Lyell, Charles Travels in North America; with Geological Observations on the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia.
London, John Murray, 1845. first edition, two volumes, 12mo, [xvi], [1] - 316; viii, [1] - 272, [16] pp., folding map, six plates, original cloth, re-backed, original spines laid down, spine ends slightly frayed, some spotting to covers, folding map backed with linen, former owner's bookplates, else a very good, clean set. The eminent English geologist, Charles Lyell, traveled to America in 1841 in order to pursue his geological investigations and give lectures. His travels took him through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, the Midwest, especially Ohio, and Nova Scotia. Lyell's descriptions of America are unusual among works by British travelers for their fairness and insight. "Lyell's powers of close, accurate observation, coupled with his judicious temper, render his works on America among the best of his generation." - Clark. "Interesting, valuable and scientific." -Sabin. Clark, Old South, III:199; Howes L-575; Sabin 42761
