Du Mortier, Nicolas [Nicolo, Nicolaus or Nicolao]. La Megalogia Del Microcosmo Overo, Il Raconto delle Grandezze del Mondo piccolo: Considerate nel Massimo tra gli huomini S. Gio. Battista. In otto Orationi...Con un' Appendice, detta il Microscopio, in cui, oltre la spiegatione di alcune etimologie greche, & ebraiche...
Padua: Agostino Candiani for the Stamperia del Seminario, 1688. Square 8vo. A-V8. [16],291,[12]pp. Contemp. limp vellum, some small pinworm holes, head of spine damaged, inner hinges opened, black marks on top and bottom edges (old owner's marks removed?), some foxing, small paper adherence on t.p. First Edition. Du Mortier (c1639-) French humanist who studied at Louvain and taught philosophy at the College du Lys. For a time he lived in Italy and entered the Camilliani. He was a student of Greek and Hebrew and the church. He was also the author of "Etymologiae Sacrae Graeco-Latinae, Seu E Graecis Fontibus Depromptae." He was an inquisititor and priest of the Camilliani, [the 'Ordine dei Chierici Regolari Ministri degli Infermi', or the 'Fathers of the Good Death.'] [see the notice in Jean Noel Paquot, Memoires...Pas-Bas,24ff.] This rare work on the microcosm and macrocosm is divided into eight sections: Ne'Corpi Sublunari, e nel Ciel della Luna, le Grandezze del nostro Massimo Microcosmo, cola Fede, si observano simboleggiate...; Ciel di Mercurio...e ferma Speranza...; Venere, lo stato angelico...la sua ardentissima Carita...; Sole, la Prudenza...sue parti fuggettive, e potentiali...; Marte, l'imperturbabile Costanza...; Giove. la Giustitia..., Saturno, l'Armonia della mirabile Temperanza; & Firmamento, tante vaghissime costellationi del Massimo tra gli huomini puri... Each sphere is discussed in religious, philosophical, astronomical, historical and philological terms. Some use is made of Greek and Hebrew types in the text. The work is apparently quite rare we could find no references to it in any of our bibliographic sources in print or on line. Nor could we find a biography of the author. It surely is a work which requires further study. Two copies found in KVK (Italy & Regensburg). Not found in RLIN, OCLC, BL 17th Italian, Bruni/Evans, Viciniana, Houzeau/Lancaster, Thorndike, Riccardi, Olschki Choix, Graesse, or Brunet.

Moffett, Thomas. [Thomas Sydenham] Christopher Bennett, ed. Healths Improvement; or, Rules Comprizing and Discovering the Nature, Method, and Manner of Preparing All Sorts of Food used in this Nation.
London: Thomas Newcomb for Samuel Thomson, 1655. 4to. A-2P4. [Lacks A1, imprimatur leaf, A3 & A4 bound out of proper order] [6 of 8 lacks imprimatur leaf],296p. Contemp. sheep, blind-ruled, sympathetically rebacked, gilt rules, title in gilt on red leather label, corners restored. THOMAS SYDENHAM'S COPY with Inscription on t.p.; number stamp on verso of t.p. with pencil note "Ruhrah Collection" minor dampstain, with darker edge stains on first leaves, some contemporary marginal annotations (longer note in bottom margin of p14.), a few marginal notes shaved. First Edition. Moffett, Moufet, or Muffet, Thomas 1553-1604, physician and author. “On leaving Cambridge Moffett went abroad. At Basle he attended the medical lectures of Felix Plater and Zwinger, and after defending publicly many medical theses there in 1578, he received the degree of M.D...Moffett, while on the continent, adopted with enthusiasm the Paracelsian system of medicine, and when he settled again in England he shared with John Hester the chief burden of upholding its principles there... In 1590 he was in attendance on Sir Francis Walsingham at Barn Elms, Surrey. Next year he was appointed physician to the forces serving in Normandy under the Earl of Essex; and on 6 Jan. 1591-2 he sent a note to the earl from Dieppe advising him to return to England. On settling again in London, Moffett appears to have spent much time at court. He came to know Sir Francis Drake, who first showed him a flying-fish, ‘milvus marinus’ (Health's Improvement, p. 245); interested himself in the eccentricities of Woolmer, ‘the foul feeder’, and was much patronised by Henry Herbert, second earl of Pembroke, and his family...Moffett combined with his interests in science real literary aptitude...Moffett's second posthumously issued book was: ‘Health's Improvement...This is a gossipy collection of maxims respecting diet, which Moffett intended to supplement by a similar work on ‘drinks’ (p. 221). It was probably compiled about 1595.” DNB 'Moffett is regarded as the first person in an English medical work to refer to the value of liver in eye disease. Liver is considered wholesome because it would "please the taste, clear the eye-sight, agree with the stomach, and encrease bloud"' (Drummond & Wilbraham, p. 153). Moffett also wrote a book on insects and it is said that his daughter, who was afraid of spiders, was the source of “Little Miss Moffett.” Thomas Sydenham, 1624-1689, English physician, "the English Hippocrates," "Intellectually, Sydenham's most striking characteristic was his independence and repudiation of all dogmatic authority in matters of science. He had indeed been trained in the school of revolt. Further, he claimed to be as little influenced by theory as by tradition. His aim was not to frame hypotheses about the operations of nature, but to observe them directly, as Bacon advised. He may be said to have set the example of studying diseases as natural objects, without being led astray by the attempt to explain them... Furthermore, he possessed the synthetic power of genius which enabled him to combine his observations into pictures of disease, the value of which remains unaffected by change of opinion or increase of knowledge." Helmont, Jan Baptista van. Walter Charleton, trans. A Ternary of Paradoxes: The Magnetick Cure of Wounds, Nativity of Tartar in Wine. Image of God in Man.
London: James Flesher for William Lee, 1650. Small 4to. A-2B4. [52],147,[1]p. Modern antique calf in two-toned Cambridge panel design with blind rules and corner fleurons, spine banded, title on red leather label, endpapers renewed, edges red; margins closely trimmed affecting some catchwords and side-notes; occ. paper toning and stains, but a very nice copy overall; institutional stamps of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland (Osler gift.) on t.p.and last leaf. Extra t.p. with etched allegorical vignette. “Second impression, more reformed, and enlarged with some Marginal Additions.” “Upon this theory of "mumia," or magnetic force, the sympathetic cure of disease was based. The weapon salve, the sympathetic ointment, and the famous powder of sympathy were the instruments through which it acted. The magnetic cure of wounds became the vogue. Van Helmont adopted these views in his famous treatise "De Magnetica Vulnerum Curatione," in which he asserted that cures were wrought through magnetic influence. How close they came to modern views of wound infection may be judged from the following: "Upon the solution of Unity in any part the ambient air . . . repleted with various evaporations or aporrhoeas of mixt bodies, especially such as are then suffering the act of putrefaction, violently invadeth the part and thereupon impresseth an exotic miasm or noxious diathesis, which disposeth the blood successively arriving at the wound, to putrefaction, by the intervention of fermentation." With his magnetic sympathy, Van Helmont expressed clearly the doctrine of immunity and the cure of disease by immune sera: "For he who has once recovered from that disease hath not only obtained a pure balsaamical blood, whereby for the future he is rendered free from any recidivation of the same evil, but also infallibly cures the same affection in his neighbour . . . and by the mysterious power of Magnetism transplants that balsaam and conserving quality into the blood of another." He was rash enough to go further and say that the cures effected by the relics of the saints were also due to the same cause--a statement which led to a great discussion with the theologians and to Van Helmont's arrest for heresy.” William Osler, The Evolution Of Modern Medicine. Piazza (1670-1745), Italian poet, achieved his most sucess with this work. It tells in poetic form the exploits of the Tuscan fleet on the coast of Barbary in September 1607. With this action the Knights of St. Stephen revenged the killing of their comrades captured by the Barbary pirates. Dantzig [Amsterdam?]: N.P., 1641. 8vo. *4,A-2O8. [8],576,[16]p. Modern calf, spine banded, title ingilt on leather label, edges speckled, minor foxing. First Edition. Moulin, Lewis du 1606-1680, nonconformist controversialist, son of Pierre du Moulin and brother of Peter du Moulin, was born at Paris on 25 Oct. 1606. He studied medicine at Leyden, taking the degree of M.D., and graduating also at Cambridge in 1634 and at Oxford in 1649. Becoming licentiate in 1640 of the London College of Physicians, he probably practised at Oxford, where in September 1648, as ‘a person of piety and learning,’ he was appointed Camden professor of ancient history in the place of Robert Waring, ejected as a royalist... Ousted in his turn at the Restoration, Du Moulin retired to Westminster. Wood calls him ‘a fiery, violent, and hot-headed independent, a cross and ill-natured man,’ but on his deathbed, in the presence of Bishop Burnet, he retracted his virulent attacks on Anglican theologians." DNB Lowndes states that the work, sometimes attributed to Du Moulin, was written by William Spang. It is entered under Du Moulin in the catalogue of the Bibl. Nat., but is not mentioned in article on Du Moulin in Dict. Nat. Biog. It is said to be based on communications sent to Spang in Holland by Robert Baillie of Glasgow.Weller says that it was actually printed in Amsterdam. STCN 164108. BN, 44:599. First Edition. "Hoyland, John 1750-1831, writer on the Gipsies, is variously designated as ‘of Sheffield, Yorkshire,’ and as ‘formerly of York.’ It was, however, in the counties of Northampton, Bedford, and Hertford that he ‘frequently had opportunity of observing the very destitute and abject condition of the Gipsy race,’ whom he began to study in the summer of 1814.He belonged to the quaker body, and although 'at some time disunited from the society was afterwards reinstated into membership.' His separation may have been due to his falling in "love with a black-eyed gipsy girl" ; but there is nothing to warrant Mr. Simson's conclusion "that the quaker married the gipsy girl." ... ‘A Historical Survey of the Customs, Habits, and Present State of the Gypsies’ (York, 8vo, 1816), has still some value, though it is mainly based on Raper's translation of Grellmann's ‘Zigeuner.’" DNB NSTC 2H34227. He entered the Collège de Navarre in 1536, and four years later was made rector of the University of Paris, even before receiving the doctorate, which was conferred on him in 1542... He was one of the theologians called to the consultation held at Mélun in 1544 in relation to the Council of Trent. In 1547, having been sent to the council itself, then transferred to Bologna, he returned to France almost immediately, as the council was again adjourned. He went to another consultation held at Orléans in 1560. At the Conference of Poissy (1561) he argued against Beza in favour of tradition, the infallibility of the Church, the Sacrament of Order, etc. " [Catholic Ency.] Our learned author brings a host of citations from ancient philosophers to more contemporary writers as Erasmus and Vives and through Jewish sources (including kabbalistic) to 'resolve' questions about the nature of the heavens in accordance to Catholic views. It must have aroused some suspicions as it was his only work to be placed on the Index of Forbidden Books. Adams E950.

The third book covers the affects of fevers and their intensity. The last book discusses various diseases including the plague and various pestilences. Hortensius (1500-1574) was a philologer, a writer of verses and a historian. He was born at Montfort in the territory of Utrecht and studied at Louvain. He was rector at Naarden "and when that city was taken in 1572, he would have fallen a sacrifice to the military fury, had he not been preserved by the gratitude of one who had been his pupil." {Chalmers] "The life of Lambert Hortensius was spared, out of regard to his learning and genius, but he hardly could thank his foes for the boon, for they struck his only son dead, and tore his heart out before his father's eyes. First Editions. Erastus, Thomas, 1524–83, Swiss Protestant theologian, a physician, whose original name was Lüber, Lieber, or Liebler. As a follower of Huldreich Zwingli, he supported the Swiss leader's view of the Lord's Supper at the conferences of Heidelberg (1560) and Maulbronn (1564) and in a book (1565). In spite of his vigorous opposition to the Calvinist doctrine, Presbyterian church discipline and government were introduced in Heidelberg in 1570. In 1574, Erastus was excommunicated by the Heidelberg consistory, but a year later the edict was removed...The term Erastianism. has come to represent approval of the dominance of civil authority in all punitive measures and, by extension, complete dominance of the state over the church, though Erastus himself never held such an extreme view. Erastianism achieved its definitive expression in the Leviathan of Thomas Hobbes. "...On his return from Italy to Germany Erastus was shocked at the extent to which men were addicted to vain predictions of astrologers and at the astrological restrictions under which medical practice labored...as an antidote to the superstition poisoning Germany he had made a translation from the Italian into German of the book of Savonarola against astrologers. This aroused some opposition among German astrologers, and the aforesaid physician of Coburg, Chrsitopher Stathmion, had contended that Savonarola's work did not apply to divination or astrology which was based on natural causes...He adopts the usual theological position that divination is the work of demons. He joins Pico and Savonarola in their wholesale onslaught upon astrology, to which he would appear to leave almost no field of activity...In the first volume of his Disputations Concerning the New Medicine of Paracelsus..Erastus has more to say against astrology. It holds first place in magic of which he utterly disapproves, and is the offscouring of all impious arts...Erastus denied the possibility of natural magic. Nor would he admit that the Magi of ancient Persia had been priests or sages. Their magic too, he regarded as diabolical. He showed himself even more incensed at Pomponnazzi for his favorable attitude toward magic in De incantationibus than at Paracelsus...He censured Paracelsus for speaking approvingly of augury, prodigies, geomancy, pyromancy, and necromancy and for condoning thae receiving from demons remedies to be employed for good ends." In its external form, Nevah Shalom is a series of homilies on various aggadic passages drwan from the talmudic tractate Berakot. Into this framework Shalom weaves a number of philosophic discussions in which he undertakes to review the philosophic statements of his predecessors, to consider just those views which are in harmony with Scripture, to decide which among them are correct, and, especially, to prove that Moses Maimonides is true and his teaching is true. Complete. 144ff=288pp. Sheep-backed marbled boards, both covers deatached; some dampstains darker at ends in lower outer corner; one leaf [17]1, replaced in a neat Ashkenazic hand of the 18th century; some passages censured as in most copies (readable trough ink) which has caused some staining on neighboring leaves and a few minor page breaks; a few old underlines, owner’s names on t.p.”Bibliotheca Colderlinae”, stamps of Jew’s College, London; good margins, paper still in good condition. T.p. in woodcut architectural surround, device of crowned bird on altar with surrounding birds on verso [1]2; large head-pieces, text woodcut circles and hexagrams First edition with this commentary. Albo's [15th c.] Sefer ha-Ikkarim is one of the representative Jewish books of his period. It reflects his troubled reaction to the wavering faith among his fellow Jews which stemmed from the discussions of religious dogma. He keenly felt the need to restore the morale of his people by offering them a reasoned presentation of Judaism and by showing that the basic teachings of the Jewish religion bore the essential charcter of 'divine law.' He brought to his task a wide knowledge of both rabbinic literature and Jewish philosophy. He was also at home in Islamic philosophy and in Latin Christian scholasticism, notably Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica. In addition, he was versed in mathematics and medicine." [E.J] Joseph Albo’s philosophical exposition proceeds from the view that every religion is founded on three principles: the existence of God, Revelation, and reward and punishment.True faith, according to Albo, is that which recognizes not only the roots of these three fundamenta principles, but also their logical consequences. The goal of man lies in perfecting himself, and the way of human perfection according to Albo, lies in striving to become similar to the supreme symbol of perfection --God. This can be achieved by doing good and right out of love for God through the loving fulfillment of His will and commandments.[See: Zinberg, III, 233-9) Because of his criticisms of Chrsitian beliefs in [Book III, ch xxv & xxvi], Albo’s work is often found censored and the Jewish Encyclopedia notes that a certain laziness on the part of the censors frequently caused them to remove whole pages from the Italian editions. Saadiah was born in Egypt, and lived for a time in Tiberias, after which he was appointed by the exilarch [head of the Jewish community in Babylon], David Ben Zakkai, to be the head of the college at Sura in Babylon, hence the title, Saadiah Gaon. But Saadiah’s fame rests on his philosophical work, Emunot De-ot (Beliefs and Opinions), written in Arabic and translated into Hebrew by Judah Ibn Tibbon. This work is the first systematic Jewish theology. It has a special significance as a philosophical defense of rabbinic Judaism by the leading representative of that Judaism of his day. The “beliefs” in the title are the postulates of the Jewish religion, while “opinions” are the truths arrived at by empirical investigation and rational reflection. Saadiah takes issue with those who see philosophy as harmful to faith. On the contrary, faith is strengthened when supported by reason. Influenced strongly by the thought of Arabic thinkers who sought in similar fashion to reconcile Islam with philosophical inquiry, Saadiah holds that there are two ways to religious truth, reason and revelation (of the Torah, for Saadiah). Both ways are essential: reason because without it superstitious ideas will proliferate; revelation because not everyone can arrive at the truth by speculation…" [Louis Jacobs: Saadiah Gaon: An introduction to the life and work of a medieval spiritual leader. ] Vinograd, Amsterdam,143 (JNUL copy incomplete). He desires a more original, a deeper, a truer meaning to be found in the old hieroglyphics and stories of these gods and daemons....These old allegories, stories, and adventures of the gods may be properly understood as referring to scientific, philosophic, and chemical ecrets; their labours and researches into the powers of Nature, and even their wars and quarrels, may have reference to the labours, the strifes, and the convulsions in Nature, and natural substance, for the evolution of new births...Under all these old stories and hieroglyphics an arcane, hidden meaning lies.” [J.B.Craven, Count Michael Maier, 1910.] There has been some discussion of the actual place of printing of Maier’s work. It is listed in the Stationer’s Register in 1613 as being printed by Thomnas Creede of London and thus the STC and RLIN list it as an English book. Other traditions have it being printed at Oppenheim and it is listed as a German publication in the VD17. There are two issues of the book. One with a dated t.p. London: Alice Warren, 1662. Folio. A-2H4. [8],424,[2]p. Modern antique paneled calf, spine banded, title in gilt on red morocco label, opening leaves frayed at margin, bookplate of Charles Bertie of Uffington on verso of t.p., occ. foxing and minor stains, last text leaf archivally remargined, index leaf repaired with loss of botton 1/4 of page with text loss. T.p. in red and black, 11 double-page or folding maps and plans (some by Wenceslaus Hollar), Mapp of Sedmorre incomplete at edges, some minor edge tears. First Edition. " In 1662 appeared Dugdale's History of Imbanking and Drayning of divers Fenns and Marshes ... a work conspicuous for its prolixity as well as for its exhibition of research. It was written at the instance of Lord Gorges, surveyor-general of the great level of the fens, of which it contains a history and minute topographical description, illustrated by maps and plans, and preceded by a vast mass of matter very little relevant to that undertaking. Five hundred copies of it having been destroyed in the fire of London (see Dugdale's letter of 15 Oct. 1666, printed in the catalogue of the Grenville Library, Brit. Mus., pt. i. p. 215), the volume became so scarce that a copy of it fetched ten guineas when in 1772 it was reissued." DNB "The History of Imbanking and Drayning of divers Fenns and Marshes (1662), which was undertaken at the request of Lord Gorges, surveyor-general of the Bedford level, suggests a subject somewhat outside the scope of Dugdale’s activities; but his wide acquaintance with manuscript sources and the contents of state archives, aided by a journey through the district in 1657, enabled him to compose a treatise abounding in historical and antiquarian interest. He takes leave to interpret the limits of his subject very widely, and is quite aware of the irrelevancy of his digressions. The isle of Ely gives an opening for narrating at large the life of Saint Audrey (translated from a Cottonian manuscript), and then follows the whole story of the feats of Hereward in defence of the isle against William the conqueror and his knights. It is in this unexpected quarter that the accomplished antiquary reveals himself as an entertaining story-teller."[Cambridge Hist. of Eng. Lit.] Wing D2481.ESTC r275. Pennington, Hollar, 672-8.

First Edition thus. Philip Melancthon (1497-1560) first came under the spell of Martin Luther when he himself was professor of Greek at Wittenberg. He became Luther's right hand man, bringing the humanistic elements into the Reform movement, and as such was present at several significant disputations, including those at Leipzig, Spier, and Marburg, and for a brief time led the Reformation "party" while Luther was in hiding at Wartburg. As a Reformer, Melancthon was known for his moderation, conscientiousness, caution, and love of peace, the last of which caused him at times to make concessions to the Catholics (e.g., Erasmus) and Calvinists to the detriment of the Lutheran position. He was the author of the Augsburg Confession and a prolific writer, Reformer and scholar in his own right. Melanchthon finished his "Theological Common-Places or Ground-Thoughts (Loci Communes or Loci Theologici), in April, 1521, and sent the proof-sheets to Luther on the Wartburg. They appeared for the first time before the Close of that year. This book marks an epoch in the history of theology. It grew out of exegetical lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, the Magna Charta of the evangelical system. It is an exposition of the leading doctrines of sin and grace, repentance and salvation. It is clear, fresh, thoroughly biblical, and practical. Its main object is to show that man cannot be saved by works of the law or by his own merits, but only by the free grace of God in Christ as revealed in the gospel. It presents the living soul of divinity, in striking contrast to the dry bones of degenerate scholasticism with its endless theses, antitheses, definitions, divisions, and subdivisions...Under his improving hand, the Loci assumed in subsequent editions the proportions of a full, mature, and well-proportioned system, stated in calm, clear, dignified language, freed from polemics against the Sorbonne and contemptuous flings at the schoolmen and Fathers. He embraced in twenty-four chapters all the usual topics from God and the creation to the resurrection of the body, with a concluding chapter on Christian liberty. He approached the scholastic method, and even ventured, in opposition to the Anti-Trinitarians, on a new speculative proof of the Holy Trinity from psychological analogies. He never forsakes the scriptural basis, but occasionally quotes also the Fathers to show their supposed or real agreement with evangelical doctrines." [Schaff] This is one of the last editions to come from Melancthon's own hand and contains his "Disputatio de Conjugio" which was cited by Milton in his arguments about multiple marriage. VD 16 M2815. "Camden...undertook the systematic preparation of the ‘Britannia.’ For this work Camden's labours were enormous. Among other things, he tells us that he had to get some knowledge of the Welsh and Anglo-Saxon languages, to read and read again both native and other historians, many of whose works still remained in manuscript, and to ransack and select from the public records; and to all this, be it remembered, was added the ‘laboriosissimum munus’ of teaching. After ten years' toil the ‘Britannia’ was completed, and appeared with a dedication to Lord-treasurer Burghley, dated 2 May 1586, the day on which Camden completed his thirty-fifth year. Its success was great; nothing of the kind had been attempted since the days of Leland, and by him only in briefer outline. In the space of four years it passed through three London editions, besides a reprint at Frankfort in 1590; a fourth edition came out in 1594. All these editions had the supervision of the author, and the last was more fully illustrated with genealogical matter. The present offering is a guidebook to Britain with each county described in regard to its archaeology, history, and geography. First Edition Ihling (d.1838) rector of the gymnasium in Meiningen, doctor of philosophy, and teacher of Latin & minerology in Jena. This is his response to Johann Karl Wotzel's (Wetzel), (1765-) work on apparitions -- "Meiner Gattin wirkliche Erscheinung nach ihrem Tode: eine wahre, unlangst erfolge Geschicte, fur jedermann zur Beherzigung, und vorzuglich fur Psychologen zur unpartheyischen und sorgfaltigen Prufung darstellt.: Cheminitz,1804. This controversal work elicited may responses. (See: Goedeke VI, pp559-560).All are apparently quite scarce. Wotzel's wife had died and he wrote his work sugesting a personal immortality and survival of the individual's spirit with all its memories intact. Probably the most famous answer to Wotzel was Christoph Weiland's "Euthenasia" in which he ridicules the notion of the survival of the individual soul with all memories of the living body. Gemisti Pletonis De Rebus Peloponnes. Orationes Duae; Acessit & alter eiusdem Plethonis libellus Graecus De virtutibus.
Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1575. Folio. *6,A-Q6, R8, S-T6, V4.[Lacks V4 blank] [12],236,[1],[1]pp. Modern paneled antique calf, spine banded, title on red leather label; long tear on *4 archivallly repaired, long burn hole on H1 with loss of most of Greek text but just a few Latin letters touched, occ. light dampstains t.p. soiled.Good margins. Large Plantin device on t.p. Editio Princeps. Stobaeus, Joannis, so called from his native place Stobi in Macedonia, the compiler of a valuable series of extracts from Greek authors. Of his life nothing is known, but he probably belongs to the latter half of the 5th century AD. From his silence in regard to Christian authors, it is inferred that he was not a Christian. The extracts were intended by Stobaeus for his son Septimius, and were preceded by a letter briefly explaining the purpose of the work and giving a summary of the contents. From this summary (preserved in Photius's Bibliotheca) we learn that Stohacus divided his work into four books and two volumes. In most of our MSS. the work is divided into three books, of which the first and second are...(Physical and Moral Extracts), and the third (Florilegiuni or Sermones)... The modern arrangement is somewhat arbitrary and there are several marked discrepancies between it and the account given by Photius. The introduction to the whole work, treating of the value of philosophy and of philosophical sects, is lost, with the exception of the concluding portion; the second book is little more than a fragment, and the third and fourth have been amalgamated by altering the original sections. From these and other indications it seems probable that what we have is only an epitome of the original work, made by an anonymous Byzantine writer of much later date. The didactic aim of Stobaeuss work is apparent throughout. The first book teaches physics in the wide sense which the Greeks assigned to this term by means of extracts. It is often untrustworthy: Stobaeus betrays a tendency to confound the dogmas of the early Ionic philosophers, and he occasionally mixes up Platonism with Pythagoreanism. For part of this book and much of book ii. he depended on the works of Atius, a peripatetic philosopher, and Didymus. The third and fourth books, like the larger part of the second, treat of ethics; the third, of virtues and vices, in pairs; the fourth, of more general ethical and political subjects, frequently citing extracts to illustrate the pros and cons of a question in two successive chapters. In all, Stobaeus quotes more than five hundred writers, generally beginning with the poets, and then proceeding to the historians, orators, philosophers and physicians. It is to him that we owe many of our most important fragments of the dramatists, particularly of Euripides." [EB 1th ed.] The Hermetic Korè Kosmou ('The virgin of the world'), a long Hermetic fragment is preserved in this collection of extracts. Gemistus Pletho [or Plethon], Georgius(c. 1351450), Greek Platonic philosopher and scholar, one of the chief pioneers of the revival of learning in Western Europe, wasa Byzantine by birth who settled at Mistra in the Peloponnese, the site of ancient Sparta. He changed his name from Gemistus to the equivalent Pletho ( the full ), perhaps owing to the similarity of sound between that name andthat of his master Plato. He invented a religious system founded on the speculative mysticism of the Neoplatonists, and founded a sect, the members of which believed that the newcreed would supersede all existing forms of belief. But he is chiefly memorable for having introduced Plato to the Western world. This took place upon his visit to Florence in 1439, as one of the deputies from Constantinople on occasion of the general council. Cardinal Bessarion became his disciple; he produced a great impression upon Cosimo de Medici; and though not himself making any very important contribution to the study of Plato, he effectually shook the exclusive domination which Aristotle had exercised over European thought for eight centuries. He promoted the union of the Greek and Latin Churches as far as possible, but his efforts in this direction bore no permanent fruit. He probably died before the capture of Constantinople. The most important of his published works are treatises on the distinction between Plato and Aristotle as philosophers (published at Venice in 1540); on the religion of Zoroaster (Paris, 1538); on the condition of the Peloponnese; and the Nuot . In addition to these he compiled several volumes of excerpts from ancient authors, and wrote a number of works on geography, music and other subjects, many of which still exist in MS." [Diocese of St. Polten-- Corpus Cristi Liturgy] Sancta Quatuor Evangelia In Processione Festi Corporis Christi Decantanda Unacum Versiculis, Orationibus Et Benedictionibus Juxta Rituale Dioceseos Ad S. Hippolytum.
Vienna: Joannis Thomas De Trattnern, 1802. Large Folio. 360 x 245mm. [a]2,b-d2. 15,[1]pp. Contemp.mottled calf, gilt rules on edges , spine banded, gilt.; paste-paper endpapers in red, blue and white, silk place-marker, minor foxing and finger-soiling. Full-page engraving of the Crucifixtion, vignette on t.p., printed in red and black inks through-out; music staves, elaborate tail-piece (with Masonic eye!). The procession for the celebration of Corpus Cristi is one of the most important in Catholic countries and it attended with great celebrations. St Polten (Hippolytus) was the site by the end of the eighteenth century of the seat of the Austian bishop. "The first lodge of Freemasons, "Zu den drei Kanonen", was formed at Vienna in 1742; a lodge called "Zu den gekrönten Sternen und zur Redlichkeit" was formed soon after at Prague. Joseph II, however, had no alliance with Freemasons. "I know little about their secrets", he said, "as I never had the curiosity to take part in their mummeries". Still, his words, "The Freemason societies increase and are now to be found in the smallest cities", show the rapid growth of the order. Although many of the representatives of the Church failed to meet the new tendencies with force and courage, the Prince-Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Migazzi, attacked them boldly. He wrote vigorously and defended the Church with energy. He was well supported by the Primate of Hungary, Count Joseph Batthyányi, and in the lower provinces by the Cardinal Count von Frankenberg. But their efforts were in vain; the movement continued to grow." [Catholic Encyclopedia} Seemann 4487.

"Francisco Suárez, Doctor Eximius, a pious and eminent theologian, as Paul V called him, born at Granada, 5 January, 1548; died at Lisbon, 25 September, 1617. He entered the Society of Jesus at Salamanca, 16 June, 1564; in that city he studied philosophy and theology from 1565 to 1570, and was ordained in 1572. He taught philosophy at Avila and at Segovia (1571), and later, theology at Avila and Segovia (1575), Valladolid (1576), Rome (1580-85); Alcalá (1585-92), Salamanca (1592-97), and Coimbra (1597-1616). All his biographers say that he was an excellent religious, practicing mortification, laborious, modest, and given to prayer. He enjoyed such fame for wisdom that Gregory XIII attended his first lecture in Rome; Paul V invited him to refute the errors of King James of England, and wished to retain him near his person, to profit by his knowledge; Philip II sent him to the University of Coimbra to give prestige to that institution, and when Suárez visited the University of Barcelona, the doctors of the university went out to meet him, with the insignia of their faculties. His writings are characterized by depth, penetration and clearness of expression, and they bear witness to their author's exceptional knowledge of the Fathers, and of heretical as well as of ecclesiastical writers. Bossuet said that the writings of Suárez contained the whole of Scholastic philosophy; Werner (Franz Suárez, p. 90) affirms that if Suárez be not the first theologian of his age, he is, beyond all doubt, among the first; Grotius (Ep. 154, J. Cordesio) recognizes in him one of the greatest of theologians and a profound philosopher, and Mackintosh considers him one of the founders of international law. " [Catholic Ency.] His work on magic, simony, and cults was first published in 1608 in Madid. The Second book is devoted to "Superstitione" on occult beliefs, magic, witchcraft, demons, and punishment for such practices. Prudentius Clemens, Aurelius. Johann Sichard ed. Psychomachia, Cathemerion, Peristephanon, Apotheosis. Hamartigenia. Contra Symmachum, praefectu(m)urbis, libri duo. Enchiridion Novi & Veteris testamenti. In calce adiecta sunt aliquot scholia, per Ioannem Sichardum.
Basle: Andreas Cratander, 1527. 8vo. A-2F8,2G4. [16],454,[2]p. Contemp. limp vellum, lacks ties, soiled and wrinkled, spine has some breaks and slight loss; large margins, occ. stains in margins, printer’s name at end censored; large margins. Printer’s device [Fortuna] on verso of last leaf, historiated initials. First Edition with Sichard’s commentary. "A Christian poet, born in the Tarraconensis, Northern Spain, 348; died probably in Spain, after 405...He practised law with some success, and in later life deplored the zeal he had devoted to his profession. He was twice provincial governor, perhaps in his native country, before the emperor summoned him to court. Towards the end of his life Prudentius renounced the vanities of the world to practise a rigorous asceticism, fasting until evening and abstaining entirely from animal food...The two principal didactic poems are the "Apotheosis", on the dogma of the Trinity, and the "Hamartigenia", on the origin of sin. One is somewhat astonished to find Prudentius attacking ancient heresies, such as those of Sabellius and Marcian, and having nothing to say on Arianism. It is due to the fact that he closely follows and imitates Tertullian, whose rugged genius resembles his own. These poems are interesting examples of passionate, glowing abstractions, precise exposition being combined with poetic fantasy. ..Orthodoxy is his great preoccupation in these poems, and he invokes all kinds of punishments on heresy... The "Psychomachia "is the model of a style destined to be lovingly cultivated in the Middle Ages, i. e., allegorical poetry, of which before Prudentius only the merest traces are found (in such authors as Apuleius, Tertullian, and Claudian)...A genius more powerful than pliant, Prudentius displays a more versatile and richer talent than that of his pagan contemporary, Claudian. The rhetoric he disparages, he himself misuses; he often exaggerates, but is never commonplace. The superior of many pagan poets, among the Christian he is the greatest and the most truly poetic." In 1541, King François I named him to the Parliament of Paris, and it is in this city that Tiraqueau dies, in 1558. Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374) Italian scholar and poet, often considered the "first humanist".He was widely traveled and became the first great Alpinist. His famous series of poems to Laura, the Canzoniere, are still considered some of the greatest poems ever written. "Not only did this culture hero gain an ardent welcome or these ideas and practices (antiquarianism, study of elegant Latin, study of Greek, etc.), but he shaped them into a single movement that came to dominate the culture of the age: to have established the vogue and ideology of classical antiquity and humanistic studies was Petrarch's most significant achievement. In this sense he was 'the founder of the Renaissance." Wedeck & Schweitzer, Dictionary of the Renaissance. Born in the Tuscan city of Lucca, Vellutello was active in Venice during the early part of the century. Vellutello first made a name for himself by publishing a commentary on Petrarch in 1525 and an edition of Virgil's works in 1533. By the time he turned to Dante, the Petrarch commentary had been twice reprinted and was well on its way to becoming one of the great editorial successes of the period. “Alessandro Vellutello...considered the whole of the Canzoniere as a single poem whose exordium was contained in the first sonnet, its narration in the sonnets and other poems following, its conclusion (in the form of a prayer) in the final canzone.” [Dict. of the History of Ideas.] EDIT 16 CNCE 32899 (5 only).
