Vielé, Mrs. Following the Drum
NY: Rudd & Carleton, MDCCCLVIII (1858). 1st edition. 256pp, [x - advts]. Original stamped boards, somewhat worn, spine faded, binding sound, and internally relatively free of foxing. There is a minor genre of women’s accounts of frontier army life, the best known being those of Elizabeth Custer although this is undoubtedly one of the earliest examples. Mrs. Vielé describes her year’s stay at Ringold Barracks in Texas where her husband was stationed. Wagner-Camp-Becker describes it as “…an entertaining commentary on life in the Texas Frontier in the early 1850’s” WCB 312a:1, Howes V92.
