Lathrop, John Discourse before the Humane Society
Lathrop, John. A discourse before the Humane Society, in Boston, delivered on the second Tuesday of June, 1787. Boston: printed by E. Russell, 1787. 34, xiii pp. 8vo, contemporary pale blue wrappers (dusty, spine worn). First edition. This discourse largely concerns the revival of men and women from near-death experiences, such as drowning, suffocating, fainting, strokes of lightning, strangling, etc.; there are references to the writings of Priestley and Lavoisier, along with a brief sketch of the development of humane societies, beginning with the one organized in Amsterdam in 1767. At the end is an appendix, containing an account of the Massachusetts Humane Society, and "the method of treatment to be used with persons apparently dead from drowning." There is also a list of the Society's members. A very good uncut copy, complete with the half-title. Evans 20450; Sabin 39187n; Austin 1125; K. Garth Huston, Resuscitation, 75.
