Josippon Historiae Judaicae
Josippon. Yosippon [in Hebrew.] Josippon, sive Josephi Ben-Gorionis historiæ Judaicæ libri sex. Oxford: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1706. (6), l, (14), 458, (14) pp. 4to, contemporary mottled calf (slight wear, upper joint cracked). First edition as edited and copiously annotated by the orientalist John Gagnier. A popular chronicle of Jewish history from Adam to the age of Titus, long attributed to an otherwise obscure writer named Josippon, or Joseph ben Gorion (sometimes wrongly identified with Josephus). The text was in fact probably compiled in Hebrew early in the 10th century, by a Jewish native of south Italy. An abbreviated English translation first published in 1558 proved very popular, and was many times reprinted. John Gagnier was born in France, but came to England as a young man and became an Anglican clergyman; he subsequently taught Hebrew at Oxford. The DNB wrongly states that this edition includes the Hebrew text; in fact it is a Latin translation, with personal and place names in the original Hebrew, and an extensive scholarly apparatus. A very good copy, with numerous manuscript annotations by an unidentified early reader (evidently quite learned). Very scarce; the ESTC (1990) lists six copies (L, C, E, O; NBiSU; GOT). Brunet III, 573; Roth, Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica, B14(1).
