ETONIAN PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM.
A Victorian photograph album put out by Parkins & Gotto, 27 and 28 Oxford Street, London, in brown morocco (rubbed but tight and solid), with inlaid brass rules on front and rear covers, other gilt rules on covers, all edges gilt, and with a heavy brass clasp (tarnished but in working order). Internally there are 25 heavy board "leaves", hinged on leather strips, with 50 oval, gilt-ruled pockets, 42 of which bear portraits, single and group, primarily of Etonians in wide-lapelled jackets with piping, with, also, a few portraits of young women (including a woman with a fur hat and muff), and a portrait of a man with a Jack Russell terrier. Photographers include W. Runicles & Son, Windsor, Hills & Saunders, Eton, Alexander Bassano, London, Chancellor, Dublin, J. Moffot, Edinburgh, Elliott & Fry, London, and others. There is the signature of G.H. (or B.H.) Fetherstonhaugh on the front endpaper. Occasional very light spotting else very good in rubbed brown morocco.

Scattered slight foxing and browning otherwise very good in ivory cloth stamped in gilt, mildly soiled as usual. Particularly interesting is the fact that this copy was annotated and corrected (for his own use) by American writer Odell Shepard, whose signed call slip, dated 1923, at the British Library for another horticultural book is laid in. For once, underlining and notes aren't disagreeable. Shepard was a professor of English at Trinity College at the time, and possibly was on sabbatical leave. A lovely copy.

London: 1825-1851. First edition 7 7/8" x 6 1/2", "Containing Miscellaneous Information, Connected with the Cultivation of a Garden, and Natural History". Two volumes bound in one. Part I, published by Simpkin, Marshall & Co., and others, contains sections 1 - 192, (280pp),with a subject index preceding the text. Part II, published by Groombridge & Sons, contains sections 193 - 312, (144pp). also with a subject index preceding the text. All sections, which are essays on specific gardening subjects, appeared first in "Maund's Botanic Garden" from 1825 to 1851. No. 1 is "Cabbages from slips"; No. 72 is "Vegetation in glazed boxes" (i.e. Wardian cases); No. 73 is "Tobacco, cultivation of";175 is "Paeonia Moutan, to increase". Some in-text illustrations, and with the margins of some pages printed with a flower design in pale grey ink. Scattered light foxing, primarily to first few and last few leaves, armorial bookplate. Internally about very good in very heavily rubbed and dulled quarter green morocco and marbled paper on boards, marbled edges. Front hinge starting to crack, but more than presentable, and a lovely book. "Auctarium", by the way, according to the O.E.D., means "something added", such as an addition to "The Botanic Garden", which this was and is.
