Johnson, Edward A A school history of the Negro race in America from 1619 to 1890, with ashort introduction as to the origin of the race; also a short sketch ofLiberia.

Born a slave in 1860, Johnson became a teacher and a Republican attorney in Raleigh, NC. This school text, which went through several editions up to 1911, was intended to make African American history- --first popularized by George Washington Williams in the 1880s--- accessible to school children. While "it contained little that was new and was replete with errors" (Logan and Winston, p. 349), the book is the first effort to legitimate the idea of an African American past to a generation of school children; it was adopted as a text in both North Carolina and Virginia
