Oblong portfolio, measuring 15 by 10 1/2 inches, bound in velvet with metallic decorations and inset color illustration. $3400. An exceptionally rare portfolio illustrating the "pearls" of Paul de Wit's famous collection of musical instruments, with 16 magnificent chromolithographic color plates. Handsomely bound in red velvet with ornate silver decorations and an inset color illustration of four musicians. In 1880 Dutch viol player Paul de Wit started publishing his Zeitschrift für Instrumentenbau, "in which early instruments were discussed in great detail; it continued publication until World War II. In 1886 he opened to the public, in the Thomaskirchhof, his superb collection of early instruments, among them three viole pompose (including one 'from Bach's orchestra') and a magnificent gamba by 'Vincenzo Ruger detto il per,' dated 1702 and with a modeled back" (New Grove 20:464). Title page in German, English, and French. Tissue-guarded plates in fine condition. A stunning collection of musical instruments, beautifully illustrated in color. Rare.
