[BEWICK, THOMAS]. A New Lottery Book of Birds and Beasts for Children to Learn their Letters by as soon as they can Speak.
Newcastle W. Charnley 1771 12mo. 60 pp. Contains forty-eight charming wood engravings of birds and animals, two to a page within decorative borders, facing the letters of the alphabet in upper case, lower case, and italics. Followed by a syllabary and exercises. This extremely rare little volume is Bewick's second dated work, his first juvenile book, and the third publication known to contain his work. (The first two were "A Treatise on Mensuration" and a horn-book.) He did the cuts as a seventeen-year-old apprentice, five years before receiving the prize that launched him towards his career as an innovative and celebrated illustrator with a workshop and a following of his own. The cuts are much finer and more detailed than those of the slightly earlier "New Invented Horn Book," and, as Roscoe put it, "full of promise." They are important in the development of children's book illustration and as precursors of Bewick's "British Birds" and "Quadrupeds." A well-preserved copy, internally fine, with light rubbing and some splitting to the hinge of the original Dutch paper-covered boards, which contain colorful illustrations of flowers. Housed in a velvet-lined, cloth dropback box with leather label. (Hugo 3; Osborne II, 725; Roscoe p.1).

The tea is picked over by ladies, then measured and weighed, trampled and packed, and brought to an oven for smoking. The colors are so vivid against the medium as to make the figures appear to have dimensionality. Marginal closed tear to one painting, another marginal tear with minimal loss to image, one leaf detached, few light spots of foxing, otherwise the paintings are fine. Mounted in a red, silk-covered album which shows wear and worming, the silk partially lifted from the boards. A nice example of an extremely fragile item.

[GOREY, EDWARD]. Season's Greetings 1996 Bromer Booksellers.
Boston Bromer Booksellers 1996 Small quarto. 26 pp. From an edition of 2,000 copies, this is one of200 copies signed and numbered by Edward Gorey. Bromer special holiday catalog with previously unpublished, full-color cover design by Gorey, who created the artwork originally for a Nieman Marcus holiday catalogue. When the retailer rejected Gorey's work, choosing that of another artist instead, Bromer Booksellers happily acquired the illustration, which features frolicking bears around a wreath, set against a starry blue background. A nice example of the artist's whimsical touch. Fine.

DIDOT, HENRI. Evangile de Notre Seigneur Jesus Christ selon Saint Matthieu, d'apres la version revue par J. F. Ostervald.
Haarlem 1900 52pp. The Gospel of Matthew beautifully printed here in the famous 2 1/2 point type cut by Henri Didot at the age of sixteen. He invented a type-casting device, the polyamatype, for the purpose. It was first used to print "Maximes et Reflexions Morales" of Rochefoucauld in 1827, and a Horace in 1828, then sold to Ensched, in Haarlem. Mikrobiblion claims that the clarity and beauty of Didot's types are best displayed in this masterful volume. An extremely fine copy, with no signs of wear, in the publisher's brown cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Inscribed by Ensched,'s printer, Jan van Krimpen. (Mikrobiblion 90, Bondy p.92). The Wonder Turner, or Magical Changes.
London (ca. 1835) Set of 22 thaumatropes. Each is hand-colored, on a card 2 7/8 inches square, withstring threaded through two sides. Twirl the card on the strings, and you can see a wizard pop in and out of a bottle, Punch and Judy dinking a toast, a troup of revellers appearing in a deserted street, a rider bouncing on his horse, and many other whimsies. Apparently sold originally without string, as several different strings are used. On eight cards the string has worn through the edge with use, and been re-attached. Still, the set is in remarkably good condition for thaumatropes of this period, with a few cards lightly smudged. Housed in the original compartmented wooden box, with pictorial paste-ons (both sides of the tiger-tamer card) on the sliding lid. Extremely rare.

MOERMAN, JOHANNES. Apologi Creaturarum.
(Antwerp) G. de Jode (1584) Octavo. (iv),65,(1) ff. First edition. Illustrated with 65 engraved emblems by Marcus Gheeraerts, all of which are beautifully colored by a contemporary hand. The book was jointly published by de Jode and Christopher Plantin. De Jode, a print dealer, supplied the illustrtations and Plantin printed the text. As the engravings are not signed, it was long thought that they were by de Jode; subsequent research has shown that Gheeraerts is the artist. Each emblem is accompanied by a poem, an explanatory verse and a moral. The nature of the text leads one to believe that this emblem book was oriented to youth. Number 63 tells of youth that ridicules old age comparing the wrinkled skin of the old man to that of the rhinoceros. Some occasional soiling does not detract from the beauty and the general freshness of the illustrations. Bound in contemporary blind and black stamped vellum boards that have been recased with a new spine. Early owner's stamp and presentation inscription on front free endpaper. (Landwehr 560).
