Meryon, Charles, French (1821-1868) Le Ministere de la Marine (The Admiralty, Paris)
Proof dedicated in pencil by Frederick Keppel; most likely an early posthumous impression as Keppelwas only 24 when Meryon died. Delteil-Wright 45; Schneiderman 94 vii/VII, the monogram that was added in state v and the publisher inscriptions added in state vii have been masked or erased. According to Schneiderman, the absence of these inscriptions may be explained as the action of Frederick Keppel: "It is probable that impressions [of state vii] were taken concurrently as false proofs of State V by masking all the inscriptions on the plate except for the monogram. The inscriptions may also have been erased. It is also believed that this practice may have been adopted when the plate was in the possession of Keppel who seems to have taken impressions on a variety of papers." (fn. 5, p.189). The print dealer and publisher Frederick Keppel (1844-1912) was one of the most important print dealers in 19th century America and contributed greatly to the success of the Etching Revival. He came to know many French artists, including Meryon, on his annual family vacation to Barbizon. He was also Whistler's primary print dealer. Keppel was a source of great support to the troubled Meryon. (Who was Who in American Art, 1999 ed. p.1827-8). Inscribed in pencil below image: "To Eugene A. Noble, / with the kind regards of Frederick Keppel." A fine impression on cream laid paper, in fine condition aside from slight overall toning; sheet measures 9 1/4 x 8 inches. 6 5/8 X 5 3/4 inches
