First printing with "dove" instead of "dived" on p. 96, line 7, but "n" present in "one", p. 279, line 5 from the botttom, Preceded by the English edition ten days, the American edition went through five printings the first year, becoming Longfellow's best-known and most parodied poem. Based on the Finnish epic Kalevala, which the poem resembles in spirit as well as in several passages. Longfellow drew much of his information from the works of Schoocraft, Catlin, and Heckewelder.
