Meryon, Charles, French (1821-1868) Le Ministere de la Marine (The Admiralty, Paris)
Proof dedicated in pencil by Frederick Keppel; most likely an early posthumous impression as Keppelwas only 24 when Meryon died. Delteil-Wright 45; Schneiderman 94 vii/VII, the monogram that was added in state v and the publisher inscriptions added in state vii have been masked or erased. According to Schneiderman, the absence of these inscriptions may be explained as the action of Frederick Keppel: "It is probable that impressions [of state vii] were taken concurrently as false proofs of State V by masking all the inscriptions on the plate except for the monogram. The inscriptions may also have been erased. It is also believed that this practice may have been adopted when the plate was in the possession of Keppel who seems to have taken impressions on a variety of papers." (fn. 5, p.189). The print dealer and publisher Frederick Keppel (1844-1912) was one of the most important print dealers in 19th century America and contributed greatly to the success of the Etching Revival. He came to know many French artists, including Meryon, on his annual family vacation to Barbizon. He was also Whistler's primary print dealer. Keppel was a source of great support to the troubled Meryon. (Who was Who in American Art, 1999 ed. p.1827-8). Inscribed in pencil below image: "To Eugene A. Noble, / with the kind regards of Frederick Keppel." A fine impression on cream laid paper, in fine condition aside from slight overall toning; sheet measures 9 1/4 x 8 inches. 6 5/8 X 5 3/4 inches

Barnett, Herbert, American (1910-1972) Quinapoxet Bridge, Princeton, Massachusetts
Signed with estate stamp verso. From artist's sketchbook. In fine condition.Beginning with his treatment of Rockport and Pigeon Cove in the1930's, Barnett's favorite landscape subjects were almost always closed-in combinations of water, stone, woods and human habitation -- quarries, farms, bridges, mills. Near the Ball House on Ball Hill Road is Old Mill Road which crosses Cobb Brook where it empties into Quinapoxet Reservoir (then Pond). This tranquil site was subject to several upheavals. The concrete mill dam, where the artist placed his easel to take this view, had already been toppled by the 1938 hurricane. The triangular wooden superstructure of the bridge was later destroyed by Hurricane Carol. Finally, an bold farm adjacent to the bridge was dynamited for the sake of the reservoir watershed, and its bats escaped and took up residence above the artist's studio. Barnett made many oil, watercolor and charcoal studies of this bridge and its environs in the 1950's, several of which have been sold by Childs Gallery over the years. 17 3/4 X 24 inches Estate stamp verso

In fine conditon aside from minor tape residue in bottom right corner and pinholes in upper right corner.Still in the late '40's to 50's there were large chicken farms in the Princeton area, and many small farmers also kept chickens and sold eggs. The scenes of dressing hens are probably of William Brooks and his wife, who lived in the next house down Ball Hill Road from Barnett's studio. In the two drawings and the oil sketch the artist plays up the genre interest of the subject in contrast to the abstract play of intensely colored planes in "Hens in Sunlight and Shadow". 14 X 17 inches Signed in ink
