Bowring, John Poetry of the Magyars
Bowring, John. Poetry of the Magyars, preceded by a sketch of the language and literature of Hungary and Transylvania. London: printed for the author; sold by Robert Heward; Rowland Hunter; and Otto Wigand (Pesth), 1830. xvi, lxxxiii(1), 312, (4) pp. 8vo, original light green cloth, printed paper label (spine faded, traces of rubbing). First edition. One of the most interesting and ambitious of Bowring's anthologies of poetry in translation; preceded by collections of poems from Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Servian, and Polish, and followed by a "Cheskian" anthology (i.e. Bohemian). With a list of more than 300 subscribers, including Bernard Barton, Jeremy Bentham (Bowring's friend), John Cam Hobhouse, John Gibson Lockhart, Walter Scott, and a fair number of Hungarian aristocrats. The inclusion of a Budapest bookseller in the imprint is unusual. A fine copy in the original publisher's cloth binding, complete with two leaves of errata at the end. Jackson, p. 556; Wolff 616; CBEL III, 369.
