General Washington. This great and good man died at his seat in the Province of Virginia, upon the 15th Day of December 1799, in the 68th year of his age, after an illness of only four and twenty hours. …
London Published by W. S. Blake, 16 Change Alley, Friday June 27 1800, broadside, measuring 20 x 15¾ inches, some spotting and light staining to text, recent archival repairs to several short tears and nicks into edges of sheet, lower right hand corner torn away now repaired with recent paper replacement, with no loss of text, else a very good clean copy. This entirely engraved broadside, carries thirty-one lines of text which are highly laudatory of George Washington, as a man, general and leader of the United States. The text is surmounted by an engraved vignette of a lone rock, with the word Washington chiseled upon it, being battered by waves, in a storm tossed sea, a bolt of lightning flashes in the background, a small tree grows from moss upon the top of the rock. "This illustrious General and Politician was characterized by such rare endowments and such fortunate temperament that every action of his life was equally exempted from vice and from weakness. The powers of his mind and the dispositions of his heart were admirably suited to each other…" A rare broadside, OCLC locates only 1 copy of this broadside in America. This broadside was reprinted in Philadelphia in 1811, in letter press and un-illustrated, a copy of which I sold in my catalog twenty, number 62.
