CHINESE MEDICINE DOLL. NUDE FEMALE DIAGOSTIC FIGURENE CALLED THE "DOCTOR'S LADY" OR"MEDICINE DOLL," A RECLINING FEMALE FIGURE.
MEDICAL INSTRUMENT FOR DIAGNOSIS OF HIGH CLASS CHINESE WOMEN [China n.d. ca 19th century ?]. A carved nude Chinese woman material unknown, possibly ivory or bone, 6.5 cm. long, ca. 1.5 cm at the widest, very nicely executed, no flaws, artist has signed this work on the bottom of her left foot. OBSCURE A hand-carved figurine of unknown whitish material. Elegant Chinese women have used this kind of "doll" to indicate a place of pain or malady to physicians who always men. The woman was placed under a sheet or material and then the doctor would palpatate her pulse. The doctor was neither al- lowed to view nor touch her skin or body. Often these women were fully clothed while the doctor did his pulse observat- ions. There are ample and diverse references on this object. A good start would be with some general references: Harmut Walravens: CATALOGUE OF CHINESE BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS IN THE LIBRARY OF THE WELLCOME INSTITUTE FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICI- NE. Heinrich Wallnofer et al: CHINESE FOLK MEDICINE. William Morse: CHINESE MEDICINE. Ilza Veith: THE YELLOW EMPEROR'S CLASSIC OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. Jurgen Thorwald: SCIENCE AND SECRETS OF EARLY MEDICINE: Egypt, Mesoopotamia, India, China Mexico & Peru. There is a lovely color photo after p.236. showing a nude woman "Medicine Doll." We quote from that caption: "Ivory or alabaster figurines of this type used to be standard items in households of the higher classes in China. Since strict Chinese custom forbade a woman of stat- station to undress in the doctor's presence, or to all him to examine her body, the sick lady of the house would use the model to point out to the doctor the site of her mal ady." P. Huang et al: CHINESE MEDICINE. E. Hume: THE CHINESE WAY IN MEDICINE. W. Lessa: CHINESE BODY DIVINATION: It's Forms, Affinities, and Functions. P. Ho: A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHINESE MEDICINE AND ITS INFLUENCES. Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and Libarary: CHINESE MEDICINE: An Exhibition Illustrationg the Traditinal System of Medicine of the Chin- ese People. See illustrations: 21, 25, 27 & 44; other female figures cited in this book: 24-36. Also see the text on p.4. J. Needham et al. SCIENCE AND CIVILISATION IN CHINA, vol. 6: Medicine provides a wealth of useful background information. The figurine is contained in a cotton calico-covered box with clasp. A fine example for any medical library or colle- ction.   [ESTEL, A.A.] A PHOTOGAPH OF A MISSIONARY AND HIS FAMILY WITH HIS CHINESE CONGREGATION. Chinese Title: Fong-Tian Shen Chen Giao Hui Huan Song Father Estel Gi Shi-mu [wife] Fu Beijing Chuan TeeTong Ren Gi Nian Tso Yin. Farewell of Father Estel & His...
PEKING MISSIONARY MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPH China n.d. ca 1951-20. A large sepia-tone photograph, very good, minor marginal faint stain, 27.5 x 20 cm., mounted on a stiff board 39 x 32 cm. edges and corner of board worn, the photo is in quite good condition. OBSCURE ITEM Subtitle continued: "...Picture Taken With All Colleagues in Beijing in State Town of Fong Tian." A lovely memorial photo to record the people that Reverent and Mrs. Estel shared their time with while doing missionary work in Peking the area. The upper left corner is over exposed and dark in the negative, not a defect in the photograph. The balance of the photograph is extremely good, with very sharp strong image, no fading. It shows Rev. and Mrs. Estel, with their small daughter sitting in between them, with a small dog behind the Reverend's feet. They are surrounded by a group of some twenty-eight Chinese all are posing before a Western-style building made from bricks [the mission ?] On th e verso is the English inscription in pen which reads: "To Pastor and Mrs. A. A. Estel From all of us" it lists the names of some thirteen members in English and again in Chinese. The red seal of the photographer and his studio in the lower right corner [it was bent and broken off but mended] it reads: "Brother [Studio,] Fung-Tian [city, Peking], Northern Market" with an elaborate letter "B" in the center, the whole seal was designed as a Chinese lantern. We surmise that this is may be the photograph to commemmorate the dep- arture of Rev. Estel and his family from China, taken with their "adopoted" Chinese congregation.   GERMANS IN PEKING DURING THE BOXER REBELLION. PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF THE GERMANS IN PEKING DURING THE BOXERREBELLION 1900-1901. Erinnerungen an Unsere Expedition Nach China.
ORIGINAL GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM FROM THE BOXER REBELLION China n.d. ca. 1900-1901. 3/4 Gilt-stamped leather over buff cloth, very good, 25 x 29 cm., 30p., 26p. with photos, 2 per side = total of 104 photographs,16 x 11 cm., all very clean, albumen type, bit of fading, but clear, strong images. RARE! This is a wonderful and quite rare album. It shows the German contingent sent to China to join in the defense of foreign embassies in Peking during the 1900 uprising of the siege of the Boxers. The work begins with the group aboard the S.S. Strassburg from Bremen, and their landing in the German colony of Tsingtao, Tsingtau. From there, it was a long trek down to Peking in the snowy winter. Classic photos posed for the camera & history [4 in all]. Arrival in China with more classic poses of the German troops before Chinese sights and in a temple where they were stationed. One shows large wooden cases of their supplies stacked up in the temple garden with the commanders posing for a lovely memor- ial photos. Well taken photographs by the group's photograp- hic officer, nicely composed and carefully taken, these are NOT tourist snap shots ! These average two photos per page. * A group of German military men pose before a wide variety of Chinese pagodas and sights, some in long capes, spiked helmets, with Chinese officials ! Their arrival in Peking during a heavy snowfall in 1900 is documented by a series of superb & rare photographs from the Summer Palace where the lake is frozen ! Magnificent but frozen Peking sights, architectural views, palaces, Germans on the move with horse and carts through the snow as they deployment on orders to defend the foreign legations. Inside a legation taking lunch [tiffin]; outside two or three Chinese Boxers were executed hands bound they lay face down in the snow. More photos of travel along the way, wonderful Chinese scenery & buildings, architecture, snowed in barracks, their visit to the Great Wall in the dead of winter with snow sprinkled all over, a passage through Chinese villages and towns with long columns of German troops. One comic and lovely image of a German dressed in Chinese clothes, another in a Chinese garden. A German celebration, Chinese and German open-air trial where the accused Chinese are on their knees before a magistrate, Germans playing badminton, leisure time in a garden, soldiers packing medical supplies on horses, and German headquarters &c. * PEKING: A lovely series of photos showing the great sites of Peking and the Imperial Palace, large battalion of German soldiers on parade, another shows them marching to a great hall, destruction of Chinese buildings, superb views of fine Chinese architecture, lakes, bridges, bas-reliefs, the Great Buddha with soldiers taking a memorial snap shot. A fascina- ting photo of "Coal Hill" and stunning panoramic bird's eye view of the Forbidden City. Interiors of the Forbidden city, Temple of Heaven, Emperor's throne, the great walled city, Germans guarding Chinese buildings, Japanese Embassy, Chine- ese gates and walls showing Chinese children saluting a German officer. Magnificent temples and Fu-dogs, Germans playing tourists taking commemorative photos before many great sights. Fascinating photographs of ordinary Chinese who mug for the German camera with a German officer standing in the background, pagodas, Chinese officials, and photos of the German cemetery with tribute paid to fallen comrades. Huge temple guardians, stone bride & others. * A final pair of photos grace the last page the upper shows a large contingent of Germans on parade as they are reviewed by their officers on horse-back, the lower shows them aboard a train, in preparations for departure back to Germany, thus ending the album. The remaining five pages are blank. * This album is an excellent example of the German contingent in China during the historic Boxer Rebellion [1900-1901]. It is also a primary record of what they did, where they went, acting as tourists during free moments. Recording photos of the great and small wonders in China, the people and their exotic culture. * This excellent album is in remarkable condition, with tissue guards over each page intact, all are photos neatly laid down and centered, their condition is flawless. While the images have some degree of fading, they are nevertheless still clear and sharp photographs taken by an officer with an excellent Leila [German ?] camera. This bright officer had the great foresight to record this great adventure showing himself and his comrades-in-arms on their sojourn through China to Peking. We thank him for leaving this superb album for posterity. * Color scans can be sent by email.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !! An obscure work for distribution to the American sail- ors plying China & Yellow seas. R A R E This journal boasts "The largest circulation on the Pacific Ocean." Issued weekly, this outlined the activities of the Asiatic fleet, its activities, leisure, ports of call, with Chinese history, proverbs, guides &c. Issued under the ausp- ices of the Huron, Flag Ship for Admiral Albert Gleaves, Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Asiataic Fleet. This issue cites visits of the Huron to Foochow, Keelung-Taiwan-Formosa and on to Amoy, Swatow, enroute to Hong Kong. Great photos of the ship's crew in Peking visiting the Summer Palace, while the crew climbs on the ceremonial incense burners to pose for the camera ! They also stand on top of the large stone Lion-dogs, for mug shots ! Then the Admiral offered a few words to the sailors about on shore leave: "...As we behave so he judges America...let us be true representatives of our nation and the flag under which we sail..." The U.S. crew vs. the Japanese base ball teams in Dairen, Manchuria, YMCA farewell banquets...The issue ends with a lovely advert for Sullivan's Fine Candies" on Nanking Road, Shanghai, the fashionable area, with a charming Chinese girl supporting her head with her hands under her chin, as she sips a cold drink. They advertise American candy but any sailor will tell you they sell girls ! Thats what the farewell party was all about...saying "Good bye" to the Chinese girls as the ship rotates out of the Shanghai area. Ship-board newspapers or magazines are rare and seldom survived. This kind of eph- emera is a fascinating insight to the fleet and sailor's activities through the Asian port cities [aka "sin city." Shanghai and Hong Kong were two of the biggest on the China seas. Each page has about 6 small images per page, and other pages have a combination of one large with about 3 smaller sized photos, [22 pages] with photos, balance are blanks. A famous photograph is found on page [15], showing four Japanese men pushing a cart ladened with several bails of rice. This is illustrated in to common reference books: Hugh Cortazzi et al: JAPAN CAUGHT IN TIME, photograph 27, attributed to Von Stillfried, in a color version. It is also illustrated in ONCE UPON A TIME, page 79 again in color, but this time with the number 563 in lower right corner, attributed to Felice Beato. Beato had been an early Yokohama photographer in Japan from 1869-1877. The great fire of 1866 had destroyed a large number of his negatives, so he spent a year working diligently to replace all he had lost. Exhausted by 1868, he began to look for other business; in 1877, he sold his stock and archives to Von Stillfried. Therefore this collection has that distinct look of Beato's works, with some likely Von Stillfried added images. The images were available for purchase by foreigners who visited Yokohama and bought some memorial photos, most of which were put into handsome lacqu- er albums. A few other foreigners who had less money to spend just bought selected photos and put them in their own albums, ergo what we have here. Old pen captions read: A memorial of a visit to Yokohama, and a tour of Japan. Entra- nce to a temple; Burial ground; Views of sacred mountain [Mt. Fuji] 9 photos; Street scent in native town; Yokohama; In the rice fields; Silk weaving room; Picking tea leaves; Views of Yokohama; School for Japanese children; Seminary for young ladies [actually a house of prostitution!]. In the interior [native street scenes]; View of Yokio [sic for Tokio]; Railway terminal; the river; Views of Yokohama:rail- way station; gentleman's house. Nagasaki: Town of Nagasaki; seaport town; in the mountains; town hall of Yokohama; Rail- way between Yokohama &c; Then the captions end. Other photos show Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni; waterfalls, leisure boats with Geisha, Kyoto pagoda; Photos of Japanese girls in elab- orate Kimono costume; A street scene with rickshaw pullers before a great merchant's business [dye shop]. More Japanese women, one in a Western dress, others in Kimono; view of a Japanese temple; Japanese coolies being served wine by two women; Women in winter Kimono and scarf; View of Yokohama city and bay from the bluff; women musicans, rickshaw puller and children; girl having her coiffeur done; Various sellers with "yoke" type carriers on their shoulder; one carries load on her head; girls with umbrella; male coiffeur, basket sellers. The great bronze Buddha at Kamakura, temple scenes, Japanse women with dolls; mother and baby; then the very famous photo of pullers of rice bails; children musicians play Shamisen, another plays the Koto. Waterfalls [Nikko], girls sleeping under Futon; Street with many rickshaws before the theatre. Children entertainers and acrobats, girls playing string games; others drink tea; another group of three sing, others play the Shamisen, another musical group play the Tsutsumi drum,Shamisen, and flute. A child studying by oil lamp. Views of Yokohama harbour and the bay with a large number of grand sized Kuro-fune or "Black ships" which were the earliest of sailing vessels to visit Japan. Most have three large sail masts. Antoher shows the quay in Yoko- hama with its stone lanterns; the last shows a very low in the water type sailing ship with center smoke stack, flying the Japanese flag. The last page shows a man with a Japanese head on a box, perhaps a magician, next to that is one show- ing two Japanese criminals with large wooden stocks on their necks, the last shows a Japanese carpenter with a hoe-like tool plaining wood. An exciting work, showing a wide variety of Japanese life, and two famous ports and their environs. People who catalogue Japanese photos do not always give credit to both Beato and Stillfried for some photographs, but rather naively cite just one photographer. Due to the nature of the transfer of the Beato business to Stillfried, there is always a question, as to which person took the photo or made a reprint of it. Nevertheless, this collection is early and quite rare ! A large number of these are not found in the reference books, perhaps they were taken prior to the fire and are thus quite early. See ONCE UPON A TIME: VISIONS OF OLD JAPAN: PHOTOGRAPHS BY FELICE BEATO AND BARON RAIMUND VON STILLFRIED for excellent background information. Beato went to Japan in 1863 where he and Charles Wirgman founded the first Egnlish-language Japanese magazine: JAPAN PUNCH, which later became the FAR EAST, enhanced with actual photographs tipped in. Beato was the first foreign person to establish a photographic business in Yokohama.   DOBSON, Sebastian. et al. ART & ARTIFACE: Japanese Photographs of the Meiji Era: Selections From the Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
A LOVELY LOOK AT MEIJI ERA JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHS Boston 2004, MFA. Stiff wrs., as new, 96p., 40 color, 5 b.w. photos, co-author Anne Nishimura Morse & F. Sharf, a sharp, as new copy, 25.5 x 20 cm. FIRST & ONLY EDITION With the influx of Westerners to Japan during the Meiji period [1868-1912] came the rise of the Japanese photo industry. Originally created as souvenirs for foreign travelers, these pictures soon came to act as a prepackaged guide: Before long, the tourist’s first stop in Japan was the photographer’s studio, where he ordered the handsomely-made photo album that would help set his itinerary. But more than this, these photographs reveal an astounding virtuosity, not only in composition but also in the technique of color retouching, which brought these views of daily life, splendid gardens, bustling cityscapes, and theatrical performances to a new level of vividness. Blatantly artificial, these photographs also convey a true and resonant picture of Japanese society at the dawn of the modern age. ART AND ARTIFACE: Japanese Photographs of the Meiji Era provides a brief, elegant introduction to Meiji-era photographs and to the world in which it flourished. In three essays and over 70 illustrations, it explores the social function of these photos and their remarkable artistry, the practicalities of transpacific travel at the turn of the century, and the personal stories of those who collected and preserved these images--leaving us with a privileged glimpse into this pivotal moment in Japanese cultural history and the history of photography. A useful reference for any collector of early Japanese hand-tinted photography.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !!   BROWN, Kendall. et al. ART OF THE JAPANESE POST CARD: The Leonard A Lauder Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERB GUIDE TO THIS SUBJECT IN ENGLISH ! Boston 2004, MFA. Stiff pictorial wrs., 288p., 350 color, 20 b.w. photos, co-authors: L. Lauder & Anne Morse, as new copy 22 x 24 cm. FIRST & ONLY EDITION From the late 19th to the early 20th century, Japan was a vital world center for postcard art. More than just casual mail pieces, these postcards were often designed by promin- ent artists and had a visual impact that belied their modest format. Some were done by famous and known artists from the Ukiyo-e genre [woodblock print artists]. They are remarkably beautiful examples of graphic design. showing the influence of West, Art Nouveau and Euroopean taste. This book shows some 300 full-color examples of these cards, culled from the vast Leonard A. Lauder Collection. They are astonishing not only for their beauty and the quality of their printing, but also for the insight they provide into contemporary Japanese artistic practices--insights not relayed in stand- ard histories that focus on painting & sculpture. The essays are by leading scholars of Japanese prints, art and culture, with a statement by the collector himself, highlight the design, development, and cultural function of these rarely studied, but highly influential and visually exciting, expr- essions of graphic genius. Nicely done, the one and only monograph in English on this subject.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !!   THE EIGHTEEN LOHAN RUBBINGS OF CHINESE BUDDHIST TEMPLES. SUITE OF EIGHTEEN RUBBINGS OF CHINESE BUDDHIST LOHANS.
STUNNING RUBBINS OF THE FAMOUS BUDDHIST LOHANS China n.d. Green brocade silk cloth, accordion folded, tall tall format, 22 x 38.5 cm., illustrating in b.w. the eighte- en Lohan on 6 double-page plates, no text, a pristine, clean & bright copy, mounted Chinese style on hand-made paper.RARE A very lovely album, consisting of superb and very pristine rubbings of Lohans or Buddhist arhats. These saints have been around since the T'ang dynasty [618-905 A.D.]. These stone carvings were likely done in the late Ming period [1368-1644], of stone carvings. The work depicts each of the Eighteen Lohans ["pindola"] or "The old man [men] of the Mountain."], he is attended by an acolyte and a mountain demon. Pindola was also one of the four "Great Disciples" of the Buddha, left on earth to propagate Buddhism after the Buddha's death. All four were to remainin existance to spre- ad the Budhist gospel, and not to experience Nirvana, until Buddha returned to earth in the form of Maitreya. The second rubbing shows two monks seated together, and is of the 17th Louhan ["Pu Tai"] upper right, and the 18th Louhan ["Upasaka Dharmatala"] seated below and to the left. The concept of Louhans came originally to China via Tibet, and earlier dep- ictions include only 16. The 17th & 18th Louhans illustrated in this series of rubbings are later Chinese creations. This is probably a complete set of the Louhans at the time of the stone carving. The first 12 by name are: Ka-no-ka-Fa-tso; Pin-tu-lo-Po-lo-to-she; Su-p'in-t'e; Ka-no-ka-Po-li-tou-she; Po-t'e-lo; No-ku-lo; Fa-she-lo-fuh-to-lo; Ka-li-ka; Pan-t'o- kan; Shu-po-ka; Na-ka-si-na. Lo-hu-lo; Fa-na-p'o-ssu; Yin- kie;t'e; Chu-ch'a [t'a]-Pan-t'o-ka; & A-shih-to. Each sheet has been nicely mounted with ca. 4.5 cm. top and bottom margins, and ca. 5 cm. on the sides. The actual rubbing is 32.5 x 29 cm and is with usual black background with white characters and images, and is center-folded. The last page is blank. No colophon, not text whatsoever. A lovely work, full of charm and innocence. The art work is superbly carved in stone, then a rubbing was made using wet black Sumi-type ink which was then painted on the stone, while the paper was adheared to the wet sone. Then rubs on the back side with dry grass or other soft object. Not an easy task even under the best circumstances, but done with great skill, perfectly copying the stone tablets. By now, its easy to assume that these tablets have already perished or otherwise been disfi- gured or removed from its original site. Useful and excel- lent references exist on these eighteen Lohan: T. Watters: THE EIGHTEEN LOHAN OF CHINESE BUDDHIST TEMPLES. W. Fong: THE LOHANS AND A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN. National Palace Museum: CATA- LOGUE OF THE EXHBITION ON PAINTERS OF LOHANS. C. HARCUM: CHINESE POTTERY STATUE OF LOHAN, et al.   CHIGASAKI ART MUSEUM. TSUCHIYA KOITSU FUKO RAISAN: TSUCHIYA KOITSU: IN PRAISE OF SECENIC BEAUTY-THE MODERN HANGA PRINTS OF TSUCHIYA KOITSU.
A STUNNING CATALOGUE RAISONNE OF KOITSU WOODCUT PRINTS Chigasaki 1999, C.A.M. Pictorial stiff wrs., oblong format, ca 30 x 21 cm., as new, unused, 77p., 134 numbered and color illustrated items + ca 20 other items and color photos, 31p. Japanese text. SCARCE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION Tsuchiya Koitsu [1870-1949] was a superb Shin Hanga artist. There are very litte if any substantial and comprehensive resources on Koitsu. This is the first major monographic work on the artist, and was issued by the museum that houses all of his works. This catalogue raisonne is the most valua- ble single reference on his prints and drawings. Beautifully color illustrated, it gives the collector and student a keen insight to the width and the depth of this mostly unknown artist. On a par with Yoshida Hiroshi his works are strik- ingly similar in that he used elegant tones and hues of blue in a subtle and subdued but marvelous impression of nature and scenery. A good deal of his works are at dusk or sunrise when the light was faint but the outline of images against this back-drop are strong. A master of composition & color, his works are refined, well planned and finely executed by polychrome woodcuts. His works span a long period of high- quality production, even at the end his works maintained a high degree of meticulous attention to detail. This book will give him a well-deserved place in the genre of Shin Hanga. See A. Stephens: THE NEW WAFE: Twentieth-Century Japanese Prints from the Robert O. Muller Collection, p. 110 et al and color print examples for more details on his work.   DONG HO VILLAGE, NORTH VIET-NAM. DONG HO FOLK WOODCUTS: A Small Portfolio Size With Fifteen Hand-Printed Woodcuts. Vietnamese Title: TRANH KHAC GO VIETNAM.
A CHARMING SUITE OF HAND-MADE VIETNAMESE FOLK PRINTS Dong Ho n.d. ca 1970, Vietnam. Suite of 15 color folk prints each about 12 or 13 x 7 or 8 cm., mounted on a stiff card 19 x 14 cm., and contained in a folder with another print on the cover showing Lady Trieu, as new, a nicely executed set. This charming set consists of 15 different woodcuts: The cover and an identical other is that of Lady Trieu; 1:Riding the dragon; 2: Flying a kite from a water buffalo; 3: Wedding of the Rast; 4. Wrestlers; 5: Pig and pigletts; 6: Lady Trieu; 7: Flying a kite from a buffalo's back; 8: A brood of chickens; 9: Toad as rural teacher; 10: Collecting coconuts; 11: Opulence and honours [baby with duck]; 12: Jealousy [woman with scissors]; 13 Boy playing a flute on the buffalo's back; 14: Drum procession; 15: Baby with rooster [honours]. These subjects are common themes and are found in a variety of sizes but with similar subjects. * Each portfolio contains the same prints, but cover prints differ, contents remains identical. * Below are a general comments taken from: Dr. Chu Quang Tru's essay in TRAN CO VIET NAM: ANCIENT & TRADITIONAL PAINTINGS OF VIETNAM [some call them paintings or woodcuts], pp.11-14, and color plates #'s 1-20 which cover some of these exact folk prints [paintings]. His general comments about Dong Ho paintings: "Folk-paintings [woodcuts] are produced throughout the country. Based on artistic styles, printing techniques, and materials used, these are classified into artistic currents bearing the name of the localities producing them. Dong Ho is North of Hanoi, in the delta region. They are done using Poonah paper, which is covered by the artist using a substance extracted from oyster shell which reveals supple parallel lines. The background paper also radiates a silvery light and some show a red hue.... Colors are derived from natural sources: red from liquid extracted from the Sophora Japonica flower; orange and yellow from the Sapppan-wood; white from oyster shell; black from charred bamboo leaves; blue from indigo leaves; and combinations of these colors give hues. These talismans many of which are done in red are used to exorcise evil spirits and preventing inauspicious elements..." The rooster scares away ghosts & devils. * The work is superbly done, and nicely executed with the utmost care and attention to all details, superb example of traditional materials producing a stunning hand-made folk art example. * Historical back bround: They come from the Thuan Thanh district, Ha Bac province, and are the oldest from the XIth century and has the most important role among other groups of folk paintings or woodcuts. Passed from generation to generation for more than 1000 years, these are actually used annually by most Vietnamese during the celebration of Tet, the Lunar New Year. The subjects imply New Year's best wishes and also reflect on the ancient peasant times, the old symbols of wealth and peaceful life: ie pigs, chickens, plump children. Moral attitudes based in Confucianism: a just and decent society, harmony, rejecting bad manners and evil, and appreciating good deeds of national heroes. These are original expressions found in the basic character of the Vietnamese people as a whole. They are the rules of society and a reflection of their gentle nature and national character. * Suitable for framing and display. * Color scans can be sent by email.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !!
