The image is signed: "The Doctor / Canton / April, 1854 / Kern delt." Overall condition is excellent. A fine original watercolor drawing by the important American artist, Edward M. Kern. This drawing depicts three standing figures at Canton, including a doctor and a young boy. The men stand in a Canton street next to a child's hobby-horse toy on wheels. The drawing was made while Kern served as artist and taxidermist on the North Pacific exploring expedition under Cadwalader Ringgold in 1853-56. This expedition, which was primarily a surveying and exploring voyage, set sail in June of 1853 for the Orient via the Cape of Good Hope and Batavia. While at Canton, Ringgold suffered a mental collapse and was replaced with Commander John Rodgers. The ships returned, via San Francisco and Cape Horn, to the New York Navy yard in the summer of 1856.
