FLAUBERT, Gustave. LA TENTATION DE SAINT ANTOINE.
Paris: Charpentier, 1874. 8vo, (5), 206pp. Recent half vellum lettered in gilt, gilt top, orig. wrappers bound in, very good.
First Edition. This work is regarded by critics as perhaps Flaubert’s most enduring achievement, a prose poem “remarkable for its beauty of style and language and its imaginative power.” Mallarmé called it “un idéal mêlant époques et races dans une prodigieuse fête, comme l’éclair de l’Orient expiré.” Flaubert had completed an early version by 1849 but did not return to it again until much later, finishing it in 1872. Talvart & Place 5A.
