Cowell, Roberta ROBERTA COWELL'S STORY BY HERSELF with a preface by Canon Millbourne
Heinemann London 1954 1st a very good copy in a very good dust jacket Robert Cowell was from an illustrious British family (his father received the Order of Commander, Legion of Merit from Gen. Eisenhower in North Africa). The author was an R.A.F. pilot who flew Spitfires against the Germans. After World War II, he became a British race car driver. But the dilemma he faced was that he felt himself as a woman inspite of having male organs. The remainder of the book tells of how he chose to have the operation to reverse this and has many photographs of the author as Roberta Cowell. Canon Millbourne of the Bristol Cat hedral writes a foreward where he talks about this as new territory with both social and theological significance. Clearly he is in sympathy with the author's decision but somewhat uncomfortable.
