OERKE, Andrew Black Christ and Other Poems
(The Author) (Np) (1970) First Mimeographed pages glued into hand painted boards (designed by Hal Campbell). Designated as not for sale and for private distribution. A few corrections to the text almost certainly in the hand of the author, tape stains to one page where a new stanza has been taped into the text, again presumably by the author, else a near fine copy of this fragile, homemade production. According to the acknowledgments page the author was published in many important periodicals including The New Yorker, Mademoiselle and Epoch. Oerke was assistant director of the Peace Corps in Malawi, Central Africa, 1968-1970, where he made this book and distributed it to his friends amongst the volunteers and elsewhere. It is unlikely many copies of this book have survived.

  WILLIAMS, James Imposed Rebellion
Fabian Books Fresno (1959) First First edition, a paperback original. Faint dampstain visible only at the inside edges of the paper wrappers and slight bowing to the body of the book, presumably reversible. An attractive, very good plus copy of this paperback original by a Black marine veteran of the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa at the time of publication. A poorly written and intentionally sensational novel of interracial love, the publisher apparently specializing in a brand of softcore pornography. Nonetheless an extremely uncommon book.

TALBOT, Edith Armstrong Samuel Chapman Armstrong: A Biographical Study
Doubleday Page New York 1904 First First edition. Slight rubbing to the base of the spine, a coupleof pages roughly opened and the hinges neatly repaired, still a bright, else fine copy. Biography of the White Union General who founded the Hampton Institute, by his daughter. Inscribed by Robert C. Ogden on Founder's Day, 1904. Ogden was a prominent merchant and early financial supporter of Hampton and other traditionally Black Southern schools (his help on the book is acknowledged by the author in the preface). Laid in is a touching one-page typed statement by Armstrong dated in 1890 indicating how he would like to be buried should he die suddenly and reminiscing about his life and how he would like to be remembered. Whether this is a fair copy of a published statement or the actual manuscript is impossible to tell with the evidence at hand, although a few small but meaningful (typed) corrections might indicate the latter. At any rate an interesting and attractive volume.
