Maclure commanded the Investigator, which accompanied the Enterprise, under Commander Collinson, in this Arctic expedition sent to rescue Sir John Franklin and his companions who had sailed from England in 1845. Maclure and his crew shared a prize of ten thousand pounds for discovering the North-West passage, however, when in 1859 the remains of Franklin's expedition were found it was recognized that Franklin actually discovered the passage in 1846.
