London, Printed by Strahan and Spottiswoode, for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown,1819. third edition, octavo, xv, 454 pp., original boards, portions of paper spine label, some loss to spine, else a very good clean copy. "An unflattering picture of the western frontier." - Howes. Fearon came to America on a tour of inspection in the interest of some English farmers who contemplated settling in Illinois. His narrative is interesting, and as he observes with especial care everything of importance to intending settlers, it is especially instructive to the student of social and economic history. The price and quality of land, the conditions of trade, competition between English and domestic goods, the cost and conditions of travel by sea and overland, types of settlers, slavery and the south, and phases of public opinion are the features of the United States to which Fearon devoted most of his attention. For a knowledge of the years just following the War of 1812 Fearon's book is an important source. Howes F-65, Sabin 23956, see Buck 98, Clark II 22, Graff 1301, Hubach p. 49, Thomson 406
