First London edition; also published in New York the same year. An American novel of melodrama and romance, set in Florence, of which the author had first-hand experience; the dedication to the Viscondessa de Sto. Amaro is dated "Florence, Italy, May, 1879." At least seven of Frank Lee Benedict's novels were published in London as three-deckers; Wolff's conjecture that the author was a woman appears to be unfounded.
