[Gallatin, Albert] Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, on the Subject of Public Roads and Canals; Made in Pursuance of a Resolution of Senate, of March 2, 1807. April 12, 1808. Printed by Order of the Senate.
Washington, Printed by R. C. Weightman, 1808. first edition, octavo, 123 page pamphlet, removed from bound volume, lacking wrappers, text spotted and browned, bottom corner of last leaf clipped, not affecting text, else a good copy. Gallatin's report, prepared while he was Jefferson's Secretary of the Treasury, is considered to be the starting point of a consistent system of government-backed internal improvements to navigation, travel and internal commerce in the United States. The federal government first involved itself in these matters with the funding of the National Road in 1802, this report outlines the works and projects then underway and suggests what works were most needed. Gallatin's report focuses on roads and canals, in addition there are two printed letters in the report, one, from Robert Fulton, on canals, and the other by Benjamin Latrobe deals with railroads. The latter work, is the first printed work to advocate the construction of railroads in the United States. This is the first edition of this seminal work on early American industry and commerce, there was an additional printing in 1808 in Philadelphia and an 1816 reprint. American Imprints 16589; Howes G-27; this edition not in Rink, Technical Americana, who notes only the 1816 edition, 4033; Sabin 26399, note.
