Only edition of this pyramid scheme couched in the fantastic hybrid parlance of Christian messianism and populism with communist undertones - a characteristic document of early 20th-century Los Angeles, the cultic capital of so many snake oil salesmen with spiritual pretensions. Mr. Schipkowsky (in top hat and tails) appears in two photo-plates beside his elaborate symbolic charts illustrating the differences between the present order and the “millennium system”. Several pages have decorative borders suggestive of currency or stock certificates. Must be seen to be appreciated.

[WILKINSON, Lupton]. AN OXFORD THESIS ON LOVE. In Which L. Erectus Mentulus, Ph.D., late fellow of Oxford College, Draws From His Various Experiences for the Instruction, Entertainment and Greater Zest of His Collegues, Friends and Admirers.
Taos, NM [N.Y.C]: By the Hand of the Author, 1938. 4to, 122pp, rectos only, 7 full page original explicit watercolors. Blue cloth, several sheets for illus. have paste action and tears where illus. have been removed, some offsetting and glue remnants, othewise very good.
First Edition, one of only 100 copies mimeographed from the typed manuscript of the author, a Hollywood publicist and contributor to movie fanzines who bound and clandestinely distributed the copies himself. Considered to be one of the finest American erotic manuscripts ever written, it is a comic view of the “pubic war,” “a series of diverting and edifying dialogues in which it is conclusively shown that fornication is not as simple as it has frequently been considered.” In grand irony, Wilkinson, three years prior to issuing this book, was an executive with The Hays Office, the movie industry’s censorship board. Lacks the original color frontispiece by Emile Ganzo, and without the tipped-in photographs described in the Parke-Bernet Libertine Literature Auction Catalogue at number 19, nor the original wrappers. Yet copies seen by the present cataloguer have variant illustrations, and the present copy’s original watercolors (not reproductions) by an unknown hand are not without their erotic charms; clearly the artist was a trained, skilled illustrator. One of the scarcest pieces of erotica extant. Kearney Private Case p.52.

MENANT, Joachim. INSCRIPTIONS DES REVERS DE PLAQUES DU PALAIS DE KHORSABAD traduites sur le texte Assyrien.
Paris: Imprimerie Imperiale, 1865. Slim folio, 23pp. Contemp. quarter calf, worn at head, otherwisevery good.
First Edition of this rare typographic exoticum, with the cuneiform inscriptions printed letterpress along with the Latin and transliterated Assyrian; the text is translated into French in the introduction. Cuneiform was, until Rawlinson's astonishing work in 1846, the last culturally significant script to be entirely undeciphered and it was to be many more years before the four stages of cuneiform writing were all understood (cf. Diringer); thus this work is very early in the field and is a significant typographic specimen. Neither Birell and Garnett nor other standard bibliographical sources cite any example of cuneiform printing.

One of 450 numbered copies, this copy unnumbered. Designed by Christopher Sandford, a partner of the Chiswick Press, the attractive volume was bound by Messrs. Nevett, one of Britain’s oldest trade-binders, and published jointly by the Boar’s Head Press and the First Editions Club. The work, which is here translated by Oscar Wilde’s son, is a remarkable record of Nerval’s visions and the phases of his mental derangement, a record which has earned him a place as a precursor of much of the consciously hallucinatory writing of this century. The matter is so delirious and the language so lucid that Gautier characterized the work as “la Raison écrivant les mémoires de la Folie sous sa dictée.”
