A pairing of two Civil War stories from Bierce's classic collection "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians" (1891). Bierce (1842-1914?) enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and, despite suffering a severe head wound at the Kenesaw Mountain in June 1864, served as a topographical officer until 1865. He would later transform his Civil War experiences into a number of powerful short stories. Volume four in Paul Elder's Western Classics series, designed by John Henry Nash. Inscribed by Bierce on a prefatory blank leaf. Vellum spine over blue paper-covered boards, with gilt stamping on the spine and front. In the uncommon jacket, with some mild darkening along the spine, and minor chipping to the top edge; otherwise a bright and crisp, exceptionally fresh copy.
