Chez Augustin Courbé et Pierre Moet Paris 1658 Contemp. mottled sheep, spine gilt First edition. 195, (2) pp. 8vo. This first edition is rare and is not in the Wellcome or Waller collections. "In 1657, increasingly poor health led Digby to take the waters at Montpellier, where he gave his famous account of the 'powder of sympathy', which cured wounds by being rubbed on the weapon that inflicted them. It was a strong solution of vitriol in rainwater, which could be improved by drying in the sun and by mixture with gum tragacanth. It worked by a combination of occult and natural powers."--DSB, IV, p. 95. Probably the most famous work on the so-called "powder of sympathy." This first edition is very rare; we could locate only one copy coming to auction since 1940. It was apparently a work of considerable interest to Sir William Osler, who had seven different editions in his collection, and is the subject of an essay by him. Osler 2453. Cushing D161. Krivatsy 3241. Thorndike, VII, pp. 498-512. This first edition is rare and is not in the Wellcome or Waller collections. Joints started, but strong. Gutter of title reinforced. A very good copy.

ANGELIS, Alexander de 4to, Three zodiacal charts in the ... In Astrologos Coniectores Libri Quinque.
Horatius Cardon Leyden 1621 Later quarter vellum over patterned boards, red morocco spine label Second edition. De Angelis, head of the Jesuit college at Rome, was one of the principal foes of astrology in his time and particularly attacked Cardan and Fernel. He accepted the statement that a child weaned on goat's milk..."would leap like a goat and eat such plants as goats are wont to crop."--Thorndike, VI, pp. 202-204. Bib. (MACMICHAEL, William) The Gold-Headed Cane.
John Murray London 1827 Contemp. 3/4 morocco ovr marbled boards, five gilt-dec. raised spine bands, red speckled edges First edition. (7), (1 blank), 179, (1) pp. Woocut vignette of the cane on the title-page, and numerous wood-engravings in the text. 8vo. "A gold-headed cane was once a conspicuous part of the physician's adornment, and the particular gold-headed cane of this work was owned by Dr. John Radcliffe (1650-1714), an irascible London physician, who passed it on to a younger contemporary. The custom of passing on the cane continued through a series of five physicians, (Richard Mead, Anthony Askew, William and David Pitcairn) ending with Matthew Baillie, whose widow presented it to the Royal College of Physicians in 1823. The originally anonymous book is written as an 'autobiography' of the cane and, in a series of charming essays, tells the story-actually biographies- of its several owners. Along the way there is much information concerning the state of medicine and its practice in England during the eighteenth century."--Heirs of Hippocrates 1397. Garrison-Morton 6709. Osler 6717. (HELVETIUS, Claude-Adrien) De l'Esprit.
Chez Durand Paris 1758 Contemp. mottled calf, spine elaborately gilt with raised bands and a leather label, marbled endpapers First edition, second issue. (4), xxii, 643, (1) pp. Large engraved ornament on title, woodcut head and tailpieces. 4to. This celebrated philosophical treatise attracted immediate attention and aroused formidable opposition. The Sorbonne condemned the book, the priests persuaded the court that it was full of the most dangerous doctrines, and the author, terrified at the storm he had raised, wrote three separate retractions. Yet in spite of his protestations of orthodoxy, the book was publicly burned by the hangman. In brief, Helvetius asserted (1) that all man's faculties may be reduced to physical sensation, even memory, comparison, judgement; (2) that self-interest, founded on the love of pleasure and the fear of pain is the sole spring of judgement; (3) that all intellects are equal and that their apparent inequalities are due to the unequal desire for instruction, and this desire springs from the passions, of which all men are commonly well- organized are susceptible to the same degree. The keynote of Helvetius's thought, that public ethics has a utilitarian basis, had great influence on Bentham and Beccaria, among others. But, it was athe virulence of the attacks on the book, as much as its intrinsic merit that caused it to be widely-read and translated into almost all the languages of Europe. Jannson-Waesberge Amsterdam 1736 Modern boards First edition. (16), 184, (1) pp. Sm. 8vo. "Son of the famous Lorenz Heister, to whom his premature death must have been a grievous loss. It is a learned work for so young a man, and of special interest as dealing with the old question 'Ubi tres medici duo athei.' Section xix is an apologia for Sir Thomas Browne whose well known doubts in the Religio were sufficient to put him in the list! MAURICEAU, A. M. The Married Woman's Private Medical Companion, Embracing the Treatment ofMenstruation...Pregnancy, and How it May be Determined...Discovery toPrevent Pregnancy...
(Joseph Trow) New York 1848 Orig. cloth 238 pp. 12mo. One of the earliest and most influential American books written for the layman dealing with and promoting contraception. It went through a number of editions throughout the 1850's. In a footnote on p. 144, Mauriceau advertises condoms at $ 5 a dozen and points out their usefulness for preventing disease transmission as well as avoiding pregnancy. The text also covers a wide variety of gynecological subjects, such as miscarriage, abortion, menstrual difficulties, sterility, and childbirth. It is quite remarkable that Mauriceau also suggests, on p. 200, that there should be a cleansing of the hands and of the woman's body before manually extracting the placenta, "as the omission of it may give rise to peurperal fever", and that he is not aware that "others have practiced this method." This is a remarkably advanced view at a time when Semmelweis and others were being ridiculed for expounding similar views. Himes, pp. 262-63. Cordasco 40-0883.
