The expedition was organized and financed by Edward Harriman and included Curtis and another photographer, artists and scientists. They set sail in May 1899 on the ship the George W. Elder. They sailed 9000 miles, visiting The Pribilof Islands, the Islands of Hall, St. Matthew and St. Lawrence, Prince William Sound and many Eskimo settlements on the Asiatic and American coasts.
