Based upon Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852), this ballet was commissioned by Lincoln Kirsten for the American Ballet Theatre, but never performed. It was rejected by the company's artistic director, George Balanchine, who was reportedly baffled by the libretto's "verbal emphasis."
