JICHOSAI, MATSUYA. Ehon Kotozugai.
Nagoya (Kajita Kansuke), after 1805. 3 vols. in 1. 28ff., with 24 illus. (all but 1 double-page). 4to. Orange wraps., stitched as issued, with embossed designs on both covers. The first edition of the work is traditionally given as Osaka, 1805, but Hillier suggests that it may have been earlier; this later Nagoya issue combines the three volumes in one. Ehon Kotozugai (‘A Picture Book of Counterparts’) is one of Jichosai’s two masterpieces. “Jichosai was, in fact, an artist of exceptional calibre and one of the most notable figures of the Osaka cultural scene in the late eighteenth century.... His own paintings and his prints in book form combine to create an image of a man of subtle, sceptical intelligence, delightfully irreligious and nonconformist, and with an artistry that has a special tang because of his scoffing and burlesque.... The Ehon Kotozugai drawings are only superficially like true Toba-e. The figures are simply drawn, faces and limbs mere outlines and the clothes solid black, except for the white lines on black indicating the folds; but the limbs are fairly normal, and the faces more recognizably human even when they are grimacing, as they often are. The events and actions depicted are less fantastical than in Toba-e, and in many cases the humour comes from the candid portrayal of people when they are off-guard, like the singers caught as they strain, with closed eyes, at their excruciating top note, or the three nightbirds who catch sight of the long-necked snail in the beam of their lantern.... In the early years of the nineteenth century, there seems to have been a wave of searching, but not solemn, self-questioning among the literate section of the people in the Maigata especially, and the books of Shuho and Jichosai are typical of the light-hearted arraignment of the foibles and vices that was being expressed in verse and picture” (Hillier). Covers slightly worn; neat old mend to tear in first leaf.

(CALLOT, JACQUES) Peri, Giovanni Domenico. Fiesole distrutta. Di Giovanni Domenico Peri, contadino d’Arcidosso.
Firenze (Nella Stamperia di Zanobi Pignoni ), 1619. (4), 197, (3)pp. Fully etched title-page and etched frontispiece portrait of the author, both by Jacques Callot. Woodcut lettrines, culs-de-lampe. Sm. 4to. Late eighteenth-century dark blue straightgrain morocco gilt (rather rubbed). A.e.g. First edition; a second, with corrections, was published in 1621. A long epic poem in ottava rima by a farm laborer "endowed by nature with the genius of poetry" (Belloni). "To provide a book with the portrait of the author or the person to whom it was dedicated, surrounded by a rich allegorical and emblematic frame, was a Baroque custom. Callot designed several of these portraits. The most charming is that of Giovanni Domenico Peri, heading his book ‘Fiesole distrutta,’ published in 1619. Peri was a maître populaire, a Douanier Rousseau of poetry, a simple peasant from Arcidosso who, under the influence of Ariosto and Tasso, wrote verses dedicated to the Grand Duke Cosimo, his Maecenas. Callot surrounded the effigy with the implements of the author’s calling: hay-forks, rakes, shovels, baskets, a ploughshare, and two stately oxen. The hub of the wheel, cleverly devised, serves as an inkstand" (Benesch). Callot’s title-page, equally lovely and often lacking, is a composition known as "La bella giardiniera." Some light wear and light foxing throughout, the two etchings neatly reinserted, with slight loss at the top left margin of the title (not within the platemark), and slight rubbing; inscription on the verso of the title. Ex-libris Sir Thomas Brooke, the owner of the famous Pillone collection in the nineteenth century. Front flyleaf and frontispiece neatly loosened from binding.

La Fontaine [Jean de]. Fables choisies, mise en vers.
Paris (Desaint & Saillant/ Durand), 1755-1759. 4 vols. I: (2), xxx, xviii, 124pp. II: (2), ii, 135,(1)pp. III: (2), iv, 146pp. IV: (2), ii, 188pp. Frontispiece and 275 full-page plates hors texte, after Jean-Baptiste Oudry by Charles-Nicolas Cochin, engraved by Cochin himself, Aliamet, Aubert, Aveline, Baquoy, Beauvarlet, Cars, Choffard, Dupuis, Flipart, Galimard, Le Mire, Moitte, Radigues, Surugue, Tardieu, Teucher, and numerous others. Inserted in the first volume, the portrait of Oudry by Tardieu after Largillière ("found in some copies but not integral" per Gordon N. Ray). Folio. Contemporary full mottled calf, the spines gilt in 8 compartments. A large-paper copy, of which only 100 examples were printed. We quote from David Becker’s remarks in Regency to Empire on the history of the work: "Oudry began a series of drawings to illustrate the fables of La Fontaine around 1729, more than twenty-five years before their publication in this lavish four-volume set. They were executed during the artist’s leisure hours away from his duties as painter for the royal tapestry works at Beauvais. He made a total of 275 designs for the fables, all of which were engraved for the book. The original drawings are often signed and dated, ranging as late as 1734, with a frontispiece added in 1752.... It was not until 1751 when the complete set of drawings for the project was acquired by the financier Montenault that their publication was undertaken. While securing a team of no fewer than forty-two engravers, Montenault also commissioned Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils to redraw Oudry’s designs, because their technique was deemed too free and loose for the engravers to follow. Cochin drew his more precise designs in the same format as Oudry’s, and the subsequent engravings were also executed in the same size. Several of the finished engravings were exhibited in the 1753 Salon, and the first three volumes of the book were published in 1755 and 1756. A royal grant enabled the final volume to appear in 1759 after the publishers encountered financial difficulties.... The volumes were printed in a very grand format, among the largest of any illustrated book of the time save for certain royal festival books. Three different sizes and types of paper were used for the text and the plates, with two grander formats issued in one hundred copies each. Oudry’s full-page plates were embellished with borders and titles, and the flower painter Jean-Jacques Bachelier (1724-1806) was commissioned to design decorative tailpieces to fill in the spaces at the end of each fable. His ornamental, rustic designs were engraved on wood by Jean-Michel Papillon (1698-1776) and Nicolas Le Sueur (1691-1764). These decorations often serve to counterbalance the complexity of the engraved plates opposite and are sometimes allegorical in nature. In fact, P.P. Choffard issued a suite of metal-engraved copies of these tailpieces soon after their initial publication (ca. 1760)." Though much of the attention to the work throughout the centuries has naturally been focused on the imaginative brilliance of Oudry’s animal narratives, Gordon N. Ray has perceptively observed that "The appeal that La Fontaine made to Oudry was at least as much in the open-air settings of his Fables as in the doings of his animal actors. Indeed, it has been shown that Oudry led a campaign to replace conventional landscape painting with the picturesque rendering of country scenes based on direct observation. So it came about that Oudry’s best designs are often those in which the presence of animals is subordinated, sometimes, as with the frogs of fable LXV or the crayfish of fable CCXXII, presenting creatures so tiny as to be barely noticeable. In the foreground are farmyards, roads, gardens, or meadows, in the background towns, rivers, valleys and hills, these last often of fantastic configuration.... Never before had the French countryside been so comprehensively presented. Indeed, one has to go to the albums of views that marked the emergence in the latter part of the century of what Ruskin called ‘the landscape feeling’ to find anything comparable in variety and abundance.... In summary, the illustrations offer a world of their own, to which the reader may return again and again for delight and instruction. With such an embarassment of riches in the plates, it is not surprising that little attention has been paid to the varied and ingenious fleurons appearing at the end of each fable. These constitute almost the only significant series of wood engravings for the adornment of French books during the eighteenth century. In a concluding ‘Explication,’ indeed, the publisher notes that it was the difficulty of this unaccustomed process which led the artist, Bachelier, ‘to place his allegories in the genre of flowers, where one knows that he excels.’ Explanations are offered of several of the fleurons. Of that for fable LXXVI, the reader is informed: ‘A snake, symbol of prudence, hidden under the flowers, forms the tailpiece--the image of the insinuating way in which moral lessons ought to be presented.’"Exceptionally tall, this copy measures 479 x 330 mm. (18 7/8 x 13 inches), substantially larger than those at the Pierpont Morgan Library, Harvard and the National Gallery. The plate for fable CLXXII, "Le singe et le léopard" is in the second state, as is normal in the large-paper edition. Some rubbing and chipping at the extremities and hinges of the bindings, with small losses at head and feet of backstrips; intermittent unobtrusive dustiness and pale foxing; withal an excellent copy, bearing the engraved ex-libris of the Bibliothèque de Champy fils aîné in each volume.

(KAPROW) New York. The Reuben Gallery. “18 Happenings in 6 Parts. By Allan Kaprow.” October 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. [1959.] Admission by advance reservation.
[New York, 1959]. Poster, printed in orange on white stock, with a design of 18 quickly sketched ovoid shapes, of which 16 contain the title statement repeated verbatim. 17 x 16 inches. Folded twice for mailing (as issued). The poster for one of the very earliest Happenings, following on a performance piece at Douglass College at Rutgers University, and a sound event, “Intermission Piece” at the Reuben Gallery, both in 1958. “18 Happenings in Six Parts” “was the first of what generically became known--to everyone save their creators--as Happenings” (Barbara Haskell, in “Blam!”). The participants included Kaprow, Robert Whitman, Sam Francis, Alfred Leslie and George Segal. On the verso of the poster is a long text, printed in orange in a spherical paragraph at upper left: “There are three rooms for this work, each different in size and feeling. The rooms are nearly transparent. No matter where a person is, he is aware of something happening in another room.... The guests will change seats according to numbered cards. Each guest will sit once in a different room. Some guests will also act. Slides will be shown. Tape recorded sounds, produced electronically, come from loudspeakers. From these there will be heard as well a collage of voices.... Human actions will occur of different but similar kinds. In addition there will be non-human actors. There will be a dancing toy and two constructions on wheels. The same action will never happen twice. The actions will mean nothing clearly formulable so far as the artist is concerned. It is intended, however, that the whole work is to be intimate, austere, and of somewhat brief duration....” Stapled to top right of verso: postcard from the Reuben Gallery announcing the Calendar for forthcoming exhibitions: George Brecht (October 16-November 5), Lucas Samaras (November 6-26).

OTA SABURO. Asagiri [Morning Mist].
Tokyo, 1912. 2 vols. 39, 38ff. 70 full-page color prints. Orig. dec. wraps., stitched, with color prints on each cover (forming a diptych when the two volumes are aligned). Later fitted cloth case (ties with ivory clasps). We quote at length from Jack Hillier’s discussion in “The Art of the Japanese Book”:“Ota Saburo was a protégé of an artist who has been called ‘the father of oil painting in Japan’ and was one of those instrumental in introducing and fostering Impressionism. His name was Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924) and he came of patrician family. Sent to Paris in 1884 to study law, he found stronger interest in painting and joined Raphael Collin to study the plein air manner. In 1893 he returned to Japan, and soon after launched his school for inculcating western methods. Like Asai Chu, he served as a war correspondent covering the Sino-Japanese conflict. He never achieved major status as an artist himself and designed few prints, but he proved a good teacher and set many of the Taisho artists on the road to westernism. Ota Saburo was one of the most original, and is known by a few fine broadsheets that only fail to qualify as sosaku hanga in that they were not cut and printed by the artist. He also compiled a book which, under the title Asagiri, ‘Morning Mist,’ contains a series of small colour prints of astonishing invention and charm, a distinguishing feature being the front covers of the two volumes, which combine to form a diptych. Although Ota has taken two figures in dress and hairstyles of the Genroku era, the diptych is anything but a period piece, and shows Ota’s truly modern style, the kimono and a traditional theme disguising the new western approach and leading to the kind of piquant hybrid that is one of the delights of this transitional period. There is some doubt as to whether the pictures in Asagiri are entirely woodblock-printed. About this date, we have it on the authority of printers of the period, it was sometimes the practice to combine lithography with woodblock, normally lithography being used for the text and the picture outlines in sumi, and woodblocks for the colours. It is not always easy to identify instances of such mixed methods, and the colophons of books rarely specify the printing media, but it is difficult not to believe that the text and outlines in Asagiri are printed by lithography, though the colours give ample evidence, both from the impression left by the edges of some blocks, and from the marks of the printer’s baren, that they were printed from woodblocks.” A little light wear to the covers; very infrequent pale foxing; a clean and crisp, attractive copy.
