New York: E.B. Clayton, 1830. First edition. 12mo, Unbound as issued, uncut. 54p. Lacking final blank; last few leaves chipped at margins. Notes: "written for the Bowery theatre, New York by William Dunlap." Dunlap, William, 1766 - 1839. Dunlap was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In 1777 he moved to New York where he studied painting. He later continued this pursuit under the tutelage of Benjamin West in London for three years, beginning in 1784. While in London he became interested in theatre. When he returned to America he began down the road that would lead to his being dubbed "The Father of the American Stage" by writing his first play, The Modest Soldier; or, love in New York, which was never played. In 1796, he opened the Park Theatre with his partner John Hodgkinson. In 1805, the theatre went bankrupt, and he bowed out of the business until a year later when he became the assistant to theatre's new owner. Many of the plays he wrote were adaptations from French and German plays, which he also often censored due to his puritanical sense of morality. He wrote History of the American Theatre, as well as around 66 plays. Included in this collection as original editions are: Ribbemony, or The Feudal Baron, The Wife of Two Husbands, The Glory of Colombia her Yeomanry!, Peter the Great; or, The Russian Mother, The Good Neighbor, and Fraternal Discord.
