarctic" was coming to relieve the winter party, but was crushed by ice, stranding her crew in three parties who were unable to communicate with each other. Duse (the author), Anderrsson & Grunden were stranded at Hope Bay, but survived the winter, eventually trekking overland to rejoin Nordenskjold's group at Cape Well-Met. All parties on the expedition survived. Spence 406.

Mawson, Sir Douglas. The Home of the Blizzard.
Mawson, Sir Douglas. The Home of the Blizzard. Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. Heinemann, London 1915, 1st UK edition. Mawson's tale is one of the great stories of survival of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Exploring with Ninnis & Mertz in 1912, Ninnis was lost down a crevasse. With him went the 6 fittest dogs & the most indispensable supplies. Mertz & Mawson improvised, feeding the dogs worn out mitts & raw-hide straps, but eventually the weakest dogs were killed to feed them all, until all the dogs were gone. The two men reserved the dog's livers as the meat easiest to chew, unaware that liver's toxins were slowly poisoning the men as they consumed it. Mertz became delirious and died. Mawson continued, the soles of his feet separating and his toes and fingers festering. Miraculously he found a depot of food, and arrived eventually at the main depot, to see the ship departing on the horizon. He wintered over with the 6 men who had remained to continue the search. On Dec. 24, 1913 their 2 year journey was finally over. 2 vols, 349 pp & 338 pp, 224 ills., 37 ills. in text, and 3 folding maps. The primary binding in navy buckram with the title & illustration stamped in silver. A good candidate for a re-bind - light overall wear. Spence 774, Taurus 100, Rosove 217.A1, Conrad p20.
