Two early illustrated editions of this interesting account for children of the life of Patoo, each illustrated with numerous woodcuts. Born in 1804 on one of the Marquesas Islands, Patoo jumped aboard an American ship at the age of fourteen and eventually made his way to Boston. He was converted to Christianity and joined the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall, Connecticut, where he died at the age of nineteen of a protracted illness. Light foxing in both copies; the dated copy has split at the spine of the wrappers and been resewn at a later date. Very good condition.
