St. John's Gospel in the Muskoki or Creek Indian language. The earliest book of the Bible printed in Muskoki was this edition of St. John's Gospel, with a few verses from the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark. Translated by John Davis, a Creek interpreter, and Johnston Lykins, both members of the Baptist Church. Rare imprint by Jotham Meeker, printed at his Baptist Mission press at Shawanoe, in present day Kansas. McMurtrie, Douglas C., and Allen, Albert H., Jotham Meeker Pioneer Printer of Kansas… (Chicago: 1930), 36. McMurtrie, provides this translation which is written on the NYPL copy: "This| Word Good| John |wrote| and |That Word |John Davis, Jonathan [sic] Lyken| Together Muskoke Language| wrote in." "By John Davis and Johnston Lykins. 1,000 copies, 6 forms, "making a book of 192 pages." Bound by Meeker. Meeker Journal, August 12 and 22, 1835. " Pilling, Muskhogean Languages, p. 28. McMurtrie cites only the NYPL copy, which he describes as having only 190 pages, OCLC indicates that this copy is now available on "microfilm." The only other copy located on OCLC is the copy held by the Bible Society, also of 190 pages, thus it would appear that the present copy is the only known complete copy. Darlow & Moule, 6903.
