"ADAMS, HENRY" The Education of Henry Adams.
"Washington: [Privately printed], 1907." "First edition, privately printed, one of probably no morethan 100 copies, the exact number is not known" "BAL 32, which suggests that 40 copies were initially printed, with more copies printed later due to demand." "Large 4to, original blue cloth, recent reddish-brown morocco label, gilt lettering." "
One of the most famous American autobiographies, printed by Adams at his own expense and carefully distributed amongst family, friends and fellow historians, under the guise of inviting their criticism of his ideas. It was also a canny attempt to attract their attention. Adams similarly issued two previous works: Memoirs of Marau Taaroa, Last Queen of Tahiti (1893) and Mont Saint Michel and Chartres (1904). It was not for ten years that The Education was published in a trade edition, by Houghton-Mifflin (1917), and two years later it won the Pulitzer Prize. One hundred years after its first publication in this limited edition, The Education of Henry Adams is still celebrated as one of the finest American books of the 20th century." "The spine label has been carefully restored; edges slightly worn; fine copy, enclosed in a custom clamshell box."
