Wheatley, Phillis Hymn to Humanity. Broadside
Decatur: Wisteria Press (1998). 1st ed. 1998, 1st Edition No Jacket No Binding Signed by Author(s) As New 15" x 10" Broadside. Wheatley (c. 1753-1784) was the first African American to publish a book written in the American colonies on any subject. Emory University recently acquired an unpublished version of this poem which appeared in her book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (Sept. 1773). The manuscript, dated December 12, 1773, offers significant textual variations and identifies, for the first time, the previously unknown "S. P. G. " to whom the poem is dedicated. Designed and printed by Dwight Agner, there were 300 numbered and 26 lettered copies, as well as 20 Roman numeraled publisher's copies, letterpress printed in three colors. There is a portrait of Phillis Wheatley adapted from the frontispiece of Poems on Various Subjects. Only the 20 Roman numeraled copies (printed on mouldmade Zerkall) are for sale; the others are being given as gifts to contributors to Emory's Library. Fine.
