A beautiful example in fine condition of a French jansenist binding. Louis Barthou (1862-1934), ìPrime Minister of France 1913. An adept moderate right-wing member of the Chamber of Deputies since 1889, he held a large number of ministerial appointments before and after World War I. Hostile to Germany and suspicious of Briand's policies, he had the opportunity to realize some of his demands for a tougher stance towards Germany as president of the Reparations Committee 1922ñ6. As a result of this vigilant stance, he led French hostility towards the aggressive Nazi regime in Germany in 1933 and 1934. He prepared an anti-Fascist alliance with the Soviet Union, which was concluded by Laval in 1935 after his death. His assassination during a state visit of the Yugoslav king, Alexander I, deprived France of its last major politician ready to stand up to Hitler; thereafter, its politicians such as Blum preferred to follow British policies of appeasement towards Germanyî (A Dictionary of Contemporary World History). ìBarthou enjoyed a certain reputation as a man of letters and authored a number of books on historical and literary topics, among them Mirabeau (1913), Lamartine orateur (1918), Danton (1932), and Victor Hugo (1935). He was elected to the Académie française in 1918î (J.M. Rife, Jr. in Historical Dictionary of the Third French Republic, 1870-1940 (Westport, CT: 1986), I, pp. 80-81). His biography of Richard Wagner La Vie amoureuse de Richard Wagner (Paris: 1925) was translated into English by Henry Irving Brock as The Prodigious Lover: New Aspects in the Life of Richard Wagner (New York: 1927). 1925
