Hoyle, Edmond A short treatise on the game of whist
[Hoyle, Edmond.] A short treatise on the game of whist. Containing the laws of the game: and alsosome rules, whereby a beginner may, with due attention to them, attain to the playing it well. Calculations for those who will bet the odds on any point of the score of the game then playing and depending. Cases stated, to shew what may be effected by a very good player in critical parts of the game. References to cases, viz. at the end of the rule you are directed how to find them. Calculations, directing with moral certainty, how to play well any hand or game, by shewing the chances of your partner's having 1, 2, or 3 cards. With variety of cases added in the appendix. Bath printed, and London: reprinted for W. Webster: 1743. 8, (4), 86 pp. 8vo, disbound. The first of many pirated editions; preceded only by a very rare 35-page duodecimo dated 1742 (no prior Bath edition is recorded). Hoyle was a teacher of whist by profession; for many years he circulated his rules for playing in manuscript, and his famous treatise was not published until he was seventy. Later authorized editions bear Hoyle's signature. "Hoyle was the first to write scientifically on whist, or indeed any card game." -- DNB. Two settings of this edition are known; in this one, the fourth line of the drop-head title to Chapter I reads, "The Game of Whist" (as opposed to just "Whist"). A fine copy, complete with the half-title. Rather and Goldwater 2; CBEL II, 1567.
